Wisdom and Management in the Knowledge Economy

55505943209e63e7a3a340e01445b601.webp

Wisdom and Management in the Knowledge Economy By David Rooney; Bernard McKenna; Peter Liesch
2010 | 275 Pages | ISBN: 0415445736 | EPUB | 1 MB
Today there are more technology, technologists, knowledge and experts than at any time in human history; but from a global perspective, it is difficult to argue that this accumulation of knowledge and technology has put the world in an unambiguously better position than it was in the past. Business is not getting any easier to do and major corporate collapses based on poor decisions, poor conduct, and poor judgement continue to occur. In public administration too, basic institutions and services (education, health, transport) seem to be continually undergoing "crises" of inadequate delivery and excessive pressure. Wisdom and Management in the Knowledge Economy explains why unwise managerial practice can happen in a world characterized by an excess of information and knowledge. Drawing on Aristotle's idea of practical wisdom, the book develops a theory of social practice wisdom that addresses important social psychological and sociological dynamics that underpin wise management and organizations. As well as providing a detailed theory of social practice wisdom, this book considers practical issues in organizational communication, behavior, culture, change and knowledge as well as in HRM, leadership, ethics, strategy, international business, business education, and wisdom research. By introducing the notion of social practice wisdom, aspects of social structure, organizational culture, and organizational communication needed for wisdom to flourish are for the first time rendered visible in a way that opens new possibilities for wiser management, wiser organizations, and wisdom research.

Wise Women Myths and Stories for Midlife and Beyond

8256d5c0a62dfb034e161a0473cd9903.webp

Wise Women: Myths and Stories for Midlife and Beyond by Sharon Blackie, Angharad Wynne
English | October 8, 2024 | ISBN: 1608689662 | 336 pages | PDF | 3.20 Mb
Unparalleled inspiration from fierce grandmothers, misunderstood witches, glamorous fairy godmothers, and hairy-chinned hags

From early childhood, we learn about the world and its possibilities through myths and fairy tales. The heroines, though, tend to be young princesses or fair maidens, and the evildoers older women: wicked witches or unforgiving matriarchs. Yet a wealth of lesser-known European stories feature mature wise women with personality and power. Compiling many years of research, Sharon Blackie has reclaimed these tales, presenting them in evocative prose that will resonate with women of all ages.
This dazzling array of not-to-be-messed-with older characters provides compelling role models for today's readers, who seek to redefine their relationship with aging. These women outwit monsters, test and mentor younger heroines, embody the cycles of the Earth, weave the world into being - and almost always have the last laugh. Each story is accompanied by background commentary that highlights important themes and reveals its insights into how we might live meaningfully and authentically in the second half of life.

Biden, the mob has done presidential dirty work, including attempts to assassinate foreign leaders, harass America's enemies, and put our chief executives in office.
Wiseguys and the White House documents when mobsters and presidents have traded favors-and double-crossed each other, including:The deal cut with Lucky Luciano to protect the waterfront during World War II.How the Chicago Outfit (and Frank Sinatra) got one Kennedy elected, only to be pursued by another. How LBJ and the FBI used a mob hitman to hunt down the killers of Civil Rights activists in MississippiReagan's association with Lew Wasserman, the powerful and influential Hollywood mogulTrump's blatant ties to construction and gambling cartelsBiden's early links to "the Irishman" Frank Sheeran, the labor union official and enforcer for Jimmy Hoffa and Russell Bufalino. And moreCombining exhaustive research, including newly released government records and the private recollections of leading gangsters, Wiseguys and the White House offers insight into the myths about the power in America and the drive for recognition and respectability that unites consiglieri and commanders-in-chief alike.

Wittenberg Meets the World Reimagining the Reformation at the Margins

Wittenberg Meets the World : Reimagining the Reformation at the Margins By Alberto L. Garcia; John A. Nunes
2017 | 135 Pages | ISBN: 0802873286 | EPUB | 1 MB
Proposes creative implications of the 500-year Reformation tradition for today As the global church assesses the legacy of the Lutheran Reformation, Alberto García and John Nunes in this book reimagine central Reformational themes from black, Hispanic, and other perspectives traditionally at the margins of catholic-evangelical communities. Focusing on the central theme of justification, García and Nunes delve into three interlinked aspects of the church's life in the world-martyria (witness), diakonia (service), and koinōnia (fellowship). They argue that it is critically important and vitally enriching for the whole church, especially Eurocentric Protestant churches, to learn from the grassroots theological emphases of Christian communities in the emerging world.

