Mirrors of the Economy National Accounts and International Norms in Russia and Beyond

Mirrors of the Economy: National Accounts and International Norms in Russia and Beyond By Yoshiko M. Herrera
2011 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 0801460506 | PDF | 1 MB
As international institutions multiply and more governments sign on to standardized ways of organizing economies and societies, resistance to globalization persists. In Mirrors of the Economy, Yoshiko M. Herrera explores the variance in implementation of international institutions through an examination of the international System of National Accounts (SNA), and, in particular, the success of post-Soviet Russia and other formerly communist countries in implementing the SNA. The SNA is the basis for all national economic indicators, including Gross Domestic Product, and is therefore a critical institution for economic policy and development.Herrera tests existing theories of implementation of international institutions and proposes a novel theoretical concept, "conditional norms," to suggest that the conditions attached to norms may result in institutional change. On the basis of content analysis of statistical publications and more than seventy-five interviews throughout Russia-particularly in Moscow-and in Washington she forms a clear picture of the implementation of SNA in Russia in the early 1990s. In Soviet times a stable conditional norm delineated the appropriateness of statistical institutions based on the structure of the economy. The transformation of the economic system triggered a shift in support among Russian and Eastern European statisticians in favor of the SNA. Herrera's argument increases our understanding of the role of norms, structural conditions, and professional communities in institutional implementation.

Missionaries, Anthropologists, and Music in the Indonesian Archipelago

Anna Maria Busse Berger, "Missionaries, Anthropologists, and Music in the Indonesian Archipelago"
English | ISBN: 0520400569 | 2025 | 348 pages | PDF | 19 MB
A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visitwww.luminosoa.orgto learn more.

Although the history of Indonesian music has received much attention from ethnomusicologists and Western composers alike, almost nothing has been written on the interaction of missionaries with local culture. This study represents the first attempt to concentrate on the musical dimension of missionary activities in Indonesia. In fourteen essays, a group of distinguished scholars show the complexity of the topic: while some missionaries did important scholarship on local music, making recordings and attempting to use local music in services, others tried to suppress whatever they found. Many were collaborating closely with anthropologists who admitted freely that they could not have done their work without them. And both parties brought colonial biases into their work. By grappling with these realities and records, this book is a collective effort to decolonize the project of making music histories.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies Against Climate Change in Natural Systems

fa5cdd6dd97d69edfe0adb545841cc18.webp

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies Against Climate Change in Natural Systems
by Rajiv Kumar Srivastava and Arun Chakraborty
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031759672 | 584 Pages | True PDF | 24 MB

This book addresses strategies for mitigating and adapting to climate change in natural systems. According to the IPCC (2021) report, human-induced climate change has widespread global effects, significantly impacting natural ecosystems. Extreme weather events linked to climate change harm terrestrial, freshwater, ocean, and coastal ecosystems, reduce food security, displace populations, damage livelihoods, health, and security, and exacerbate inequality. While the impacts of climate change are vast and varied, making it impossible to cover every sector, the authors have aimed to address key areas and offer strategies for combating climate change through mitigation and adaptation. The book is structured into five sections:
* Land (agriculture, horticulture, soil, forest)
* Water (rivers, lakes)
* Atmosphere (hydrology, climate)
* Technologies/Approaches (remote sensing, GIS, AI tools, ChatGPT)
* Case Studies (crops, forests, soil glomalin application, eco-friendly fertilizers), with a focus on modelling approaches to assess these strategies.
Additionally, the authors reviewed related works on climate change mitigation and adaptation, identifying a gap in using newer technologies and approaches. The book also covers topics such as water quality and the analysis of several greenhouse gases such ad NO2, O3, CO2 and CH4 in the environment. This book will be beneficial for students, educators, professionals, researchers, policymakers, and farmers. It provides content ranging from introductory to advanced levels, making it accessible to those working in environmental science.

Model Minority Masochism: Performing the Cultural Politics of Asian American Masculinity by Takeo Rivera
English | April 26, 2022 | ISBN: 0197557481, 019755749X, 9780197557518 | True EPUB | 224 pages | 10.2 MB
There are few grand narratives that loom over Asian Americans more than the model minority. While many Asian Americanist scholars and activists aim to disprove the model minority as myth, author Takeo Rivera instead rethinks the model minority as cultural politics. Rather than disproving the model minority, Rivera instead argues that Asian Americans have formulated their racial and gendered subjectivities in relation to what Rivera terms model minority masochism.

Examining hegemonic masculine Asian American cultural performance across multiple media, from literature and theater to videogames and activist archives, Rivera details two complementary forms of contemporary racial masochism: a self-subjugating masochism which embraces the model minority, and its opposite, a self-flagellating masochism that punishes oneself for having been associated with the model minority at all.

Modern Trends and Research in Intermodal Transportation by Aleksander Sładkowski
English | EPUB | 2022 | 566 Pages | ISBN : 3030871193 | 144.8 MB
This book presents a specific technical solution, called intermodal transport, which became the basic technological solution that made it possible to provide global interregional transport. Every day, new technical, technological, and organizational solutions appear that significantly affect the further development of this industry.

