The Royal Marines in Russia, 1919

fc61cf638f72a706ec6ce51f1fe7e20b.webp

The Royal Marines in Russia, 1919: Battling the Bolsheviks During the Intervention by Alastair Grant
English | June 10, 2024 | ISBN: 1399038761 | 224 pages | PDF | 14 Mb
At the height of the Russian Civil War in 1919 Britain poured in thousands of troops and vast amounts of munitions to assist the White Russian opponents of Lenin's Communist forces. This was despite exhaustion following the Great War and the Spanish flu epidemic.

One man involved was 23-year-old Royal Marines officer, Thomas Henry Jameson. His mission took him and his men on a journey of 5,000 miles from Vladivostok to the battlegrounds not far from Moscow. As part of a White Russian Flotilla they steamed down the huge Kama River and fought a series of successful battles against superior Bolshevik gunboats. Later they were forced to retreat and, becoming cut off behind enemy lines, had to fight their way out knowing that, if captured, they faced summary execution. Eventually after a long and hazardous journey they made it back to their parent ship.
Jameson and his Marines faced a multitude of hazards in this cruel civil war including disease which he described as 'the biggest challenge of all." In some other British units there were reports of mutiny due to terrible conditions. Yet, as this fascinating book describes, remarkably he succeeded not only to keep his men alive but inflict significant damage on a ruthless enemy.

The Shetland Way Community and climate crisis on my father's islands

30053fa10fd634569d1c9b194a968588.webp

The Shetland Way: Community and climate crisis on my father's islands by Marianne Brown
English | 16 Jan. 2025 | ISBN: 0008596158 | True EPUB | 336 pages | 3.7 MB
A memoir and investigation exploring loss, community and the climate crisis in the Shetland Islands by environmental journalist Marianne Brown.

'The Shetland Way offers a fascinating insight into a unique place that holds past and future in uneasy tension, written with clarity and rooted in deep affection - not only for the islands but for the broader land and elements on which we all depend' THE OBSERVER
How do we balance our needs with the needs of the natural world around us?How can we have nuanced conversations and debate in a time of extreme activism or extreme denial? How can we begin to understand the complexities of a subject as enormous as climate change? And how can we change the way we live to save our lives?
This is one woman's story of how her quest to make peace with her father's death brought her straight to the heart of a challenging debate about how we save the planet.
When Marianne Brown arrived in Voe, Shetland, to attend the funeral of her father, she had packed enough clothes to last a short trip. But this was February 2020, just weeks before the UK's first lockdown, and she would be unable to leave for another six months.
Shetland is a place bound together by community, history and culture. But when a huge windfarm is greenlit to export energy to mainland Scotland, it creates rifts between neighbours, friends and even families. One side supports the benefit to a planet spiralling into climate disaster; the other challenges the impact on an environment with an already struggling wildlife population.
As an environmental journalist, Marianne is drawn to investigate this story of sustainable energy that is irrevocably tied to her grief. But nothing is ever straightforward, and she soon finds herself on a transformative journey into the heart of a debate that mirrors global concerns about how we save the planet.

The Silencing of Jesuit Figurist Joseph de Prémare in Eighteenth-Century China

289710afd1f66b20305afc731f3c6a50.webp

D. E. Mungello author of The Great Encounter of China and the West 1500-1800, "The Silencing of Jesuit Figurist Joseph de Prémare in Eighteenth-Century China"
English | ISBN: 1498595669 | 2023 | 153 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The image of a voice in the wilderness evokes an outcast who has been condemned and banished by society. That image fits the scholar-priest Joseph de Prémare who spent the last thirty-eight years of his life (1698-1736) mainly in remote areas of China. He was condemned to silence by not only his religious superiors, but also by intellectuals in Europe. He was silenced because his Figurist theories were regarded as dangerous and implausible. And yet the irony of this silencing is that Father Prémare was one of the most knowledgeable Sinologists of all time. As a missionary in towns in the southern province of Jiangxi, he was freed from many pastoral duties by an assisting catechist and able to devote himself to intensive study of Chinese texts. He was practically a scholar-hermit who left the urban, politicized atmosphere of Beijing after only two years to return to Jiangxi province. There he cultivated Chinese literati who helped him assemble a remarkable collection of classical texts. He was prolific in producing a wide body of works in philology, history, philosophy, religion and drama.

