The Intellectual Heritage of the Ancient Near East: Proceedings of the 64th Rencontre Assyriologique International and the 12th Melammu Symposium, University of Innsbruck, July 16-20, 2018
by Martin Lang, Irene Madreiter
English | 2023 | ISBN: 370018574X | 905 Pages | PDF | 25 MB

In July 2018 the 64th Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale (RAI) and the 12th Melammu Symposium were held together in Innsbruck. The topic of the conference, "The Intellectual Heritage of the Ancient Near East", represented one of the main scientific objectives of the Melammu Project and aimed to investigate the continuity, transformation, diffusion and legacy of Ancient Near Eastern cultures from the third millennium BCE until the rise of Islam and beyond. The conference, hosting more than 200 papers, was a unique opportunity to discuss various aspects of the main theme, as well as other topics related to organized workshops. The forty papers and two keynotes in this volume provide an excellent selection of the lively discussions that took place during the conference.

The Intellectual Thought of Al-Ghazālī

a6c1ba994cfd90724ecae5ff86e6e1f4.webp

The Intellectual Thought of Al-Ghazālī: The Alchemy of Happiness and other Persian Writing
by Ali Mirsepassi, Tadd Graham Fernée
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009538160 | 271 Pages | PDF | 2.24 MB

Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazālī (1058-1111) was one of the most influential philosophers of the classical Islamic period, with his intellectual innovations spanning the fields of theology, logic, and law. Despite this, contemporary assessments of Ghazālī often present him as hostile to rationality, and a guardian of dogma and orthodoxy. This study provides an innovative reassessment of Ghazālī's legacy, offering a compelling depiction of a reformer in his own time with increasing relevance to the issues gripping multicultural and globalized societies today. Ali Mirsepassi and Tadd Graham Fernée closely study Ghazālī's major Persian-language text Kīmīyā-e saʿādat (The Alchemy of Happiness) and its scholarly reception, alongside his lesser-read works, arguing that Ghazālī shared a message of reform, and critique of Abbasid institutions. Ghazālī's critical stance is revealed as both pragmatic and cosmopolitan in its recognition of autonomy from religion in many aspects of life, and in the value placed upon scientific contribution.

The Internal Fabric of Western Security

Gregory Flynn, "The Internal Fabric of Western Security "
English | ISBN: 1032978635 | 2025 | 266 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Changes in domestic economic and political conditions, together with a loss of confidence in the United States leadership produced serious problems within the Atlantic Alliance. The Internal Fabric of Western Security (first published in 1981) examines the effects of domestic change upon perceived security requirements and explores ways to deal with the problems that developed.

Beginning with an examination of Allied and European relations, the book outlines external challenges to security that the Alliance faces in the 1980s and discusses internal problems that affect member nations' ability to deal with them. Country studies of the four largest European members of the Alliance systematically examine domestic constraints on security policy and assess probable approaches for the 1980s. A more general analysis is offered on how this situation affects the Allies' ability to work together in dealing with their common security problems. The need to integrate economic and military requirements is also discussed.

The Interpretation of Old English Poems

The Interpretation of Old English Poems By Stanley B. Greenfield
2023 | 172 Pages | ISBN: 103254306X | EPUB | 1 MB
The Interpretation of Old English Poems (1972) is a challenging approach in the critical appreciation of Old English poems. Professor Greenfield argues in particular against two inhibiting orientations in criticism of Anglo-Saxon poetry: an insensitive and too-narrowly defined historicism, and a blinkered philological tradition. He suggests ways in which the practical criticism of Old English poetry and poems can be conducted, and provides the means for a student to form his own critical approach. The book is particularly challenging in that it brings literary criticism into a field which has hitherto belonged largely to historians and linguists.

