th The 14 International Conference on Conceptual Structures (ICCS 2006) was held in Aalborg, Denmark during July 16 - 21, 2006. At the same time, we also focused on ways in which these legacies are employed to further advance theory and practice in the field of knowledge representation and processing. Today, examples of the public's engagement with political issues through commercial and communicative mechanisms have become increasingly common. In February 2012, the Susan G. Komen Foundation reversed a decision to cease funding of cancer screening programs through Planned Parenthood amidst massive public disapproval. The same year, restaurant chain Chic-fil-A became embroiled in a massive public debate over statements its President made regarding same-sex marriage. What exactly is going on in such public engagement, and how does this relate to existing ideas regarding the public sphere and political participation? Is the public becoming increasingly vocal in its complaints? Or are new relationships between the public and economic and political leaders emerging?

Timothy Kersey's book asserts that the widespread utilization of internet communications technologies, especially social media applications, has brought forth a variety of new communicative behaviors and relationships within liberal polities. Through quick and seemingly chaotic streams of networked communication, the actions of these elites are subject to increasingly intense scrutiny and short-term pressure to ameliorate or at least address the concerns of segments of the population. By examining these new patterns of behavior among both elites and the general public, Kersey unearths the implications of these patterns for contemporary democratic theory, and argues that contemporary conceptualizations of "the public'" need to be modified to more accurately reflect practices of online communication and participation.
By engaging with this topical issue, Kersey is able to closely examine the self-organization of both elite and non-elite segments of the population within the realm of networked communication, and the relations and interactions between these segments. His book combines perspectives from political theory and communication studies and so will be widely relevant across both disciplines.

The political, economic, and social problems of Central America during the past four years have at times threatened to escalate into a generalized conflict. Intense diplomatic efforts to find peaceful solutions to the crisis, however, have met with only limited success. Negotiations have collapsed amid bitter accusations of intransigence or bad faith, and some have taken place outside of public scrutiny, resulting in widespread confusion that has surrounded the entire peace process. This book is an effort by the Central American and Caribbean Program at the School of Advanced International Studies to shed light on the crucial roles of the Contadora Group (Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela) in forging peace in the region. Containing a collection of nearly one hundred statements, declarations, proposals, resolutions, draft treaties, and official documents, it easily constitutes the most comprehensive reference work on the search for peace in Central America. In order to improve readability, slight adjustments have been made to some of the documents.

Contadora―the Central American peace negotiations launched on Contadora Island by Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama in 1983― has been the focus of heated polemics in the United States and abroad. Contadora's supporters contend that it represents the only viable alternative to deepening conflict in Central America, which could ultimately produce a direct U.S. military intervention in Nicaragua. Critics of Contadora view the initiative as a collection of unverifiable and unenforceable proposals that could pave the way for the consolidation of a Soviet-Cuban presence and legitimize a Communist regime on the mainland of the Americas, thus irreparably damaging U.S. security interests. The first of these two volumes examines the evolution of U.S. policy toward Central America and Contadora during the first half of the 1980s in an effort to clarify the nature of the debate over the Contadora process and its potential contributions to regional peace. The contributors define U.S. security interests in Central America and analyze the internal dynamics of the Contadora negotiations as well as Contadora¾ “fit†with U.S. interests and policies in the region.
