Carl Martin Allwood, "The Nature and Challenges of Indigenous Psychologies "
English | ISBN: 1108461689 | 2018 | 78 pages | PDF | 854 KB
The indigenous psychologies (IPs) stress the importance of research being grounded in the conditions and culture of the researcher's own society due to the dominance of Western culture in mainstream psychology. The nature and challenges of the IPs are discussed from the perspectives of science studies and anthropology of knowledge (the study of human understanding in its social context). The Element describes general social conditions for the development of science and the IPs globally, and their development and form in some specific countries. Next, some more specific issues relating to the IPs are discussed. These issues include the nature of the IPs, scientific standards, type of culture concept favored, views on the philosophy of science, understanding of mainstream psychology, generalization of findings, and the IPs' isolation and independence. Finally, conclusions are drawn, for example with respect to the future of the IPs.

R. Michael Stewart, "The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures: Pennsylvania, 4000 to 3000 BP "
English | ISBN: 0271070951 | 2016 | 152 pages | PDF | 20 MB
Three thousand to four thousand years ago, the Native Americans of the mid-Atlantic region experienced a groundswell of cultural innovation. This remarkable era, known as the Transitional period, saw the advent of broad-bladed bifaces, cache blades, ceramics, steatite bowls, and sustained trade, among other ingenious and novel objects and behaviors. In The Nature and Pace of Change in American Indian Cultures, eight expert contributors examine the Transitional period in Pennsylvania and posit potential explanations of the significant changes in social and cultural life at that time.

Building upon sixty years of accumulated data, corrected radiocarbon dating, and fresh research, scholars are reimagining the ancient environment in which native people lived.

Christopher Prior, "The Ndebele, Frank Oates, and Knowledge Production in the 1870s: Encounters at the Edge of Empire "
English | ISBN: 303175963X | 2025 | 134 pages | EPUB, PDF | 4 MB + 2 MB
This open access book addresses a question fundamental to the histories of empire and Africa: at the point of the colonial encounter, how was knowledge made? How did different communities, with little or no prior contact, construct meaning about one another? Amidst huge changes in the politics and economics of a continent, on the cusp of almost complete colonization at the hands of European powers at the end of the nineteenth century, how do the specifics of personality and contingency affect knowledge production? An obvious challenge in addressing this sort of question is the frequent lack of African-produced source material; here, we must work within the 'archives of oppression' and read both along and against the colonial grain in an attempt to restore African agency to this process of knowledge production. Drawing on the previously never-used diaries of explorer Frank Oates, who travelled throughout Matabeleland in the 1870s, the use of a single traveller's experiences in detail affords us the means to consider the fine details of the interactions between Europeans and Africans. Therefore, this study seeks to enhance existing work on race and empire of the nineteenth century by asking: what place do the fragilities, uncertainties, and contingencies of encounters between individuals have in our understanding of how knowledge is made?

The Neuroscience of Psychedelics The Pharmacology of What Makes Us Human

a85844888d05867cd45d2328703586f3.webp

The Neuroscience of Psychedelics: The Pharmacology of What Makes Us Human by Genís Ona, José Carlos Bouso
English | October 8, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CVXV4KX2 | 256 pages | EPUB | 11 Mb
* Examines the main pharmacological properties of psychedelic substances, including LSD, DMT, psilocybin, ayahuasca, mescaline, ketamine, ibogaine, salvia, and MDMA

* Explains the physiological mechanisms behind visionary effects, including what is happening in the brain and how each psychedelic is processed by the body
* Shares safe strategies for using psychedelics, including harm-reduction techniques, and looks at where the future of psychedelic therapies is likely to go
With the widespread legalization of marijuana and the increasing use of psychoactives in controlled therapy settings, further research and understanding of psychedelics is now possible. Yet while individual accounts of their use abound, exactly what's happening to the brain and body when using these substances is still not widely understood.
Longtime pharmacological researcher Genís Ona presents a comprehensive look at the main pharmacological properties of psychedelic substances, including LSD, DMT, psilocybin, ayahuasca, mescaline, ketamine, ibogaine, salvia, tropane alkaloids, and MDMA. Exploring how psychedelics work within the brain, Ona shares results from his extensive research to reveal the physiological mechanisms that allow these molecules to have their visionary effects, explaining what is happening at the receptor level as well as the "cascade" effects that differ from substance to substance. He examines how the body processes each substance, describing how each psychedelic is released, absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated. He also details possible dangerous interactions between these substances and other drugs as well as their potential toxicity.
Although his main focus is the biological and neurological effects of psychedelics, Ona also explores the mystical and spiritual dimension of psychedelic use, particularly as practiced in Indigenous traditions, showing how they enable access to a profound spiritual territory. He shares safe strategies for using psychedelics and looks at where the future of psychedelic therapies is likely to go, with an emphasis on ensuring that traditional knowledge is respected, honored, and protected.