The Invention of Prehistory Empire, Violence, and Our Obsession with Human Origins

3ccf88388b4d471f627368bf7213aff6.webp

Stefanos Geroulanos, "The Invention of Prehistory: Empire, Violence, and Our Obsession with Human Origins"
English | ISBN: 1324091452 | 2024 | 512 pages | AZW3 | 13 MB
"[A]n incisive and captivating reassessment of prehistory . . . In lucid prose, Geroulanos unspools an enthralling and detailed history of the development of modern natural science. It's a must-read." ―✅Publishers Weekly, starred review

"An astute, powerfully rendered history of humanity." ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review
An eminent historian tells the story of how we came to obsess over the origins of humanity―and how, for three centuries, ideas of prehistory have been used to justify devastating violence against others.
Books about the origins of humanity dominate bestseller lists, while national newspapers present breathless accounts of new archaeological findings and speculate about what those findings tell us about our earliest ancestors. We are obsessed with prehistory―and, in this respect, our current era is no different from any other in the last three hundred years. In this coruscating work, acclaimed historian Stefanos Geroulanos demonstrates how claims about the earliest humans not only shaped Western intellectual culture, but gave rise to our modern world.
The very idea that there was a human past before recorded history only emerged with the Enlightenment, when European thinkers began to reject faith-based notions of humanity and history in favor of supposedly more empirical ideas about the world. From the "state of nature" and Romantic notions of virtuous German barbarians to theories about Neanderthals, killer apes, and a matriarchal paradise where women ruled, Geroulanos captures the sheer variety and strangeness of the ideas that animated many of the major thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Charles Darwin, and Karl Marx. Yet as Geroulanos shows, such ideas became, for the most part, the ideological foundations of repressive regimes and globe-spanning empires. Deeming other peoples "savages" allowed for guilt-free violence against them; notions of "killer apes" who were our evolutionary predecessors made war seem natural. The emergence of modern science only accelerated the West's imperialism. The Nazi obsession with race was rooted in archaeological claims about prehistoric IndoGermans; the idea that colonialized peoples could be "bombed back to the Stone Age" was made possible by the technology of flight and the anthropological idea that civilization advanced in stages.
As Geroulanos argues, accounts of prehistory tell us more about the moment when they are proposed than about the deep past―and if we hope to start improving our future, we would be better off setting aside the search for how it all started. A necessary, timely, indelible account of how the quest for understanding the origins of humanity became the handmaiden of war and empire,

The Iron Cage The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood

The Iron Cage: The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood By Rashid Khalidi
2023 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 1851685820 | EPUB | 1 MB
At a time when a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis seems virtually unattainable, understanding the roots of the longest-running conflict in the Middle East is an essential step in restoring hope to the region. In The Iron Cage, Rashid Khalidi, one of the most respected historians and political observers of the Middle East, examines the Palestinian's struggle for statehood, presenting a succinct and insightful history of the people and their leadership throughout the twentieth century.Ranging from the Palestinian struggle against colonial rule and the establishment of the State of Israel to the current rivalry between Hamas and Fatah, this is an unflinching and sobering critique of the Palestinian failure to achieve statehood, as well as a balanced account of the odds ranged against them. Lucid yet challenging, Rashid Khalidi's engrossing narrative of this tortuous history is required reading for anyone concerned about peace in the Middle East.

Dimitris Kousouris, "The Island of the Pope: Catholics in the Aegean Archipelago between Empire and Nation-State, 1770-1830"
English | ISBN: 1805398598 | 2025 | 258 pages | PDF | 3 MB
For the Aegean island of Syros, the Greek Revolution (1821-1832) marked a significant turning point. Known as "the island of the Pope", due to its Catholic majority, Syros transformed into a major commercial hub, seemingly triggering the withdrawal of its indigenous Latin community. Juxtaposing the view from the Archipelago with that from Istanbul, the Peloponnese, Rome, Paris and Vienna, this volume revisits the island's history. From early encounters between native inhabitants and groups from across the Ottoman Levant, to how the Latin community navigated conflict and change during the Greek War of Independence, this book offers new insights into the political, cultural and social history of the region.

The Jewish Writings

f0f4bb8b01ca39ca918733da882efb62.webp

The Jewish Writings by Hannah Arendt, edited by Jerome Kohn, Ron H. Feldman
English | March 13, 2007 | ISBN: 0805242384, 9780307496287 | True EPUB | 640 pages | 2.4 MB
Although Hannah Arendt is not primarily known as a Jewish thinker, she probably wrote more about Jewish issues than any other topic. When she was in her mid-twenties and still living in Germany, Arendt wrote about the history of German Jews as a people living in a land that was not their own. In 1933, at the age of twenty-six, she fled to France, where she helped to arrange for German and eastern European Jewish youth to quit Europe and become pioneers in Palestine.

