The Lighthouse

Keith McCloskey, "The Lighthouse"
English | ISBN: 0750953659 | 2014 | 232 pages | EPUB | 953 KB
What really happened to the mysteriously vanished lighthouse keepers of the Flannan Isles-a true story, evocative of The Shining

On December 26, 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with relief lighthouse men and fresh provisions. Staffed by three keepers, the lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for 10 days. Upon arrival, the superintendent, Robert Muirhead, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the surrounding island failed to show any sign of what happened to the keepers. The last entry in the lighthouse logbook had been made on December 15, and contained a number of strange and distressing entries that offered clues as to the mental state of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become "very quiet." When it was revealed that the men's oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, inevitable theories surrounding the keepers' fates were soon put forward. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder and suicide by the men themselves, and more esoteric explanations, as Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. This book explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion.

English | ISBN: 0750956410 | 2015 | 192 pages | EPUB | 1327 KB
From the Mayans to modern-day survivalists, a tongue-in-cheek look at the best and worst predictions of Armageddon

Whether it's a mighty battle between ancient gods, the Second Coming of a Biblical savior, or a pesky Millennial computer virus, we've always wondered how the world would end. And whether we'd be (un)lucky enough to see it. This book explores some of the theories about the end of days, looking from religion to science and everything in between. Some are silly enough to laugh at, others might scare you to death. Either way, you'll find the End is nigh; it's right between these pages.

The Lonelinesses of Modernity A Theory of Modernization as an Age of Isolation

The Lonelinesses of Modernity: A Theory of Modernization as an Age of Isolation by Denis Newiak
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 250 Pages | ISBN : 3658401435 | 2.3 MB

Modernity presents itself as an age of increasing social disintegration: secularization and rationalization, urbanization and globalization, individualization and digitalization make it difficult for communities today. Modernity comes with desirable promises that make it attractive, but it does not come free: Its price is escalating modern loneliness. Denis Newiak tells a cultural history of modernization that, from industrialization to the late-modern network society, produces ever new and harsher experiences of loneliness.

The Lost Queen: The Surprising Life of Catherine of Braganza―the Forgotten Queen Who Bridged Two Worlds by Sophie Shorland
English | October 1, 2024 | ISBN: 1639367268 | 352 pages | PDF | 28 Mb
*A Smithsonian Best History Book of 2024*

An enthralling and vivid portrait of Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II, that reveals her forgotten place in history.
A long-overlooked figure in history, Catherine has a crucial place in the history of the British Empire: she may have failed to produce an heir to the throne, but her marriage to Charles in 1662 marked a key turning point in Britain's imperial ascendancy, for part of her dowry was Bombay, Britain's first territory of the Indian subcontinent. Catherine also was highly influential in the worlds of fashion, Baroque art and music, and food and culture. She popularized tea drinking, bringing England's national drink into fashion for the first time. Her life was at the nexus of Old and New Worlds, war and exploration, frivolity, and scientific inquiry.
Noteworthy in its scope and approach to sources, The Lost Queen combines personal and political accounts, offering a lively portrait of Catherine's life, and the wider politics and explorations of her time.

The Me I Was Made to Be Helping Christian Parents Navigate the Identity Conversation

The Me I Was Made to Be: Helping Christian Parents Navigate the Identity Conversation by Christie Penner Worden, Meredith Anne Miller
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 1513814850 | 216 pages | PDF | 1.80 Mb
Your kids are talking about identity. Are you part of the conversation?

Today's kids and youth are talking about identity-and often very differently from the adults around them. How can we walk well with them through their questions about who they are and how they fit into the family of God? We must begin by telling a better gospel story, with an invitational posture that actually expects us to love God and love others.
In this engaging and disarming book that speaks to readers across the theological spectrum, author and children's ministry expert Christie Penner Worden invites grownups along to imagine a more Jesus-centered narrative for the sake of kids who are no longer buying what the church is selling, who do not feel safe, and who have not been welcomed into the conversation that adults are having withoutthem. The Me I Was Made to Beis the beginning of a conversation that offers a compelling story on identity rooted in a deeper understanding of the gospel-one that includes all image-bearers and extends Jesus' welcome to all our kids.