The New India The Unmaking of the World's Largest Democracy

72fd4a35595f4f0e7761b8e384f0000d.webp

The New India: The Unmaking of the World's Largest Democracy by Rahul Bhatia
English | November 12, 2024 | ISBN: 1541704002 | 448 pages | PDF | 4.01 Mb
A New York Times Notable Book of 2024

"An absorbing account of India's transformation" (The Guardian)from democracy towards autocracy told through "brilliant on-the-ground reportage" (The Times). Since Narendra Modi's election in May 2014, India has become more dysfunctional and dangerous than ever. The "world's largest democracy" has seen a cascade of events ushered in by a nationalistic and religious government that have threatened the freedoms and identities of its citizens. If you support Modi, you are a bhakt, among the devoted. If you do not, you are an urban naxal, an unpatriotic traitor, and enemy of the Hindu faith. There is, increasingly, no room in between.
In The New India, journalist Rahul Bhatia investigates this slow burn of democracy in India, connecting past and present to offer the first thorough account of how the country is sliding towards autocracy. He describes the religious, societal, and technological changes that have brought India to a point at which a nationalist mindset that despises democracy and human rights is spreading fast, all in an effort to bind the multiethnic, multilingual, and multicultural country into a single identity.
Through a character-driven narrative informed by on the ground reporting, he investigates the disinformation machine at the heart of the Modi government, the corrupt lawmakers whose work targets religious minorities, the police force bent on raiding every public newsroom, and the CEO behind the largest data collecting agency in the world whose invention has forever altered Indian elections. At the same time, Bhatia shows us the consequences of these efforts on everyday citizens-from Muslims attempting to hold on to their property to students protesting the government's overreach of their education to journalists being threatened for uttering a single word against the BJP party. What emerges is a timely, urgent and at times shocking portrait of a country that has turned on itself.

The Old Man and the Harley A Last Ride Through Our Fathers' America

John J. Newkirk, "The Old Man and the Harley: A Last Ride Through Our Fathers' America"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 1595551808 | EPUB | pages: 380 | 1.7 mb
Ride with a father and his son on an amazing journey through America's past.

In the summer of 1939, with the nation balanced between the Great Depression and the gathering winds of war, young Jack Newkirk set off on a rickety Harley to see both the New York and San Francisco World's Fairs. He had no way of knowing it was to e the autumn of his youth, and that his entire generation would soon be thrust into the most devastating conflict in history.
Seven decades later, author John J. Newkirk retraces this epic ride with his father, Jack, in a silent hope the old soldier will still be proud of the America he fought for. Each mile brings discovery as the author learns of his namesake, the heroic Squadron Leader of the legendar Flying Tigers, and of his father's life on the road and in the jungles of the South Pacific during World War II.
The result is quintessential Americana, a sweeping portrait of the grit, guts, ingenuity, and sacrifice that defined a nation, and a timely lesson from the Greatest Generation on how we can overcome our most pressing challenges and reclaim the American Dream.

The Open Door Early Modern Wajorese Statecraft and Diaspora

544065853b61b5ee42ae72ca6a4fe0df.webp

Kathryn Wellen, "The Open Door: Early Modern Wajorese Statecraft and Diaspora"
English | ISBN: 0875807127 | 2015 | 220 pages | PDF | 32 MB
The Wajorese people were one of many groups that spread across Indonesian during the early modern era. In the wake of the Makassar War (1666-1669), the Dutch took control of Makassar on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and used it to consolidate their power in the region. Because the Wajorese had sided with the war's losers, they were treated very harshly and many opted to emigrate. They scattered far and wide across the Southeast Asian archipelago, settling in eastern Kalimantan, western Sumatra, the Straits of Malacca, and the Sulawesian port city of Makassar.

Wellen reconstructs the fascinating and little-told story of the Wajorese diaspora. Wajorese migrants exhibited remarkable versatility in adapting to local conditions in the areas where they settled. They perpetuated their own culture overseas while simultaneously using various assimilation strategies such as intermarriage to thrive in their adopted homelands. Relations between Wajorese migrants and their homeland intensified in the early 18th century when successive rulers in Wajoq deliberately sought to harness the growing military and commercial potential of the migrant communities. This effort culminated in the 1730s when the exiled La Maddukelleng, an Indonesian national hero, returned to Makassar from neighboring eastern Kalimantan and attempted to expel the Dutch from South Sulawesi. His campaign exemplifies the manner in which overseas Wajorese remained an essential part of Wajoq long after they left home.

