The Wendish Crusade of 1147, one of the Northern Crusades and a part of the Second Crusade, took place at a critical phase in the evolution of crusading rhetoric. The initiators and apologists of the campaign employed rhetorical devices to justify the occupation of a region and conversion of a population under the auspices of a crusade. A detailed examination of the primary sources shows that the justification of a crusade against apostates was not only a German endeavour, or the pope's will, but a political reality of the twelfth century. Therefore, the attitude of the papacy is shown to be reactive rather than proactive.

It pioneered the mode of operation now common for satellite observatories, in which data is taken and calibrated by technicians and provided to researchers ready for analysis. It has been a major source of discovery in, among other areas, research on neutral hy drogen and studies of dark matter in galaxies.

Recent years have witnessed a continued and growing interest in relativistic quantum chemical methods and the associated computa tional algorithms which facilitate their application. This interest is fu elled by the need to develop robust, yet efficient theoretical approaches, together with efficient algorithms, which can be applied to atoms in the lower part of the Periodic Table and, more particularly, molecules and molecular entities containing such atoms. Such relativistic theories and computational algorithms are an essential ingredient for the description of heavy element chemistry, becoming even more important in the case of superheavy elements. They are destined to become an indispensable tool in the quantum chemist's armoury. Indeed, since relativity influences the structure of every atom in the Periodic Table, relativistic molecular structure methods may replace in many applications the non-relativistic techniques widely used in contemporary research.

This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Die Grundlagen der Elektrodynamik und Speziellen Relativitätstheorie werden in systematischer Weise eingeführt. Es wird konsequent das Internationale Einheitensystem verwendet, um mit den Lehrbüchern der Experimental- und Schulphysik kompatibel zu sein.Wichtige physikalische Begriffsbildungen werden ausführlich diskutiert und mit einer Vielzahl von Abbildungen illustriert: beispielsweise das Konzept des elektrischen Feldes und die Unterscheidung zwischen Fern- und Nahwirkung, die Rolle der Felder E und B sowie D und H oder die Bedeutung des Verschiebungsstroms. Querverbindungen zur Quantentheorie sind die Eichinvarianz und der Aharonov-Bohm-Effekt.In der Relativitätstheorie werden folgende Themen behandelt: Inertialsysteme, Lorentz-Transformation, Zeitdilatation und Zwillingsparadoxon (mit Beispielen), Addition von Geschwindigkeiten, relativistische Masse und Energie, Doppler-Effekt, Vierervektoren, Anwendungen in der Beschleuniger- und Elementarteilchenphysik. Die enge Verknüpfung der elektromagnetischen Erscheinungen mit der Relativitätstheorie wird herausgearbeitet. Besonders wichtig ist die Erkenntnis, dass die Lorentz-Kraft als relativistische Ergänzung der Coulomb-Kraft gedeutet werden kann.Im letzten Kapitel wird ein Ausblick auf die Dirac-Gleichung gegeben als relativistische Verallgemeinerung der Schrödinger-Gleichung. Die fundamentalen neuen Vorhersagen werden diskutiert: Existenz der Antiteilchen, Spin 1/2 und anomales magnetisches Moment des Elektrons.