Faced by critics who were claiming that Chinese culture was alien to Christianity, Prémare joined the effort led by his fellow Jesuit Joachim Bouvet to save the Christian mission in China from destruction. The Figurists were radical in arguing that the ancient Chinese texts, like the Old Testament, anticipated the coming of Christ long before his birth. They claimed that Chinese commentators erred in viewing these ancient texts as records of history when in fact they were works of metaphorical and figurative meaning. Influenced by a Chinese scholar, Prémare made a philological analysis of Chinese characters to explain his theory. When Figurism was condemned by his religious superiors, Prémare attempted to circumvent their prohibition by sending his manuscripts to the proto-Sinologist Etienne Fourmont in Paris, asking that they be published anonymously. Fourmont criticized Prémare's theories and failed to publish them. By the time of his death, Prémare had sent most of his manuscripts to Paris where they remained buried for many years.

The Sinful Maternal Motherhood in Possession Films

91868735b105af93c9971c34d6b7153b.webp

The Sinful Maternal: Motherhood in Possession Films
by Lauren Rocha
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1496851730 | 193 Pages | PDF | 2.36 MB

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery are challenging experiences that impact women's physical, mental, and emotional health in ways that have been historically minimalized, dismissed, or neglected. A mother's body becomes a public body, physically and politically not her own, instead shared by her spouse, her children, and those around her. Her body, therefore, makes the perfect vessel for an invasive presence-or possession. The Sinful Maternal: Motherhood in Possession Films examines the role of mothers and motherhood in ten possession films, including Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Babadook, and Hereditary. Chapters discuss the work of such directors as James Wan, Jennifer Kent, Robert Eggers, and Ari Aster to address how their cinematic approaches to these films produce rich possession narratives that explore different facets of motherhood and women's agency.
Working at the intersections of gender studies, architectural theory, trauma studies, and monster theory, with a particular focus on the treatment of (often unruly) female bodies, author Lauren Rocha investigates the ways in which motherhood is a fertile state for possession and how possession acts to influence, destabilize, and reshape identity and the self. Placing the films in chronological order, she closely analyzes the ways in which sociocultural influences create different roles women and mothers are expected to perform. Ultimately, Rocha demonstrates how possession offers a way to challenge performative motherhood to free the self.

The Slave in Legal and Political Philosophy

1e44753cceb96ac04ae995d9f15a5fcb.webp

Tom Frost, "The Slave in Legal and Political Philosophy"
English | ISBN: 1032301279 | 2025 | 276 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book explores how the figure of the slave has been used to construct ideas of freedom in Western political and legal philosophy.

The figure of the slave has supported philosophical and legal defences of colonialism, coloniality and the supremacy of the white subject. Yet for Giorgio Agamben, the slave stands (almost counterintuitively) as an exemplar of a potential form of future positive political existence. Developing this line of thought, the book reads key thinkers Agamben engages with in his thought and writings - including Aristotle, Saint Paul and G W F Hegel - and draws on decolonial theory to argue that the lives of people who were enslaved and unfree, and their actions and gestures, can point towards a paradigmatic form of political belonging. By reading Agamben in a decolonial direction, we can imagine alternative forms of agency, recognition and subjectivity, which can challenge the necropolitical world of racial capitalism in which we live.

The Soviet Battle for Berlin, 1945

The Soviet Battle for Berlin, 1945
by Ian Baxter

English | January 16, 2025 | ISBN: 1636244386 | 128 Pages | True epub | 43,05 MB

A fully illustrated account of the Red Army's fierce April 1945 offensive meant to encircle and assault Berlin amidst desperate German resistance.
In the spring of 1945, simultaneously with the battle of the Seelow Heights, powerful Red Army spearheads launched three sub-offensive operations to clear German resistance for the Berlin operation. Between April 13 and 17, 1945, elements of the 2nd Belorussian Front replaced parts of the 1st Belorussian Front and began to prepare their offensive operations. Bitter fighting ensued, as German units desperately tried to hold their positions. Whilst these operations continued with unabated ferocity, Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front broke through the final line of the Seelow Heights and nothing but broken German formations lay between them and Berlin.
On April 20, Hitler's 56th birthday, Soviet artillery of the 1st Belorussian Front began shelling Berlin in preparation for attacking the city. At the same time the 1st Belorussian Front advanced towards the east and northeast of the Reich capital, whilst the 1st Ukrainian Front smashed through the last formations of the northern wing of the German Army Group Center. What followed was the Soviet battle for Berlin. Russian planners divided the frontal and pincer parts of the battle for Berlin in phases. Once the 1st Belorussian Front and 1st Ukrainian Front completely encircled the city, over one million Russian soldiers began attacking into the suburbs towards the center. They faced some 45,000 soldiers in several severely depleted Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS divisions. These divisions were supplemented by the Berlin Police force, and the Hitlerjugend and Volkssturm, mainly manned by teenaged boys.