The Open Door Era United States Foreign Policy in the Twentieth Century

Michael Patrick Cullinane, "The Open Door Era: United States Foreign Policy in the Twentieth Century "
English | ISBN: 1474401309 | 2017 | 224 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Examines the Open Door, the most influential U.S. foreign policy of the twentieth century

In 1899, U.S. Secretary of State John Hay wrote six world powers calling for an 'Open Door' in China that would guarantee equal trading opportunities, curtail colonial annexation, and prevent conflict in the Far East. Within a year, the region had succumbed to renewed colonisation and war, but despite the apparent failure of Hay's diplomacy, the ideal of the Open Door emerged as the central component of U.S. foreign policy in the twentieth century. Just as visions of 'Manifest Destiny' shaped continental expansion in the nineteenth century, Woodrow Wilson used the Open Door to make the case for a world 'safe for democracy', Franklin Roosevelt developed it to inspire the fight against totalitarianism and imperialism, and Cold War containment policy envisioned international communism as the latest threat to a global system built upon peace, openness, and exchange. In a concise yet wide-ranging examination of its origins and development, readers will discover how the idea of the Open Door came to define the American Century.

The Pasha's Bedouin and Tribes and State in the Egypt of Mehmet 'Ali 1805-1848

Reuven Aharoni, "The Pasha's Bedouin and Tribes and State in the Egypt of Mehmet 'Ali 1805-1848"
English | 2007 | pages: 286 | ISBN: 0415350360, 0415595045 | PDF | 3,8 mb
Egypt's history is interwoven with conflicts of Bedouin, governments and peasants, competing over same cultivated lands and of migrations of nomads from the deserts to the Nile Valley. Mehemet Ali's era represented the initial ending of the traditional tribalism, and the beginning of emergence of a semi-urban community, which became an integral part of the sedentarised population.

Providing a new perspective on tribal life in Egypt under Mehemet Ali Pasha's rule, The Pasha's Bedouin examines the social and political aspects of the Bedouin during 1805-1848. By highlighting the complex relationships which developed between the government of the Pasha and the Bedouin, Reuven Aharoni sets out to expose the Bedouin as a specialised social sector of the urban economy and as integral to the economic and political life in Egypt at the time. This study aims to question of whether the elements of bureaucratic culture which characterised the central and provincial administration of the Pasha, indicate special attitudes towards this sector of the population. Subjects covered include:
- The 'Bedouin' policy of Mehemet Ali
- Territory and identity, tribal economies
- Tribe and state relations
- Tribal leadership
With a long experience in fieldwork among Bedouin in the Sinai and the Negev, as well as using a range of archival documents and manuscripts both in Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, this highly researched book provides an essential read for historians, anthropologists and political scientists in the field of social and political history of the Middle East.
Reuven Aharoni, Ph.D (2001) in Middle Eastern History, Tel-Aviv University, teaches history of the Middle East at the Haifa University and at the Open University of Israel.

The Patient No One Wanted

Katherine Norris Williams, "The Patient No One Wanted"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1642142166 | EPUB | pages: 128 | 0.2 mb
It was August 2004 when the white dove hit the windshield of my car as I was driving home from church. Did it give up its life to save me or was it foretelling my continued misery and/or death? Little did I know then, but this was only the beginning of my descent into hell. The Patient No One Wanted is about my exposure to toxic mold in my classroom at the high school where I taught, and it describes the way in which the exposure has affected me over the years. The title refers to my endless search for a doctor to help me. The school was closed for six weeks because parents had complained that their children were getting sick from mold. We held classes at the Bristol International Speedway while the school was supposedly being remediated. However, conditions were even worse when we returned. The school had a flat roof that held water and was conducive to growing algae, which in turn grew mold. Over the years the roof continually leaked, and ceiling tiles became soaked and fell to the floor. In addition, buckets had to be placed in the halls to collect water, and black debris ran down the walls. Many "modern," airtight schools have a similar moisture problem. Having been a biology teacher and considering my exposure, I researched the subject of toxic mold extensively and corresponded with several renowned experts, such as Dr. Harriet Burge, who helped pioneer the field of aerobiology (study of airborne microorganism) and developed and ran the program at Harvard for ten years. I also received feedback from Dr. Ruth Etzel, the director of EPA's office of Children's Health Protection. Dr. Etzel was the chief investigator into the cause of bleeding lungs in a cluster of infants from Cleveland, Ohio. The cause turned out to be the black mold, Stachybotrys. I want the world to know what toxic mold can do to one's health. Along with teachers, the children that attend these contaminated schools are among our most valuable resources for the future, and they are in jeopardy!