During her years in Paris, Arendt's principal concern was with the transformation of antisemitism from a social prejudice to a political policy, which would culminate in the Nazi "final solution" to the Jewish question-the physical destruction of European Jewry. After France fell at the beginning of World War II, Arendt escaped from an internment camp in Gurs and made her way to the United States. Almost immediately upon her arrival in New York she wrote one article after another calling for a Jewish army to fight the Nazis, and for a new approach to Jewish political thinking. After the war, her attention was focused on the creation of a Jewish homeland in a binational (Arab-Jewish) state of Israel.
Although Arendt's thoughts eventually turned more to the meaning of human freedom and its inseparability from political life, her original conception of political freedom cannot be fully grasped apart from her experience as a Jew. In 1961 she attended Adolf Eichmann's trial in Jerusalem. Her report on that trial, Eichmann in Jerusalem, provoked an immense controversy, which culminated in her virtual excommunication from the worldwide Jewish community. Today that controversy is the subject of serious re-evaluation, especially among younger people in America, Europe, and Israel.
The publication of The Jewish Writings-much of which has never appeared before-traces Arendt's life and thought as a Jew. It will put an end to any doubts about the centrality, from beginning to end, of Arendt's Jewish experience.

The Johnny Chronicles

John Peterson, "The Johnny Chronicles"
English | ISBN: 1667822667 | 2022 | 456 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
The Johnny Chronicles (a factual written account of important or historical events in the order of their occurrence) describes Johnny's life in more or less chronological order. It starts on the beach when Johnny was three years old and ends in the doctor's office when Johnny was seventy-five. In between are fourty-nine chapter/vignettes which describe in detail (some might say horrific detail) things that happened to him and/or things that happened to others in Johnny's presence for which he may or may not be responsible. Some of these experiences are good, some are bad, and some are just plain ugly. However, it's a good read and a good lesson on how to live an amazing life. Johnny's advice to the reader is buy a board and start surfing - you will thank me.

The Joy of Philosophy Thinking Thin versus the Passionate Life

6635ac1dd98f0b90a2fc33ab76ee1bc6.webp

The Joy of Philosophy: Thinking Thin versus the Passionate Life By Robert C. Solomon
1999 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0195067592 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Joy of Philosophy is a return to some of the perennial questions of philosophy--questions about the meaning of life; about death and tragedy; about the respective roles of rationality and passion in the good life; about love, compassion, and revenge; about honesty, deception, and betrayal; and about who we are and how we think about who we are. Recapturing the heart-felt confusion and excitement that originally brings us all to philosophy, internationally renowned teacher and lecturer Robert C. Solomon offers both a critique of contemporary philosophy and an invitation to engage in philosophy in a different way. He attempts to save philosophy from itself and its self-imposed diet of thin arguments and logical analysis to recover the richness and complexity of life in thought. Solomon defends the passionate life in contrast to the life of thoughtful contemplation idealized by so many philosophers, attempting to recapture the kind of philosophy that Nietzsche celebrated as a "joyful wisdom."

The Killing Fields of East New York

The Killing Fields of East New York: The First Subprime Mortgage Scandal, a White-Collar Crime Spree, and the Collapse of an American Neighborhood by Stacy Horn
English | January 28, 2025 | ISBN: 1638931224 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 2 MB
In this groundbreaking work of investigative journalism and true crime, Stacy Horn sheds light on how the subprime mortgage scandal of the 1970s and a long history of white-collar crime slowly devastated East New York, a Brooklyn neighborhood that would come to be known as the Killing Fields.