However, there are certain local differences between regions. In addition, an essential factor is the exchange of experience between scientists from different countries. Accordingly, the purpose of this monothematic book is to acquaint readers with the achievements of scientists dealing with this topic and living in different regions. Scientists and specialists from Poland, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Lithuania participated in the writing of individual chapters of this book. This book is intended for professionals, teachers, students, and others who are interested in new approaches to solving transport problems.

Moral Institutions An Introduction to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

Mario I. Juarez-Garcia, "Moral Institutions: An Introduction to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics"
English | ISBN: 1032903228 | 2025 | 212 pages | EPUB, PDF | 5 MB + 4 MB
Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) is a promising approach to understanding our complex world and addressing contemporary social issues. But what is it? In this book, Mario I. Juarez-Garcia, straightforwardly explains to beginners what PPE is and why it's so useful. The book uses a unified PPE approach for undergraduate students that differs from a simple combination of moral philosophy, political science, and economics so that the reader can appreciate PPE's distinct and unique virtues. It focuses on two institutions that have been fundamental in making the world a better place: governments and markets. By the end, the reader can see why finding the right answer to many unprecedented questions is so difficult in a morally diverse society. But the take-away message for students is that it is the diversity of our liberal, Open Societies that has made them prosperous and well worth the frustrations of living in a complex, dynamic and uncertain world. Each chapter begins with short lists of "What You Need to Remember" and ends with "Testing the Reading" questions, helping guide the student reader throughout the book.

Mornings Without Mii

Mornings Without Mii by Mayumi Inaba, translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori
English | February 25, 2025 | ISBN: 0374614784, 9780374614799 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 0.6 MB
A beloved Japanese modern classic: a meditation on solitude, independence, writing, and life alongside a cat.

On a cool summer evening in 1977, Mayumi Inaba hears a forlorn cry carried by the breeze off Tokyo's Tamagawa River. She follows the sound to the riverbank and finds a newborn kitten only the size of her palm dangling from a fence, abandoned. Overcome by tender affection, she takes the cat back to the small apartment she shares with her husband and christens her Mii: so begins an ineffable bond.
Over the next twenty years, we follow Inaba, a poet and novelist by moonlight, as she pursues quiet, solitude, and a room of her own. Through it all, her cat, a fiercely independent creature in her own right, is her confidante and muse.
From the late Mayumi Inaba, a winner of the Kawabata Prize and the Tanizaki Prize, Mornings Without Mii is not just a love letter to companionship: it's a poignant, searching meditation on the forces that enable us to connect, to create, and to build a life.

Motherhood, the Elephant in the Laboratory Women Scientists Speak Out

3942cced6db794966dffea18a3d1eb46.webp

Motherhood, the Elephant in the Laboratory: Women Scientists Speak Out By Emily Monosson (editor)
2011 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 0801459079 | PDF | 1 MB
About half of the undergraduate and roughly 40 percent of graduate degree recipients in science and engineering are women. As increasing numbers of these women pursue research careers in science, many who choose to have children discover the unique difficulties of balancing a professional life in these highly competitive (and often male-dominated) fields with the demands of motherhood. Although this issue directly affects the career advancement of women scientists, it is rarely discussed as a professional concern, leaving individuals to face the dilemma on their own.To address this obvious but unacknowledged crisis-the elephant in the laboratory, according to one scientist-Emily Monosson, an independent toxicologist, has brought together 34 women scientists from overlapping generations and several fields of research-including physics, chemistry, geography, paleontology, and ecology, among others-to share their experiences. From women who began their careers in the 1970s and brought their newborns to work, breastfeeding them under ponchos, to graduate students today, the authors of the candid essays written for this groundbreaking volume reveal a range of career choices: the authors work part-time and full-time; they opt out and then opt back in; they become entrepreneurs and job share; they teach high school and have achieved tenure. The personal stories that comprise Motherhood, the Elephant in the Laboratory not only show the many ways in which women can successfully combine motherhood and a career in science but also address and redefine what it means to be a successful scientist. These valuable narratives encourage institutions of higher education and scientific research to accommodate the needs of scientists who decide to have children.Contributors: A. Natural Language Information Retrieval

42de4acb1b43ae80cc038f690a813b0a.webp

Natural Language Information Retrieval by Tomek Strzalkowski
English | PDF | 1999 | 407 Pages | ISBN : 0792356853 | 42.8 MB
The last decade has been one of dramatic progress in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This hitherto largely academic discipline has found itself at the center of an information revolution ushered in by the Internet age, as demand for human-computer communication and informa tion access has exploded. Emerging applications in computer-assisted infor mation production and dissemination, automated understanding of news, understanding of spoken language, and processing of foreign languages have given impetus to research that resulted in a new generation of robust tools, systems, and commercial products. Well-positioned government research funding, particularly in the U. S. , has helped to advance the state-of-the art at an unprecedented pace, in no small measure thanks to the rigorous 1 evaluations. This volume focuses on the use of Natural Language Processing in In formation Retrieval (IR), an area of science and technology that deals with cataloging, categorization, classification, and search of large amounts of information, particularly in textual form. An outcome of an information retrieval process is usually a set of documents containing information on a given topic, and may consist of newspaper-like articles, memos, reports of any kind, entire books, as well as annotated image and sound files. Since we assume that the information is primarily encoded as text, IR is also a natural language processing problem: in order to decide if a document is relevant to a given information need, one needs to be able to understand its content.

