Dirk Kasler, "Sociology Responds to Fascism"
English | ISBN: 1138009229 | 2015 | 272 pages | EPUB | 434 KB
We know a lot about the sociology of fascism, but how have sociologists responded to fascism when confronted with it in their own lives? How courageous or compromising have they been? And why has this history been shrouded in silence for so long? In this major work of historical scholarship sociologists from around the world describe and evaluate the reactions of sociologists to the rise and practice of fascism.

Sociology through the Projector

Bulent Diken, "Sociology through the Projector "
English | ISBN: 0415445981 | 2007 | 160 pages | EPUB | 278 KB
Sociology through the Projector takes issue with the question of how contemporary film can help answering the general, abstract but still urgent question: what is the social today? This book explains the performative relation to contemporary social theory in which cinema functions as a tool for social diagnosis.

There is much to be learned about social theory through an encounter with films as films are part and parcel of the society they portray. Increasingly more lay knowledge about social problems and facts stems from cinema as it offers to large audiences a popular and pedagogical introduction to social knowledge. Social theory cannot avoid a critical engagement with cinema as cinema interprets, invents, displaces and distorts the object of sociological inquiry.

Socionics Scalability of Complex Social Systems

Socionics: Scalability of Complex Social Systems By Klaus Fischer, Michael Florian (auth.), Klaus Fischer, Michael Florian, Thomas Malsch (eds.)
2005 | 315 Pages | ISBN: 3540307079 | PDF | 3 MB
This book includes contributions from an interdisciplinary field of research we call Socionics. Based on a close cooperation between sociologists and researchers from distributed artificial intelligence and multiagent systems, Socionics deals with the exploration of the emergence and dynamics of artificial social systems, agent societies, as well as hybrid man-machine societies. The aim is both to develop intelligent computer technologies by picking up theoretical concepts and methods from sociology and to improve sociological models of societies and organizations by using advanced computer technology. The 15 articles in this state-of-the-art survey combine selected contributions from sociology and informatics on the modeling, construction, and study of complex social systems with special regard to the problem of scaling multiagent systems. The discussion focuses on four specific research areas: multi-layer modeling, organization and self-organization, emergence of social structures, and paths from an agent-centered to a communication-centered perspective in modeling multiagent systems.

Sofia Coppola The Politics of Visual Pleasure

Anna Backman Rogers, "Sofia Coppola: The Politics of Visual Pleasure"
English | ISBN: 1785339753 | 2018 | 200 pages | PDF | 1103 KB
A feminist study of the mood, texture, tone, and multifaceted meaning of director Sofia Coppola's aesthetic through her most influential and well-known films.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2019
"With this book Rogers has produced a sophisticated and impassioned analysis of Coppola's work... Rogers's main argument - that Coppola manipulates pleasurable images to unsettle rather than mollify us - is utterly convincing. If nothing else, this certainly hits home in relation to my own enchantment with Coppola's work."―Bright Lights Film Journal
All too often, the movies of Sofia Coppola have been dismissed as "all style, no substance." But such an easy caricature, as this engaging and accessible survey of Coppola's oeuvre demonstrates, fundamentally misconstrues what are rich, ambiguous, meaningful films.

Software Composition: 4th International Workshop, SC 2005, Edinburgh, UK, April 9, 2005. Revised Selected Papers By Oscar Nierstrasz, Alexandre Bergel, Marcus Denker, Stéphane Ducasse, Markus Gälli (auth.), Thomas Gschwind, Uwe Aßmann, Oscar Nierstrasz (eds.)
2005 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 3540287485 | PDF | 2 MB
Component-based software development is the next step after object-oriented programmingthatpromisesto reducecomplexityandimprovereusability. These advantages have also been identi?ed by the industry, and consequently, over the past years, a large number of component-based techniques and processes have been adopted in many of these organizations. A visible result of this is the number ofcomponentmodels thathavebeendevelopedandstandardized. These models de?ne how individual software components interact with each other and simplify the design process of software systems by allowing developers to choose from previously existing components. The development of component models is a ?rst step in the right direction, but there are many challenges that cannot be solved by the development of a new component model alone. Such challengesare the adaptation of components, and their development and veri?cation. Software Composition is the premiere workshop to advance the research in component-based software engineering and its related ?elds. SC 2005 was the fourth workshop in this series. As in previous years, SC 2005 was organized as an event co-located with the ETAPS conference. This year's program consisted of a keynote on the revival of dynamic l- guages given by Prof. Oscar Nierstrasz and 13 technical paper presentations (9 full and 4 short papers). The technical papers were carefully selected from a total of 41 submitted papers. Each paper was thoroughly peer reviewed by at leastthreemembers oftheprogramcommittee andconsensusonacceptancewas achieved by means of an electronic PC discussion. This LNCS volume contains the revised versions of the papers presented at SC 2005.