Wittgenstein and Early Analytic Semantics Toward a Phenomenology of Truth

e042a97625a241aabe47ddc539d28596.webp

Wittgenstein and Early Analytic Semantics : Toward a Phenomenology of Truth By James Connelly
2015 | 283 Pages | ISBN: 0739199544 | EPUB | 1 MB
This book assesses the respective prospects of two competing methodological approaches to the study of meaning and communication, as well truth and inference, each figuring prominently within the analytic tradition of philosophy of language. The first, 'logistical' approach is characterized by the employment of de-compositional logical analysis designed to resolve various theoretically problematic semantic and logical puzzles. The representative proponents of this approach are the three great early analytic philosophers (Frege, Russell, and the early Wittgenstein). The second, 'phenomenological' approach, by contrast, instead advocates careful inspection and detailed description of our actual linguistic practices, along with general features of the ordinary circumstances, and lived experiences, in which they are situated. The aim of such description is then to dissolve the aforementioned puzzles by showing them to derive from key misunderstandings of these practices and circumstances. The principle proponent here is the later Wittgenstein. Expanding upon the work of the later Wittgenstein, this book argues that considerations regarding the nature of following a rule, and deriving from the impossibility of private languages, decisively recommend the phenomenological over the logistical methodology, in particular because these considerations demand that we identify linguistic meanings with the disciplined uses of words within public, and proto-typically social, linguistic practices.

Women and Capitalism in the Croatian Hinterland The Practice of Labor and Consump...

Women and Capitalism in the Croatian Hinterland : The Practice of Labor and Consumption By Nila Ginger Hofman
2014 | 175 Pages | ISBN: 0739187368 | EPUB | 1 MB
In Women and Capitalism in the Croatian Hinterland: The Practice of Labor and Consumption, Nila Ginger Hofman examines the effects of post-socialist capitalism on the lives of Croatian women. Croatia's secession from socialism and a more recent gestating capitalist landscape provide the contexts in which the author examines how women navigate the labor and consumer markets. The women consulted for this book experienced two decades of developing free-market capitalism. They also experienced the disintegration of the self-managing socialism that existed in Yugoslavia from 1948 to 1991; four years of the Balkan War, which brought emotional and infrastructural tolls; and the emergence of the new Croatian Republic in 1991. The transition to capitalism in the last part of the twentieth century brought anticipation, angst, and excitement. The new millennium has also been plagued by unemployment rates hovering around 20 percent as well as the emergence of western-style shopping malls. Women and Capitalism in the Croatian Hinterland details the cumulative effects of these changes, which resulted in an unprecedented upheaval in the lives of Croatians.

Work in a Modern Society : The German Historical Experience in Comparative Perspective By Jürgen Kocka; Jürgen Kocka
2010 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 1845455754 | EPUB | 1 MB
Whereas the history of workers and labor movements has been widely researched, the history of work has been rather neglected by comparison. This volume offers original contributions that deal with cultural, social and theoretical aspects of the history of work in modern Europe, including the relations between gender and work, working and soldiering, work and trust, constructions and practices. The volume focuses on Germany but also places the case studies in a broader European context. It thus offers an insight into social and cultural history as practiced by German-speaking scholars today but also introduces the reader to ongoing research in this field.

Work-Integrated Learning in the 21st Century Global Perspectives on the Future

44bef10c4f0f3da8b881acec91a48489.webp

Work-Integrated Learning in the 21st Century : Global Perspectives on the Future By Tracey Bowen; Maureen Drysdale
2017 | 243 Pages | ISBN: 1787148602 | EPUB | 1 MB
Work-Integrated Learning in the 21st century: Global perspectives on the future, explores new questions about the state of work for new university and college graduates in the context of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). As these 'Millennials' graduate, they are entering a precarious labour market that is filled with ambiguity and uncertainty, creating a great deal of anxiety for those trying to develop skills for highly competitive jobs or jobs that do not yet exist. In their pursuit of skill acquisition, many are participating in WIL programs (e.g., cooperative education, internships) which allow them to gain practical experience while pursuing their education. With a focus on WIL, this book examines issues involved in developing work ready graduates. Topics include mental health and well-being - an urgent matter on many campuses; remote working - an aspect of the information and social media age that is becoming more prevalent as the precarity of work increases; issues of diversity and discrimination; ethics and professionalism; global citizenship and competency; and the role that higher education institutions need to play to prepare students for the challenges of economic shifts. These topics are timely and relevant to the situations faced by new graduates and those who prepare them for the world beyond school. The chapters provide a close examination of the issues from a global perspective, particularly as experiential education and work-integrated learning programs are becoming more prevalent in higher education and viewed as essential for preparing millennials for the 21st century competitive labour market.