Natural Light The Art of Adam Elsheimer and the Dawn of Modern Science

Natural Light: The Art of Adam Elsheimer and the Dawn of Modern Science by Julian Bell
English | June 13, 2023 | ISBN: 0500024073 | 256 pages | MOBI | 84 Mb
A brand-new perspective on early modern art and its relationship with nature as reflected in this moving account of overlooked artistic genius Adam Elsheimer, by an outstanding writer and critic.

Seventeenth-century Europe swirled with conjectures and debates over what was real and what constituted "nature," currents that would soon gather force to form modern science.
Natural Light deliberates on the era's uncertainties, as distilled in the work of long underappreciated artist Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610), a native of Frankfurt who settled in Rome and whose diminutive and mysterious narrative compositions related figures to landscape in new ways, projecting unfamiliar visions of space at a time when Caravaggio was polarizing audiences with his radical altarpieces and early modern scientists were starting to turn to the new "world system" of Galileo. His visual inventions influenced many famous artists―including Rembrandt van Rijn, Claude Lorrain, and Nicolas Poussin.
Julian Bell guides the reader through key Elsheimer artworks, examining the contexts behind them before exploring the new imaginative thoughts that opened up in their wake. He also explores the experiences of Elsheimer and other Northern artists in the literary, artistic, and scientific culture of 1600s Rome.
Although his life was tragically short, Elsheimer's legacy endured and prints of his work were widely spread throughout Europe, with his influence extending as far as the Indian subcontinent. 106 color illustrations

Natural Resource Sovereignty and the Right to Development in Africa

Carol Chi Ngang, "Natural Resource Sovereignty and the Right to Development in Africa "
English | ISBN: 1032049065 | 2021 | 328 pages | EPUB, PDF | 3 MB + 9 MB
This book explores the nexus between natural resources ownership and the right to development in Africa.

The right to sovereignty over natural resources and the right to development are recognised and protected in an extensive framework of international, regional and domestic instruments. They guarantee people's entitlement to fully and freely utilise their natural resources as a means of subsistence and for economic, social and cultural development. Yet, despite the abundance of natural resources in Africa a majority of the people on the continent remain largely impoverished. This book articulates the central argument that to achieve the right to development in Africa requires appropriate governance of the continent's natural resources to which the people of Africa are guaranteed sovereign ownership. With case study illustrations from Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, chapters explore the normative measures, specific guarantees and community entitlements to natural resources for the realisation of the right to development.

Networked Politics: Agency, Power, and Governance By Miles Kahler (editor)
2010 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0801458889 | PDF | 1 MB
The concept of network has emerged as an intellectual centerpiece for our era. Network analysis also occupies a growing place in many of the social sciences. In international relations, however, network has too often remained a metaphor rather than a powerful theoretical perspective. In Networked Politics, a team of political scientists investigates networks in important sectors of international relations, including human rights, security agreements, terrorist and criminal groups, international inequality, and governance of the Internet. They treat networks as either structures that shape behavior or important collective actors. In their hands, familiar concepts, such as structure, power, and governance, are awarded new meaning.Contributors:Peter Cowhey, University of California, San Diego; Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni, University of Cambridge and Sidney Sussex College;Zachary Elkins, University of Texas at Austin; Emilie M. Neuroscience of Enduring Change Implications for Psychotherapy

32511a15ca61cc8a93fe51696db2e141.webp

Neuroscience of Enduring Change: Implications for Psychotherapy edited by Lynn Nadel, Richard D. Lane
English | March 10, 2020 | ISBN: 0190881518, 9780190881542 | True EPUB | 504 pages | 3.7 MB
Neuroscience of Enduring Change is founded on the premise that all major psychotherapy modalities producing enduring change do so by virtue of corrective emotional experiences that alter problematic memories through the process of reconsolidation. This book is unique in linking basic science concepts to clinical research and clinical application. Experts in each area address each of the basic science and clinical topics. No other book addresses a general mechanism of change in psychotherapy in combination with the basic science underpinning it.

This book is also unique in bringing the latest neuroimaging evidence and cutting-edge conceptual approaches to bear in understanding how psychological and behavioral treatment approaches bring about lasting change in the brain. Clinicians will benefit from the detailed discussion of basic mechanisms that underpin their clinical interventions and will be challenged to consider how their approach to therapy might be adjusted to optimize the opportunities for enduring change. Researchers will benefit from authoritative reviews of extant knowledge and a clear description of the research agenda going forward. The cross-fertilization between the research and clinical domains is evident throughout.