On a warm summer evening in 1991, seventeen-year-old Julia Parker was murdered in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York. An area known for an exorbitant level of violence and crime, East New York had come to be known as the Killing Fields. In the six months after Julia Parker's death, 62 more people were murdered in the same area. In the early 1990s, murder rates in the neighborhood climbed to the highest in NYPD history. East New York was dying.
But how did this once thriving, diverse, family neighborhood fall into such ruin? The answer can be found two decades earlier. In response to redlining and discriminatory housing practices, the Johnson administration passed the Housing and Urban Development Act in 1968. The Federal Housing Authority aimed to use this piece of legislation to help low-income families of color finally achieve homeownership. But they could never have predicted how banks, lenders, realtors, and corrupt FHA officials themselves would use the newly passed law to make victims of the very people they were supposed to help, and the devastation they would leave in their wake.
A compulsively readable hybrid of true crime and investigative journalism, The Killing Fields of East New York reveals how white-collar crime reduced a prospering neighborhood to abandoned buildings and empty lots. Following the dual threads of the hunt for the network of criminals behind the first subprime mortgage scandal and the ensuing downfall of East New York, Stacy Horn weaves a compelling narrative of government failure, a desperate community, and ultimately the largest series of mortgage fraud prosecutions in American history. The Killing Fields of East New York deftly demonstrates how different types of crime are profoundly entangled, and how the crimes committed in nice suits and corner offices are just as destructive as those committed on the street.

It also abstracts the underlying infrastructure so that you don't need to care if you're deploying applications to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or your own on-premises datacenter. With Kubernetes, you can develop applications on your laptop, deploy to your favourite cloud platform, migrate to a different cloud platform, and even migrate to your private cloud at your on-premises datacenter.
The Kubernetes Book starts from the beginning, explains all concepts in a clear and friendly manner, and covers everything needed for you to become proficient at Kubernetes. It even includes two chapters dedicated to threat-modeling Kubernetes and real-world security.
You'll learn:
- Kubernetes architecture
- How to build Kubernetes

On impulse she decides to head south. What starts as an impromptu joy-ride rapidly becomes a nightmare when strangers all along the unfamiliar route swear they recognise Dany from the previous day. But that's impossible: she was at work, she was in Paris, she was miles away . . . wasn't she?

The Laissez-Faire Peasant: Post-Socialist Rural Development in Serbia
by Jovana Diković
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1800087594 | 258 Pages | True PDF | 8.3 MB

In rural development studies there are two mainstream assumptions. One holds that peasants are the victims of state rural development schemes, the other that only planning can ensure change and prosperity in rural regions. It is rarely considered that peasants are architects of their own and local wellbeing - notions which are often in opposition to state plans for agriculture. The Laissez-Faire Peasant explores how rural development emerges on the ground. The concept involves the manifestation of peasant worldviews in which autonomy in decision-making, freedom of action, spontaneity, and flexibility in everyday cooperation play a dominant role. A role in which individual and local values generate a self-regulating system that manages a range of economic, social, and political relationships. The book examines manifestations of peasant autonomy, both in response to and independent of state rural development policies through a multi-sited ethnography of three Serbian villages. It is shown how these factors impede state programs for rural development while enabling the spontaneous flourishing of local communities. By focusing on the agency of rural residents, the book finds that peasants are resilient and competent agents who do not need government plans to thrive.

The Land Shall Not Be Sold in Perpetuity The Jewish National Fund and the History ...

Yossi Katz, "The Land Shall Not Be Sold in Perpetuity: The Jewish National Fund and the History of State Ownership of Land in Israel"
English | ISBN: 3110415933 | 2016 | 248 pages | EPUB, PDF | 7 MB + 6 MB
The State of Israel is the only Western state where the majority of lands are still owned by the State and by a public body related to it (The Jewish National Fund). At the root lies the divine command stating that the Land of Israel belongs to God and therefore should not be traded in perpetuity (Leviticus 25). This principle has been applied to almost all of the State lands, and was established in a Basic Law. Since the 1980s there were many pressures in Israel to privatize at least part of the State's and JNF's lands, due to the general privatization process of Israel's economy, the deepening globalization process, and the transformation of Israel to an individualistic society. However, only a small portion of the lands were privatized, constituting 4% of the area of Israel. The book is based wholly on primary sources. It describes and analyzes the history of the ideological, social and legal processes that took place and their development since the beginning of the 20th century until today - processes that brought about the unique phenomenon of the State of Israel as an advanced capitalistic state whose lands are mostly state-owned.