Worker Identity, Agency and Economic Development Women's Empowerment in the India...

78374e4ffcb27bd6ecff9a5a6c8b51b6.webp

Worker Identity, Agency and Economic Development : Women's Empowerment in the Indian Informal Economy By Elizabeth Hill
2010 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 0415566096 | EPUB | 1 MB
More than nine out of every ten working women in India are employed in the informal economy, unprotected by labour laws and excluded from basic forms of social security. They work as daily labourers in the fields, small producers and industrial outworkers in their own homes and as vendors on the streets. These workers typically receive very low wages and experience extreme forms of social, economic and political marginalisation. This book examines what types of interventions can improve the well-being of women working in the Indian informal economy. Using the case study of the Self Employed Women's Association, Worker Identity, Agency and Economic Development argues that work-life reform for informal women workers has moral and social dimensions, as well as economic. Drawing on the work of social philosopher Axel Honneth, the book argues that worker agency is critical to the process of work-life reform in the informal economy. Using empirical data collected amongst SEWA members the study shows that there is a positive and developmental relationship between a worker's identity, or psychological integrity, and her actual capacity to engage in the political economy for constructive change. The study shows that membership based organisations can promote the social foundations of recognition and respect that are critical to identity and agency, as well as provide worker's with real opportunities to develop alternative non-exploitative economic institutions that deliver improved wages and social security. But in organizing informal workers for collective action the existing distribution of power and wealth, as well as gender privilege are challenged. The result is social conflict and sometimes violence. Conflict of this nature is endemic to the development process, but is often overlooked in development literature and policy design. The book will be of interest to development scholars and practitioners, as well as those interested in the dynamics of women's empowerment and socio-economic change for informal economy workers.

Working Out of Poverty Job Creation and the Quality of Growth in Africa

Working Out of Poverty : Job Creation and the Quality of Growth in Africa By Louise M. Fox; Louise Fox
2008 | 96 Pages | ISBN: 0821374427 | PDF | 1 MB
Governments in Africa and their stakeholders have been disappointed with the number of wage and salary jobs that have been created over the last decade or more. Even in countries that experienced both strong economic growth and rapid poverty reduction during this period, job creation has lagged behind expectations. Faced with a rapidly growing labor force, Africa has to find new ways to create better paying jobs. Working Out of Poverty reviews the literature and presents original research by the authors analyzing job creation in Sub-Saharan Africa in light of economic performance over the decade and more since 1995. The book identifies factors that impact job creation, both inside the labor market (such as labor supply and demand) and outside of it (overall investment climate.)Working Out of Poverty focuses on the following key questions: How has the structure of economic growth and labor demand shaped the job creation process? What policies have been pursued to raise the quality of the African labor force? What does the expanding “informal” sector mean for the labor market and the quality of growth? Is it a route out of poverty or a low-skills trap?

Writing Widowhood The Landscapes of Bereavement

Writing Widowhood : The Landscapes of Bereavement By Jeffrey Berman
2015 | 246 Pages | ISBN: 1438458193 | EPUB | 1 MB
The death of a beloved spouse after a lifetime of companionship is a life-changing experience. To help understand the reality of bereavement, Jeffrey Berman focuses on five extraordinary American writers--Joan Didion, Sandra Gilbert, Gail Godwin, Kay Redfield Jamison, and Joyce Carol Oates--each of whom has written a memoir of spousal loss. In each chapter, Berman gives an overview of the writer's life and art before widowhood, including her early preoccupation with death, and then discusses the writer's memoir and her life as a widow. He discovers that writing was, for all of these authors, both a solace and a lifeline, enabling them to maintain bonds with their lost loved ones while simultaneously moving on with their lives. These memoirs of widowhood, Berman maintains, reveal not only courage and resilience in the face of loss, but also the critical role of writing and reading in bereavement and recovery.

