Die ersten Flugzeuge, die im Ersten Weltkrieg am Himmel über den Schlachtfeldern auftauchten, zeigten kaum Anzeichen einer dominanten Zukunft von Flugzeugen in der Kriegsführung. Sie waren klein, zerbrechlich und langsam und ließen nichts von den schlanken Düsenjägern erahnen, die eines Tages schneller als der Schall über den Himmel der Erde rasen würden, um die tödliche Explosion und das Feuer hochentwickelter Raketen auszulösen, oder von den Bombern, die eine ganze Stadt mit einer Atombombe dem Erdboden gleichmachen könnten. Allerdings stellten sie auch keine völlige Neuheit in der Kriegsführung dar, zumindest nicht in den ersten Monaten des Ersten Weltkriegs. Während Flugzeuge noch nie zuvor über dem Kriegsschauplatz aufgetaucht waren, waren andere Luftfahrzeuge bereits seit Jahrzehnten im Einsatz, und Ballons hatten Soldaten über Jahrhunderte hinweg über die Landschaft befördert, um einen hohen Beobachtungspunkt zu bieten, der den meisten geologischen Merkmalen überlegen war. Die Franzosen setzten zu diesem Zweck in der Schlacht von Fleurus im Jahr 1794 einen Ballon ein, und während des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs wurden häufig militärische Wasserstoffballons eingesetzt, die aus Waggons befüllt wurden, die Wasserstoff aus Eisenspänen und Schwefelsäure erzeugten. Der Ballonfahrer Thaddeus Lowe überredete Präsident Abraham Lincoln, die Luftschiffe zur Beobachtung zu nutzen und Truppenbewegungen über ein Telegrafenkabel an den Boden zu übermitteln.

Während des Krieges erfolgten Flugzeugverbesserungen zunächst ad hoc, fast zufällig. Als sich jedoch die Bewaffnung von Flugzeugen durch Piloten als erfolgreiches Mittel erwies, um andere Flugzeuge zu besiegen und sogar Menschen am Boden anzugreifen, begann auf dem gesamten Kontinent eine viel aktivere und systematischere Entwicklung von Kampfflugzeugen. Jeder Fortschritt löste eine Gegenmaßnahme aus, da beide Seiten in einem tödlichen, gnadenlosen Umfeld um die Vorherrschaft strebten, in der echte Fortschritte in Ausrüstung und Taktik mit Überleben belohnt und schlechte Ideen mit dem Tod bestraft wurden. Schon bald schwirrten relativ starke, schwer bewaffnete Flugzeuge durch den Himmel über dem vom Kampf gezeichneten Europa, rissen sich gegenseitig mit wütenden Maschinengewehrfeuerböen auseinander und ließen viele der gepriesenen Luftschiffe brennend zu Boden stürzen. Die neue Ära der Kampfflugzeuge brach auf dramatische Weise an, erhob erfolgreiche Piloten zu Prominenten oder Helden und legte den Grundstein für das enorme Potenzial der Luftwaffe, ihre nächste logische Erweiterung im Zweiten Weltkrieg und darüber hinaus zu erreichen. Als der Zweite Weltkrieg begann, sah das Kampfflugzeug ganz anders aus als die speziell gebauten Flugzeugjagdmaschinen von 1917 und 1918. Obwohl Propeller immer noch als Antriebskraft dienten, konnten diese Flugzeuge dank der stark erhöhten Motorleistung mit Geschwindigkeiten von 200 Meilen pro Stunde, 300 Meilen pro Stunde oder sogar über 400 Meilen pro Stunde im Vollgas durch den Himmel rasen. Die Diensthöchstgrenzen stiegen auf 25.000 Fuß, 30.000 Fuß oder mehr, Höhen, die für die Flieger des Ersten Weltkriegs undenkbar waren. Technik sowie Forschung und Entwicklung begannen wissenschaftlich zu arbeiten, um die Steiggeschwindigkeit zu verkürzen und eine Vielzahl anderer Probleme und Möglichkeiten anzugehen.
Zu Beginn des Krieges, als die deutsche Luftwaffe zuerst gegen Polen und dann gegen die Royal Air Force flog, waren die Flugzeuge bereits schnelle, metallgepanzerte Jäger und Killer am Himmel, mit geschlossenen Cockpits, Panzerung und mächtigen Maschinengewehren, 20-mm-Kanonen und bald auch Raketen. Aber eine noch größere Veränderung stand bevor - die Geburt des Jet-Zeitalters, eine Zukunft, die kurz im spektakulären, aber zum Scheitern verurteilten Erscheinen der Messerschmitt Me 262 gegen Ende des Krieges erahnt wurde.