Lynette H. Ong, "The Street and the Ballot Box "
English | ISBN: 1009158309 | 2022 | 84 pages | PDF | 10 MB
How do discontented masses and opposition elites work together to engineer a change in electoral authoritarian regimes? Social movements and elections are often seen as operating in different terrains - outside and inside institutions, respectively. In this Element, I develop a theory to describe how a broad-based social movement that champions a grievance shared by a wide segment of the population can build alliances across society and opposition elites that, despite the rules of the game rigged against them, vote the incumbents out of power. The broad-based nature of the movement also contributes to the cohesion of the opposition alliance, and elite defection, which are often crucial for regime change. This Element examines the 2018 Malaysian election and a range of cases from other authoritarian regimes across Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa to illustrate these arguments.

The Terrorism Ahead Confronting Transnational Violence in the Twenty-First Century

e3243fd614eac867b4b5f9be9370bff7.webp

Paul J. Smith, "The Terrorism Ahead: Confronting Transnational Violence in the Twenty-First Century"
English | 2007 | pages: 273 | ISBN: 0765619873, 0765619881 | PDF | 1,7 mb
This book examines the evolving threat of terrorism and draws on the latest research to assess future trends. The author assumes that terrorism will remain a potent threat to the international system throughout the twenty-first century, primarily because of the convergence of two negative trends: the availability of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Weapons (CBRN) - also known as Weapons of Mass Destruction - and the proliferation of terrorist organizations seeking to achieve mass casualties. Even without the CBRN element, however, Smith maintains that terrorism will remain an ongoing threat. The book also explores specific aspects of contemporary terrorism, including political, social, economic, religious, and ideological factors, globalization as a stimulation to contemporary terrorism, the role of organized crime in terrorist movements, and more. Written with students in college and professional programs in mind, the book includes case studies interspersed throughout the chapters that provide clarifying examples.

The Texture of Being Essays in First Philosophy

79c43b226e10146283acce9f8560ec98.webp

The Texture of Being: Essays in First Philosophy By Kenneth Schmitz, Paul O'Herron (editor)
2007 | 327 Pages | ISBN: 0813214688 | PDF | 1 MB
Kenneth Schmitz has spent an illustrious career as a philosopher striving to unite what Hegel called the "being of the ancients"―their deep engagement with metaphysics―to "the subjectivity of the moderns"―the modern concern with the interior life and historical particularity of human beings. Schmitz has sought to show how these concerns are two aspects of one "single philosophical life" which, far from being a pointless exercise, reflects an intellectually and spiritually fruitful human existence. In this volume, Schmitz brings his encyclopedic knowledge of the Western philosophical tradition to bear in a wide-ranging series of essays grouped under three headings: Being, Man, and God. He brings disparate philosophical traditions into conversation, such as classical Aristotelian-Thomistic metaphysics, the modern critical rationalism of Kant, the idealist synthesis of Hegel, the postmodern deconstructionism of Derrida and Foucault, and the personalist phenomenology of Scheler, Von Hildebrand, and Wojtyla. Schmitz explores re-situating classical metaphysics, with its confidence in the human ability to reach speculative truth, into a post-Enlightenment world that rejects the possibility, yet which values human interior richness. Schmitz believes, for instance, that we can have meaningful discourse about God's existence and about the role of beauty in helping us recognize that being is a gift received. Diverse in topics yet unified in purpose, this volume brings together Schmitz's penetrating and rich insight into being, produced over many years, to offer readers a magisterial study from one of the great Christian philosophers of our time.

The Trouble with Light (Miller Williams Poetry Prize)

49e17d6bfb3c6cdd9601ff6184f1095c.webp

The Trouble with Light (Miller Williams Poetry Prize) By Jeremy Michael Clark
2024 | 76 Pages | ISBN: 1682262499 | PDF | 1 MB
In The Trouble with Light, Jeremy Michael Clark reflects on the legacy of familial trauma as he delves into questions about belonging, survival, knowledge, and self-discovery in unflinching lyrical poems. "Like you," he writes, "I have . . . [a] history of / hardly caring for my body, of letting /whoever drink their share of me, / thinking it could cure / my fear of dirt." Whether ruminating on intimacy, lineage, identity, faith, or addiction, Clark's poems embody a restless, rigorous curiosity. Largely set in the poet's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, his portraits of interiority gracefully juxtapose the sorrows of alienation and self-neglect with the restorative power of human connection. In one of the most affectionate-and characteristically ambivalent-poems in the collection, Clark recalls, "For days, doubt struck as does lightning / across the span of night. . . . Love? If it exists, / it's the uncertainty one feels before a thunderclap, / after the sky's gone dark again." A vulnerable and transporting debut, The Trouble with Light is a vital record of how grief can endure, and how we can yet endure ourselves.