Understanding Academic Freedom, 2nd Edition

5ebebfb4758489deee1f647f26152110.webp

Understanding Academic Freedom (Higher Ed Leadership Essentials), 2nd Edition by Henry Reichman
English | March 25, 2025 | ISBN: 1421450941, 9781421450957 | True EPUB | 320 pages | 0.6 MB
In the evolving landscape of academic freedom in America, this second edition addresses the latest challenges and developments in the field.

Since the publication of the first edition of Understanding Academic Freedom, the never-ending struggle to defend academic freedom has entered a demonstrably new phase. Legislation determining what can and cannot be taught in schools in Florida, Texas, and other states has intensified governing board activism that impinges on widely accepted faculty prerogatives. Major donors in research, teaching, and institutional governance have grown bold in their interference. Highly polarizing controversies over antisemitism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as debates over diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, continue to broil.
Taken as a whole, these developments indicate that we have entered a new period in the history of American academic freedom. Academic freedom, long heralded as a core value of American higher education, may now be in as much danger as at any time since the 1950s. But what is academic freedom? Is it the right of faculty members to teach whatever they wish; a value upheld for supporters, but not opponents, amid polarizing controversy; or a narrow claim of privilege by a professorial elite, immune from public accountability? Henry Reichman, who chaired the American Association of University Professors' Committee A on Academic Freedom and Tenure for nearly a decade, mounts a rigorous defense of academic freedom and its principal means of protection: the system of academic tenure.
Probing academic freedom's role in multiple contexts, Reichman draws on a wealth of historical and contemporary examples to offer a comprehensive introduction to the concept in all its manifestations. This second edition addresses the most recent and pressing issues in academic freedom, making it an indispensable resource for understanding the current controversial climate.

Understanding Franz Kafka (True EPUB)

Understanding Franz Kafka (Understanding Modern European and Latin American Literature) by Allen Thiher
English | January 15, 2018 | ISBN: 1611178282, 9781611178296 | True EPUB | 304 pages | 0.7 MB
A chronological analysis of the various phases of this eccentric writer's short life and his quest for meaning

Franz Kafka is without question one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century despite the fact that much of his work remained unpublished when he died at a relatively young age in 1924. Kafka's eccentric methods of composition and his diffident attitude toward publishing left most of his writing to be edited and published after his death by his literary executor, Max Brod.
In Understanding Franz Kafka, Allen Thiher addresses the development of Kafka's work by analyzing it in terms of its chronological unfolding, emphasizing the various phases in Kafka's life that can be discerned in his constant quest to find a meaning for his writing. Thiher also shows that Kafka's work, frequently self-referential, explores the ways literature can have meaning in a world in which writing is a dubious activity.
After outlining Kafka's life using new biographical information, Thiher examines Kafka's first attempts at writing, often involving nearly farcical experiments. The study then shows how Kafka's work developed through twists and turns, beginning with the breakthrough stories "The Judgment" and "The Metamorphosis," continuing with his first attempt at a novel with Amerika, and followed by Kafka's shifting back and forth between short fiction and two other unpublished novels, The Trial and The Castle.
Thiher also calls on Kafka's notebooks and diaries. These help demonstrate that Kafka never stopped experimenting in his attempt to find a literary form that might satisfy his desire to create some kind of transcendental literary text in an era in which the transcendent is at best an object of nostalgia or of comic derision. In short, Thiher contends, Kafka constantly sought the grounds for writing in a world in which all appears groundless.

Universality in Islamic Thought Rationalism, Science and Religious Belief

Professor Michael G. Morony, "Universality in Islamic Thought: Rationalism, Science and Religious Belief "
English | ISBN: 1780769431 | 2014 | 280 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In tenth-century Baghdad, the Mu'tazila theologians believed good and evil could be distinguished through human reason, while in the Indian subcontinent in the sixteenth century, rationalism served to express both the connections and boundaries of Islam in a sphere of religious pluralism. Universality in Islamic Thought discusses specific applications of rationalism in Islamic thought - from the Mu'tazila of Iraq and the Hanafi school of Islamic Law to the Chishti mystics of Mughal India - to explore the boundaries, morality and utility of the universalist principle as conceived by Islamic scientists, scholars, theologians and mystics across half a millennium. Providing a long-overdue and groundbreaking study of rationalism in Islam, this is the first methodological examination of how rationalism served - or did not serve - as a bridge between Muslims and non-Muslims during one of the most vital periods of Islamic intellectual activity. Bringing together contributions from leading academics such as Wilferd Madelung and Carl W Ernst, this is essential reading for scholars and students of intellectual history and Islamic studies.