English | 2006 | pages: 209 | ISBN: 0415374693 | PDF | 3,5 mb
With contributors drawn from a broad range of disciplines, The Modern Period Room brings together a carefully selected collection of essays to consider the interiors of the modern era and their more recent reconstructions from a variety of different viewpoints.

Contributions from leading design historians, architects and curators of the history of the domestic interior in the UK engage with the issues and conventions surrounding the modern period room to expose the conflicting tensions that lie beneath the conceptual and physical strategy of the modern period room's representational technique. Exploring themes and examples by prestigious architects, such as Ernö Goldfinger, Truus Schroeder and Gerrit Rietveld, the authors reveal the specific coding of presented interior spaces.
This illustrated new take on the historiography of twentieth century show interiors enables historians and theorists of architecture, design and social history to investigate the contexts in which this representational device has been used.

The Muse of History The Ancient Greeks from the Enlightenment to the Present

6d940a11ac1a5943ce2501e34ebd3c65.webp

The Muse of History: The Ancient Greeks from the Enlightenment to the Present by Oswyn Murray
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0674297458 | 528 pages | MOBI | 9.14 Mb
A Times Literary Supplement Best Book of the Year

How the modern world understood the ancient Greeks and why they matter today.
"This majestic book by Oswyn Murray has been long and eagerly awaited...and its quality and scope exceed expectations." ―Edith Hall, BBC History Magazine
The study of ancient Greece has been central to Western conceptions of history since the Renaissance. The Muse of History traces the shifting patterns of this preoccupation in the last three centuries, in which successive generations have reinterpreted the Greeks in the light of their contemporary worlds. Thus, in the eighteenth century, the conflict between Athens and Sparta became a touchstone in the development of republicanism, and in the nineteenth, Athens came to represent the democratic ideal. Amid the ideological conflicts of the twentieth century, the Greeks were imagined in an age of suffering, inspiring defenses against nationalism, Nazism, communism, and capitalism.
Oswyn Murray draws powerful conclusions from this historiography, using the ever-changing narrative of ancient Greece to illuminate grand theories of human society. Analyzing the influence of historians and philosophers including Hegel, Burckhardt, Nietzsche, and Braudel, Murray also considers how coming generations might perceive the Greeks. Along the way, The Muse of History offers rare behind-the-scenes glimpses of figures who shaped the study of ancient Greece, some devotedly cited to this day and others forgotten. We sit in on a class with Arnaldo Momigliano; meet Moses Finley after his arrival in England; eavesdrop on Paul Veyne, Jean-Pierre Vernant, and Pierre Vidal-Naquet; and rediscover Michel Foucault.
A thrilling work that rewrites established scholarly traditions and locates important ideas in unexpected places, The Muse of History reminds us that the meaning of the past is always made in and for the present.

The New Modernist Novel Criticism and the Task of Reading

The New Modernist Novel: Criticism and the Task of Reading by Elizabeth Pender
English | September 30, 2024 | ISBN: 1474461484 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 0.5 MB
Reconsiders the historical connections between modernism and close reading and argues that new modernist fiction can bring with it new modes of reading

Brings close reading into the new modernist studiesConsiders the changing meanings of reading among contemporary critics of modernist fiction and among mid-century criticsOffers sustained readings of three new modernist novels: Djuna Barnes's Nightwood, John Rodker's Adolphe 1920, and Mina Loy's InselConsiders how these novels present their literary, cultural, and social contexts to close readingExtends the book's questions to Samuel Beckett's Comment c'est/How It Is and Jean Rhys's short stories
The new modernist studies have recognised a range of writers, many of whom are now receiving new attention in criticism and teaching. Yet if an older modernist studies was developed for a different, narrower selection of literary works, how can its tools be brought to this new, widened canon?
This book considers how close reading may change as the discipline's subjects of study change. The chapters ask first how modernism was being read around 1930 and at mid-century, and then what close reading might look like now for three new modernist novels - Djuna Barnes's Nightwood, John Rodker's Adolphe 1920, and Mina Loy's Insel. These novels tend to deflect strategies of reading that were interdependent with the establishment of a more familiar canon of modernist literature at mid-century. Reading this new modernist fiction closely offers a way to open up modernism to other voices.

