It also argues for a 'cybernetic' reading of Lacan's theory of language, which he outlined in his second Seminar; and for a reappraisal of Freud's concept of Nachträglichkeit as a way to facilitate a better understanding of the retroactive nature of trauma and its relation to language and the drive.

Abstract. - In this work we develop a theory of motives for logarithmic schemes over

fields in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato. Our construction is based on the notion of finite log correspondences, the dividing Nisnevich topology on log schemes, and
the basic idea of parameterizing homotopies by □, i.e., the projective line with respect
to its compactifying logarithmic structure at infinity. We show that Hodge cohomology
of log schemes is a □-invariant theory that is representable in the category of logarithmic motives. Our category is closely related to Voevodsky's category of motives
and A1-invariant theories: assuming resolution of singularities, we identify the latter
with the full subcategory comprised of A1-local objects in the category of logarithmic
motives. Fundamental properties such as □-homotopy invariance, Mayer-Vietoris for
coverings, the analogs of the Gysin sequence and the Thom space isomorphism as well
as a blow-up formula and a projective bundle formula witness the robustness of the
setup

Types and the Structure of Meaning: Issues in Compositional and Lexical Semantics

Addresses the role of structure in semantic analysis from the perspective of theories of meaning using rich theories of types. Also relates the theory of frames to these type theories as introducing, to some extent, similar structure into semantic analysis. The authors show how a structured approach is necessary to appropriately analyse phenomena in areas as diverse as lexical semantics and the semantics of attitudinal constructions referring to psychological states. In particular, these are: polysemy taken together with copredication, and attitudes such as belief and knowledge. The authors argue that the very same structure required to define a rich system of types enables them to adequately analyse both of these phenomena, thus revealing similarities in two otherwise apparently unrelated topics in semantics. They also argue that such theories facilitate a semantic theory oriented towards a psychological and contextually situated view of meaning. What an excellent book. Full to the brim with rare photographs, detailing the distinguished lineage of the "Tiffys" and Tempest from Hurricane through to Tornado, Typhoon, Tempest and then on to the Fury and Sea Fury. All this and Roland Beamont as co-author - how can you go wrong? The book, as the inside jacket notes states, attempts to correct a slight injustice paid, to the Typhoons especially, due to the well recorded exploits of the Hurricanes and Spitfires during World War II which led to the latter being side-lined as an "inferior type" especially early on when test pilots who flew the early Typhoons never knew if they would make it back or suffer a mid-air catastrophic and usually fatal loss of the whole of the rear end of the aeroplane. As the book title suggests , the main emphasis is on the "Typhoon and the Tempest at War" - the Typhoon section includes an excellent multi-view drawing of the Typhoon Mk I B by G.R.Duval and the Tempest section "Enter the Tempest" has a cut away of the Tempest II, Typhoon and Tempest V.
