Throughout my research in the history of science I have been struck by the interest of many key scientists in the origins of scientific concepts and the process of creative thinking, particularly its intui- tive dimension. These scientists saw apparently disparate subjects as being related because the depth of their research had led them to consider the process of thinking itself. This book explores the con- nection of creative scientific thinking with the origins of scientific concepts and the ways in which this connection may provide a better understanding of scientific progress. Thus my concern here is with individuals, with the detailed structure of scientific change, and not with its macrostructure.

I have chosen to study Niels Bohr, Ludwig Boltzmann, Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and Henri Poincare. Through their work, the period 1900-1950 was one in which our customary notions of space, time, causality, and substance were transformed as never before. These philosopher-scientists were chiefly responsible for set- ting the intellectual milieu of the twentieth century.
I have developed the history, philosophy, psychology, and science contained herein with the goal of reaching the widest possible audi- ence. Every effort has been made to render this book self-contained. Parts I and II contain historical case studies of Bohr, Boltzmann, Einstein, Heisenberg, and Poincare from which emerge the philo- sophical-scientific currents of their times. The analyses strive to elucidate their styles of thinking, particularly their modes of mental imagery. These results are input for the cognitive psychological anal- yses in Part III that explore creative scientific thinking. Thus, in Part III, the history of science is used as a laboratory for cognitive psy- chology.
My recent book, Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity: Emer- gence (1905) and Early Interpretation (1905-1911), probed the problem of creativity for a particular case, with emphasis on scientific and philosophical aspects. I concluded that book by suggesting the need for further investigation into the imagery in Albert Einstein's thought experiments. This is among the topics developed here. Like that book, this one concludes with problems for further work. That is the manner in which my essays often end, and that is the way it should be when the history of science is defined broadly enough to be considered part of the history of ideas
It is my hope that this book will serve as a catalyst for increasing interaction between cognitive psychologists and historians of sci- ence, so that we may amplify each other's intellectual strengths for a multidisciplinary approach to a fascinating problem in the history of ideas: creative scientific thinking.

Hundreds of cases of officers of the Wehrmacht and the SS, as well as of the Royal Italian and the Imperial Japanese Armies have been grouped by the author in two main categories: those who were taken prisoner by Allied forces and those who surrendered to them. This is not a book about military might, but about people, many of whom were proven innocent victims of circumstance. Officers who committed suicide to avoid capture and others who were charged and punished as war criminals are separately presented, along with a great number of foreign volunteers who were captured by or surrendered to Allied forces during the war, after joining units of the German or the Japanese Armies. Members of the military and secretarial staff of Adolf Hitler who were imprisoned after the German capitulation are also highlighted in the book, along with cases of high-ranking officers in co-belligerent Romania, who were harshly punished by their country's post-war communist authorities for being anti-communists and for having fought against the Red Army. Another category also examined by the author are the German prisoners who were handed over to Joseph Stalin by the western Allies in May 1945 as a gesture of friendship, although the Soviet Union had not signed the Geneva Convention. This book is a concise, authoritative account of the Axis POWs, being also an unrivalled source of information on the subject.

Health literacy is the degree to which individuals can obtain, process, and understand the basic health information and services they need to make appropriate health decisions. According to Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion (IOM, 2004), nearly half of all American adults-90 million people-have inadequate health literacy to navigate the healthcare system. To address issues raised in that report, the Institute of Medicine convened the Roundtable on Health Literacy, which brings together leaders from the federal government, foundations, health plans, associations, and private companies to discuss challenges facing health literacy practice and research and to identify approaches to promote health literacy in both the public and private sectors. On November 30, 2010, the roundtable cosponsored a workshop with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Anderson School of Management in Los Angeles. Improving Health Literacy Within a State serves as a summary of what occurred at the workshop. The workshop focused on understanding what works to improve health literacy across a state, including how various stakeholders have a role in improving health literacy. The focus of the workshop was on presentations and discussions that address (1) the clinical impacts of health literacy improvement approaches; (2) economic outcomes of health literacy implementation; and (3) how various stakeholders can affect health literacy.

The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), at the U.S. National Foundation, is 1 of 14 major statistical agencies in the federal government, of which at least 5 collect relevant information on science, technology, and innovation activities in the United States and abroad. The America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 expanded and codified NCSES's role as a U.S. federal statistical agency. This report assesses and provides recommendations regarding the need for revised, refocused, and newly developed indicators designed to better reflect fundamental and rapid changes that are reshaping global science, technology and innovation systems. The book also determines the international scope of STI indicators and the need for developing new indicators that measure developments in innovative activities in the United States and abroad, and Offers foresight on the types of data, metrics and indicators that will be particularly influential in evidentiary policy decision-making for years to come. In carrying out its charge, the authoring panel undertook a broad and comprehensive review of STI indicators from different countries, including Japan, China, India and several countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. Improving Measures of Science, Technology, and Innovation makes recommendations for near-term action by NCSES along two dimensions: (1) development of new policy-relevant indicators that are based on NCSES survey data or on data collections at other statistical agencies; and (2) exploration of new data extraction and management tools for generating statistics, using automated methods of harvesting unstructured or scientometric data and data derived from administrative records.