The One Thing: Small Ideas, Big Outcomes, A Brighter Future for South Africa by Bruce Whitfield
English | 1 October 2024 | ISBN: 1770109447 | 360 pages | PDF | 2.42 Mb
If South Africa were a cat, it would be rapidly running out of its nine lives. In 2024, voters sent a clear signal to the fractured ANC that they had run out of patience. It lost its majority and was forced to enter a difficult multi-party coalition.

Broadcaster, author and public speaker Bruce Whitfield consistently looks for opportunity in times of uncertainty. The author of the 2020 bestseller The Upside of Down, and Genius (2022), now brings you The One Thing, which draws on his unparalleled access to a network of business leaders, founders and deep thinkers.
Bruce challenged his contributors to identify 'One Thing' that, if they were president for half an hour, they would order to be implemented so it could have a catalytic effect throughout the economy. You will hear from a host of people, including:Sean Summers, tasked with turning around Pick n Pay, on the first step he would take to turn around the country;Mining CEO Mike Teke on what he learned playing football on the fields of KwaThema, and how he would apply that to the country;Wits Chancellor Judy Dlamini on the power of education; andChair of the Businesswomen's Association Mandisa Nkwanyana about harnessing the power of women as a catalyst for change. You will also hear from those who inspire us to be more than we think we can be, such as maestro Ralf Schmitt, who took the raw talent of a group of children from Limpopo to the finals of America's Got Talent, plus a range of money managers, editors, CEOs, academics and founders of some of the country's most successful startups.
Bruce also challenges readers to define their 'One Thing' and yes, he offers his own 'One Thing', too. Probably the simplest and most achievable action of all, it requires just one behaviourial change.

The Open Society as an Enemy A critique of how free societies turned against thems...

The Open Society as an Enemy: A critique of how free societies turned against themselves
by J McKenzie Alexander
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1911712268 | 373 Pages | True ePUB | 3.38 MB

Nearly 80 years ago, Karl Popper gave a spirited philosophical defence of the Open Society in his two-volume work, The Open Society and Its Enemies. In this book, J. McKenzie Alexander argues that a new defence is urgently needed because, in the decades since the end of the Cold War, many of the values of the Open Society have come under threat once again. Populist agendas on both the left and right threaten to undermine fundamental principles that underpin liberal democracies, so that what were previously seen as virtues of the Open Society are now, by many people, seen as vices, dangers, or threats.
The Open Society as an Enemy interrogates four interconnected aspects of the Open Society: cosmopolitanism, transparency, the free exchange of ideas, and communitarianism. Each of these is analysed in depth, drawing out the implications for contemporary social questions such as the free movement of people, the erosion of privacy, no-platforming, and the increased political and social polarisation that is fuelled by social media.
In re-examining the consequences for all of us of these attacks on free societies, Alexander calls for resistance to the forces of reaction. But he also calls for the concept of the Open Society to be rehabilitated and advanced. In doing this, he argues, there is an opportunity to rethink the kind of society we want to create, and to ensure it is achievable and sustainable. This forensic defence of the core principles of the Open Society is an essential read for anyone wishing to understand some of the powerful social currents that have engulfed public debates in recent years, and what to do about them.

The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick

The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick by David Haven Blake
English | November 29, 2024 | ISBN: 0197780512 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 3 MB
The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick offers the first book-length study of how physical disability shapes one of the world's most iconic novels. For generations, readers have viewed Captain Ahab's whalebone leg as a symbol of what he lacks, the limb he lost while fighting the white whale off the coast of Japan. David Haven Blake considers that ivory leg in a historical, medical, and geo-political context. Drawing on extensive archival research, he situates Ahab's prosthesis at the center of the novel's reflections on wounding, embodiment, and the role that Islamic cultures play in American narratives of revenge.