Solidarity in the Media and Public Contention over Refugees in Europe

e222949b385124d1ad8db088a9e4285f.webp

Manlio Cinalli, "Solidarity in the Media and Public Contention over Refugees in Europe "
English | ISBN: 0367419955 | 2021 | 208 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book examines the 'European refugee crisis', offering an in-depth comparative analysis of how public attitudes towards refugees and humanitarian dispositions are shaped by political news coverage.

An international team of authors address the role of the media in contesting solidarity towards refugees from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Focusing on the public sphere, the book follows the assumption that solidarity is a social value, political concept and legal principle that is discursively constructed in public contentions. The analysis refers systematically and comparatively to eight European countries, namely, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Treatment of data is also original in the way it deals with variations of public spheres by combining a news media claims-making analysis with a social media reception analysis. In particular, the book highlights the prominent role of the mass media in shaping national and transnational solidarity, while exploring the readiness of the mass media to extend thick conceptions of solidarity to non-members. It proposes a research design for the comparative analysis of online news reception and considers the innovative potential of this method in relation to established public opinion research.

Solitary Alone We Are Nothing

062ae0c7d8f506084a448a5f2688f267.webp

Gladys Ambort, "Solitary: Alone We Are Nothing"
English | ISBN: 190997661X | 2018 | 198 pages | EPUB | 1393 KB
As a young student and activist for a different social order, Gladys Ambort fell victim to political repression in the Argentina of the 1970s. Denounced by her college professor, she was incarcerated for three years, during part of which she underwent solitary confinement in a small, isolated cell. Solitary is her account of this era of her life, including her battles with alienation, truth, reality and uncertainty. She also describes the 'nothingness' to which her captors reduced her, which lingered for decades as she rebuilt her life in exile - sounding a warning to others: 'Never again'.

Extract: 'The fear caused by nothingness makes sanity explode. The threat of nothingness dominates us. It is stronger than any will, any intention. Nothing subverts our decisions more easily than the impossibility of resisting the threat of nothingness. There is no determination to oppose it, no mental structure against it, no human theory that can withstand it'.
(Chapter XXV).

Solution Protocols to Festering Island Disputes 'Win-Win' Solutions for the Diaoyu...

Godfrey Baldacchino, "Solution Protocols to Festering Island Disputes: 'Win-Win' Solutions for the Diaoyu / Senkaku Islands"
English | ISBN: 0367218771 | 2019 | 224 pages | EPUB | 868 KB
Since the coming into force of the United Nations Law of the Sea, states have been targeting outlying islands to expand their exclusive economic zones, simultaneously stirring up strident nationalism when such plans clash with those of neighbouring states. No such actions have brought the world closer to the brink of war than the ongoing face-off between China and Japan over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands, an uninhabited archipelago in the East China Sea.

In this timely and original book, Godfrey Baldacchino provides a detailed exploration of seven tried and tested solution protocols that have led to innovative 'win-win' solutions to island disputes over the last four centuries. A closer look at the circumstances and processes that brought contending regional powers to an honourable, even mutually advantageous, settlement over islands provides a convincing and original argument as to why the conflict over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands need not conclude in a 'zero-sum' or 'winner takes all' solution, as is the likely outcome of both open conflict and international arbitration.

Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture

Satoshi Higuchi, "Somaesthetics and the Philosophy of Culture "
English | ISBN: 0367443430 | 2021 | 156 pages | EPUB | 999 KB
"I regard Higuchi's book as particularly valuable because it highlights dimensions of somaesthetics that have not been sufficiently explored. I refer not only to the various traditional Japanese somatic disciplines whose somaesthetics aspects Higuchi reveals, but also to central topics far beyond Japanese culture."