The Two Wings of Catholic Thought Essays on Fides et Ratio

The Two Wings of Catholic Thought: Essays on Fides et Ratio By David Ruel Foster (editor), Joseph W. Koterski (editor)
2002 | 249 Pages | ISBN: 0813213029 | PDF | 1 MB
John Paul's choice to yoke faith and reason together in an encyclical on the twin sources of knowledge caught the world's attention. By stressing 'the two wings' of Catholic thought, the pope captures in the lively image of a soaring bird the same point that theologians like von Balthasar communicate by calling truth symphonic. The beauty of this symphony, like the flight of the bird, is even better appreciated when one has studied the component parts. Knowing the various components only increases our wonder when we hear the music or see the bird take flight. The purpose of this volume is to deepen the appreciation for the stereophonic approach to truth that the Holy Father recommends. The essays are in three sections: (1) doctrinal themes, (2) contemporary implications, and (3) historical aspects. In the first, Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., discusses the twentieth-century answers to a question that has long haunted Christians who felt the attraction of pagan philosophy: Can philosophy be Christian? Prudence Allen, R.S.M., and Joseph Koterski, S.J., then treat two philosophical topics that have been the most affected by centuries of contact with the Christian faith: the philosophy of the person and metaphysics. David Meconi, S.J., reflects on the Marian framework that is so typical of Pope John Paul II's thought. In the second section, Bishop Allen Vigneron considers the significance of this encyclical for Catholic intellectual life today. David Foster discusses the implications of Fides et ratio for Catholic universities. In the final section, Koterski reviews the importance of biblical wisdom literature for the encyclical. Michael Sweeney and Timothy Quinn treat medieval philosophy and modern philosophy respectively. Finally Cardinal Dulles considers the Church pronouncements on faith and reason from Vatican I to John Paul II.

The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits, Sexuality, and Humanity in Modern India (South Asia in Motion) by Shailaja Paik
English | October 25, 2022 | ISBN: 1503634086 | 422 pages | MOBI | 16 Mb
This book offers the first social and intellectual history of Dalit performance of Tamasha-a popular form of public, secular, traveling theater in Maharashtra-and places Dalit Tamasha women who represented the desire and disgust of the patriarchal society at the heart of modernization in twentieth century India. Drawing on ethnographies, films, and untapped archival materials, Shailaja Paik illuminates how Tamasha was produced and shaped through conflicts over caste, gender, sexuality, and culture. Dalit performers, activists, and leaders negotiated the violence and stigma in Tamasha as they struggled to claim manuski (human dignity) and transform themselves from ashlil (vulgar) to assli (authentic) and manus (human beings). Building on and departing from the Ambedkar-centered historiography and movement-focused approach of Dalit studies, Paik examines the ordinary and everydayness in Dalit lives. Ultimately, she demonstrates how the choices that communities make about culture speak to much larger questions about inclusion, inequality, and structures of violence of caste within Indian society, and opens up new approaches for the transformative potential of Dalit politics and the global history of gender, sexuality, and the human.

The Welfare of Cats

The Welfare of Cats by Irene Rochlitz
English | PDF | 2007 | 297 Pages | ISBN : 1402032269 | 16.6 MB
Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, but particularly from those in developed countries, who now have the knowledge and resources to be able to offer the best management systems for their farm animals, as well as potentially being able to offer plentiful resources for companion, zoo and laboratory animals. The increased attention given to farm animal welfare in the West derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of financial reward and efficiency has led to the development of intensive animal production systems, that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries. In developing countries human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that provision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human welfare. Welfare is usually provided for only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In reality, there are resources for all if they are properly husbanded in both developing and developed countries. The inequitable division of the world's riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and animals alike in all sectors of the world. Livestock are the world's biggest land user (FAO, 2002) and the population is increasing rapidly to meet the need of an expanding human population. Populations of farm animals managed by humans are therefore increasing worldwide, and there is the tendency to allocate fewer resources to each animal. Increased attention to welfare issues is just as evident for companion, laboratory, wild and zoo animals.

But, how do these various interpretations relate to each other? Sabrina Ramet, a veteran Yugoslav authority, reviews and analyzes more than 130 books dealing with the region that comprises the former Yugoslavia: Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Included among the reviews are books in English, German, Serbian/Croatian, and Italian, offering the English-speaking reader access to the principal ideas and theories first published in these languages. This ambitious work promises to be uniquely helpful to the specialist as well as the general reader seeking to understand the causes of the Yugoslav breakup.