Melville had a lifelong fascination with dismemberment. From the use of assistive devices to the phenomenon of phantom limbs, he keenly imagined the experience of disability on ship. Blake connects the novel's interest in prostheses with its use of Islamic imagery to characterize overwhelming power. In this radically new analysis, he identifies the character Fedallah as the captain's most important prosthesis in piloting the captain to his final battle with Moby Dick. A key to understanding both Ahab and Ishmael, Fedallah emerges as the crutch upon which this novel of dismemberment leans.
Engagingly written and spanning each stage of Melville's career, The Prosthetic Arts of Moby-Dick is an eye-opening meditation on democracy, aggrievement, and the challenges of living in a global age.

The Psychology of Success How Mindset, Habits, and Resilience Drive Achievement

The Psychology of Success: How Mindset, Habits, and Resilience Drive Achievement by Oluchi Ike
English | August 20, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DDSV8D5B | 87 pages | EPUB | 1.32 Mb
Success is often viewed as a product of hard work, intelligence, and opportunity. While these factors undoubtedly play a role, they are only part of the equation. The true foundation of success lies within the mind-the way we think, the habits we cultivate, and the resilience we demonstrate in the face of challenges.

In writing this book, I aim to explore the psychology behind success. What separates those who achieve their goals from those who fall short? How can a shift in mindset transform our approach to life and work? What role do daily habits play in creating lasting change? And how does resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, fuel our journey toward success?

Mark Simmons, "The Rebecca Code: Rommel's Spy in North Africa and Operation Kondor"
English | ISBN: 0752468707 | 2012 | 192 pages | MOBI | 3 MB
John Eppler thought himself to be the perfect spy. Born to German parents, he grew up in Egypt, adopted by a wealthy family and was educated in Europe. Fluent in German, English and Arabic, he made the Hadj to Mecca but was more at home in high society or travelling the desert on camelback with his adopted Bedouin tribe. After joining the German Secret Service in 1937, in 1942 he was sent across the desert to Cairo by Field Marshal Rommel. His guide was the explorer and Hungarian aristocrat Laszlo Almasy, a man made famous by the book The English Patient. Eppler's mission was to infiltrate British Army Headquarters and discover the Eighth Army's troop movements and battle plans. In The Rebecca Code, Mark Simmons reveals the story of Operation Condor and its comedy of errors and how it was foiled by Major A.W. 'Sammy' Sansom of the British Field Security Service. It is a tale of the desert, of the hotbed of intrigue that was 1940s Cairo, and the spy who was to send his reports using a code based on Daphne du Maurier's novel Rebecca.

The Return of the Vikings The Battle of Maldon 991

Donald Scragg, "The Return of the Vikings: The Battle of Maldon 991"
English | ISBN: 0752428330 | 2006 | 192 pages | EPUB | 705 KB
On a day in August, 1,000 years ago, a fleet of some 90 viking ships sailed into the estuary of the Blackwater river in Essex. Fresh from the ravage of Ipswich, under the command (almost certainly) of the king of Denmark, they were intent no doubt on the rich spoils to be had from the royal Mint at Maldon. Facing them on the shore was Byrhtnoth, the second nobleman of the realm, with an army drawn from the households of the region. The ensuing fight was terrible in its ferocity. Byrhtnoth and many of his companions were slain, and eventually the vikings triumphed. Their victory marked the collapse of effective armed resistance to the Danes, and presaged the end of Anglo-Saxon England.

The Secret Queen Eleanor Talbot, the Woman Who Put Richard III on the Throne

John Ashdown-Hill, "The Secret Queen: Eleanor Talbot, the Woman Who Put Richard III on the Throne"
English | ISBN: 075096846X | 2016 | 352 pages | EPUB | 13 MB
When Edward IV died in 1483, the Yorkist succession was called into question by doubts about the legitimacy of his sons (the 'Princes in the Tower'). The crown therefore passed to Edward IV's undoubtedly legitimate younger brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester. But Richard, too, found himself entangled in the web of uncertainly, since those who believed in the legitimacy of Edward IV's children viewed Richard III's own accession with suspicion.

From the day that Edward IV married Eleanor, or pretended to do so, the House of York, previously so secure in its bloodline, confronted a contentious and uncertain future. John Ashdown-Hill argues that Eleanor Talbot was married to Edward IV, and that therefore Edward's subsequent union with Elizabeth Widville was bigamous, making her children illegitimate.
