This volume offers a new perspective on the syntax of nominal expressions in various European languages, arguing that articles do not directly and biunivocally realise semantic definiteness. The first two chapters provide an accessible introduction to recent developments in generative syntax, namely the cartographic and minimalist approaches, by focusing on the "imperfect" parallels between clauses and nominal expressions. The third chapter shows that feature sharing is not the result of a unique syntactic process, but, rather, the consequence of Merge, which creates syntactic structure instantiating two types of relation: Selection and Modification. It argues for three different ways of transferring features: Agreement allows for an argument (an independent phase, selected by a head) to re-enter the computation as part of the predicate of the new phase. It targets Person features and is not involved in the feature sharing triggered by modification. Concord copies the features of N (notably gender, number and case, where this is present). It is the result of Modification and can coexist with Agreement. Finally, Projection is triggered by multiple internal mergers of the head, bundled with all its interpretable and uninterpretable features, which may be realized in different segments. The fourth chapter focuses on the nature of determiners such as articles, demonstratives, quantifiers, possessive adjectives and pronouns, personal pronouns and proper names, and shows that only articles have the properties to be attributed to "functional heads" because they are a segment of a scattered nominal head. The rest of the volume is devoted to the analysis of syntactic phenomena, such as double definiteness, expletive articles, and weak and strong adjectival inflection, by means of the proposal that (scattered) nominal or adjectival heads concord with their modifiers. This approach reinterprets head movement in a fashion that makes it compatible with minimalist requirements, provides an explanation for the apparent optionality of head movement, eliminates the typology of head movements by adjunction or substitution, and gives an original answer to the doubts raised about the legitimacy of the very notion of "functional category".

Continuing large-scale migration to the United States raises the question of how best to integrate new immigrants into the American national community. Traditionally, one successful answer has been to encourage immigrants to learn our language, culture, history, and civic traditions. New immigrants would then be invited become citizens and welcomed as full members of the community. However, a concerted effort is underway to gain acceptance for, and implement, the idea that the United States should allow new immigrants to vote without becoming citizens. It is mounted by an alliance that brings together progressive academics, law professors, local and state political leaders, and community activists, all working to decouple voting from American citizenship. Their effort show signs of success, but is it really in America's best interests to allow new immigrants to have the vote? Their proposals have been much advocated, but little analyzed. Neither a polemic nor a whitewash, Stanley A. Renshon provides a careful analysis of the arguments put forward by advocates of this position on the basis of fairness, increasing democracy, civic learning, and moral necessity and asks: Do they really help immigrants become Americans?

The crisis can be overcome through the formation of a new industrial society of the second generation reliant on knowledge-intensive material production and gradual removal of humans from immediate material production processes. These two trends can fully develop only subject to the transition from the current socioeconomic formation to a non-economic one-the noonomy.
The book determines the limits of humans as rational, self-interested agents who make decisions to maximize their own interests, who remain the key figure of mainstream economy. In order to move beyond these limits and prevent self-destruction of human civilization, the author proposes a new methodology for the organization of socioeconomic knowledge-noonomy, which uses technological progress to introduce a rational core into the management of the chaotically developing economy, something which, the author posits, we have failed to accomplish so far due to cultural regression and moral decay.
Systematically substantiating his theory by drawing on a wide range of sources and extensive empirical data, Dr. Bodrunov incorporates various components of rational socio-philosophical, political, and economic analysis with institutional theory and sociocultural analysis and focuses on the geopolitical economy approach to the issue under consideration.
The volume begins with a discussion of the basic principles of the research method used in the book along with the an explanation of how the key role of material production constitutes an essential principle that underlies the approach to explaining social development processes. The author emphasizes an essential and ever-increasing role of knowledge in the development of production technologies that occurs through a change in technological modes and is accompanied by changes in the structure of manufactured products and evolution in the level of saturation and structure of human wants.
The volume then assesses the first steps towards transitioning to a new stage of industrial production, a new type of knowledge-intensive material production that manufactures knowledge-intensive products. The volume considers the risks associated with the unchecked development of new technologies, which, while expanding opportunities for the satisfaction of human wants, also increases environmental stress and requires the need for finding occupations for people who used to be employed in dying professions. The volume examines how humans' withdrawal from immediate production and the disappearance of economic relations serves as a non-economic way of regulating production activities of an autonomous technosphere by steering its development in accordance with personal development needs.