-Foreword by Richard Shusterman
Higuchi, one of the pivotal scholars in introducing Shusterman's somaesthetics to Japanese audiences in the early 2000s, provides insight into how this philosophy has developed in Japan, and the affinity it has developed with a non-Western culture.
Dividing his insights into the categories of innovation, practice, and educational implications, Higuchi presents the Japanese perspective on somaesthetics, with contributions from four of his students. They develop the philosophical discussion of areas such as the aesthetics of sport, bodily knowing, learning as mimesis, and learning culture through language. In this way, the book illuminates the philosophy of somaesthetics using Japanese experience and research while presenting a unique perspective on Japanese culture.

Space and Society in Central Brazil

Elizabeth Ewart, "Space and Society in Central Brazil "
English | ISBN: 0857857266 | 2013 | 304 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Hailed once as 'giants of the Amazon', Panará people emerged onto a world stage in the early 1970s. What followed is a remarkable story of socio-demographic collapse, loss of territory, and subsequent recovery. Reduced to just 79 survivors in 1976, Panará people have gone on to recover and reclaim a part of their original lands in an extraordinary process of cultural and social revival. Space and Society in Central Brazil is a unique ethnographic account, in which analytical approaches to social organisation are brought into dialogue with Panará social categories and values as told in their own terms. Exploring concepts such as space, material goods, and ideas about enemies, this book examines how social categories transform in time and reveals the ways in which Panará people themselves produce their identities in constant dialogue with the forms of alterity that surround them. Clearly and accessibly written, this book will appeal to students, scholars and anyone interested in the complex lives and histories of indigenous Amazonian societies.

Paul Routledge, "Space Invaders: Radical Geographies of Protest "
English | ISBN: 0745336299 | 2017 | 176 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Under conditions of increasing global economic inequalities, we are witnessing the flourishing of grassroots people's movements fighting for improved livelihoods. Whether it's the flurry of Occupy protests that peppered the planet a few years ago or the current wave of anti-austerity mobilizations, there is a consistent geographical logic to all forms of protest. In Space Invaders, Paul Routledge draws upon his extensive experiences over the past thirty years working with various forms of protest in Europe, Asia, and Latin America to provide an account of how a radical geographical imagination can inform our understanding of social processes.

Florian Köhler, "Space, Place and Identity: Wodaabe of Niger in the 21st Century "
English | ISBN: 1789206367 | 2020 | 246 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Known as highly mobile cattle nomads, the Wodaabe in Niger are today increasingly engaged in a transformation process towards a more diversified livelihood based primarily on agro-pastoralism and urban work migration. This book examines recent transformations in spatial patterns, notably in the context of urban migration and in processes of sedentarization in rural proto-villages. The book analyses the consequences that the recent change entails for social group formation and collective identification, and how this impacts integration into wider society amid the structures of the modern nation state.

Spaces of CapitalSpaces of Resistance Mexico and the Global Political Economy

Chris Hesketh, "Spaces of Capital/Spaces of Resistance: Mexico and the Global Political Economy "
English | ISBN: 0820352845 | 2017 | 240 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Based on original fieldwork in Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico, this book offers a bridge between geography and historical sociology. Chris Hesketh examines the production of space within the global political economy. Drawing on multiple disciplines, Hesketh's discussion of state formation in Mexico takes us beyond the national level to explore the interplay between global, regional, national, and sub-national articulations of power. These are linked through the novel deployment of Antonio Gramsci's concept of passive revolution, understood as the state-led institution or expansion of capitalism that prevents the meaningful participation of the subaltern classes.

Furthermore, the author brings attention to the conflicts involved in the production of space, placing particular emphasis on indigenous communities and movements and their creation of counterspaces of resistance. Hesketh argues that indigenous movements are now the leading social force of popular mobilization in Latin America. The author reveals how the wider global context of uneven and combined development frames these specific indigenous struggles, and he explores the scales at which they must now seek to articulate themselves.

Spaces of Contention Spatialities and Social Movements

6254157ea6f537db39f2cb11f881cf9f.webp

Byron Miller, "Spaces of Contention: Spatialities and Social Movements"
English | ISBN: 0754677788 | 2013 | 320 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
As social movements have become more complex, geographers are increasingly studying the spatial dynamics of collective resistance and sociologists and political scientists increasingly analyzing the role of space, place and scale in contentious political activity. Occupying a position at the intersection of these disciplinary developments, this book brings together leading scholars to examine how social movements have employed spatial practices to respond to and shape changing social and political contexts. It is organised into three main sections: (1) Place, Space and Mobility: sites of mobilization and regulation, (2) Scale and Territory: structuring collective interests, identities, and resources, and (3) Networks: connecting actors and resources across space. It concludes by suggesting that different spatialities (place, scale, networks) interlink within one another in particular instances of collective action, playing distinctive yet complementary roles in shaping how these actions unfold in the political arena. By mapping state of the art conceptual and empirical terrain across Geography, Sociology, and Political Science, 'Spaces of Contention' provides readers with a much needed guide to innovative research on the spatial constitution of social movements and how social movements tactically and strategically approach and produce space.

Spaces of Political Pedagogy Occupy! and other radical experiments in adult learning

Cassie Earl, "Spaces of Political Pedagogy: Occupy! and other radical experiments in adult learning"
English | ISBN: 036788724X | 2019 | 196 pages | EPUB | 784 KB
This book examines three sites of pedagogical innovation, all of which are explicitly activisms against the current political and pedagogical climate. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework including autonomous Marxism, post-anarchism, social movement theories and theories of critical pedagogy, it examines social movements though a pedagogical lens and attempts to understand how connections can be made between social movement learning and other initiatives and forms of higher learning. With studies of the London Occupy! movement; The Social Science Centre, a co-operative higher learning provider that practises popular education in city venues; and a university politically opposing the 'student as consumer' ethos, Spaces of Political Pedagogy connects these various projects as a continuum of educational experimentation, offering insights into the ways in which these sites practice pedagogy and the manner in which these practices could be implemented more widely to inform and improve struggles for wider social justice. As such, it will appeal to scholars of education and sociology with interests in pedagogy, social movements and activism.

Spacious Minds Trauma and Resilience in Tibetan Buddhism

5bc5c760120304a437d9c2471a4b2888.webp

Sara E. Lewis, "Spacious Minds: Trauma and Resilience in Tibetan Buddhism"
English | ISBN: 1501715356 | 2020 | 252 pages | EPUB | 1519 KB
Spacious Minds argues that resilience is not a mere absence of suffering. Sara E. Lewis's research reveals how those who cope most gracefully may indeed experience deep pain and loss. Looking at the Tibetan diaspora, she challenges perspectives that liken resilience to the hardiness of physical materials, suggesting people should "bounce back" from adversity. More broadly, this ethnography calls into question the tendency to use trauma as an organizing principle for all studies of conflict where suffering is understood as an individual problem rooted in psychiatric illness.

Beyond simply articulating the ways that Tibetan categories of distress are different from biomedical ones, Spacious Minds shows how Tibetan Buddhism frames new possibilities for understanding resilience. Here, the social and religious landscape encourages those exposed to violence to see past events as impermanent and illusory, where debriefing, working-through, or processing past events only solidifies suffering and may even cause illness. Resilience in Dharamsala is understood as

Samuel Amago, "Spanish Cinema in the Global Context: Film on Film "
English | ISBN: 0415854253 | 2013 | 214 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Across a broad spectrum of media, markets, and national contexts, self-reflexivity continues to be a favored narrative mode with wide ranging functions. In this book Amago argues that, in addition to making visible industry and production concerns within the film text, reflexive aesthetics have a cartographic function that serves to map the place of a film (geographic and cultural) within the global cinemascape, and thus to bring into sharper relief images of the national. Focusing on films in the contemporary Spanish context that in some way reflect back on themselves and the processes of their own production, that purposefully blur the distinction between reality and fiction, or that draw attention to the various modes of cinematic exhibition and reception, Amago proposes ways in which these movies can be employed to understand Spanish national cinemas today as imbedded within a dynamic global system.

Paul Julian Smith, "Spanish Lessons: Cinema and Television in Contemporary Spain"
English | ISBN: 1785331086 | 2017 | 176 pages | PDF | 830 KB
Though unjustly neglected by English-language audiences, Spanish film and television not only represent a remarkably influential and vibrant cultural industry; they are also a fertile site of innovation in the production of "transmedia" works that bridge narrative forms. In Spanish Lessons, Paul Julian Smith provides an engaging exploration of visual culture in an era of collapsing genre boundaries, accelerating technological change, and political-economic tumult. Whether generating new insights into the work of key figures like Pedro Almodóvar, comparing media depictions of Spain's economic woes, or giving long-overdue critical attention to quality television series, Smith's book is a consistently lively and accessible cultural investigation.
