Lexicarry Pictures for Learning Languages (Pro Lingua's Color)

2ecc56f01c373df57d8279cb62b80454.webp

Lexicarry: Pictures for Learning Languages (Pro Lingua's Color) by Patrick R Moran
English | January 12, 2015 | ISBN: 0866473718 | 146 pages | MOBI | 21 Mb
A one-of-a-kind picture dictionary, Lexicarry offers a fun, active, conversational approach to language learning. It is a book of wordless pictures designed to help learners build vocabulary and conversation skills in any second language using the American English word list in the book, a bilingual dictionary, one of the Lexicarry word lists, and/or someone who knows the language. There are 13 foreign language word lists available at ProLinguaLearning.com to use with this book for learners of languages other than English.

The book has 142 pages of full-color drawings illustrating functional language and vocabulary in 190 situational and topical contexts. This amounts to over 4500 everyday words and expressions. The pictures make conversation and interactive learning easy.
Although learners can use Lexicarry working on their own, they learn best by discussing the objects, places, and activities in the drawings, working together in pairs, as a class, or with a tutor or native speakers. The illustrations are not labeled, and this naturally challenges and excites students' imaginations and helps them retain the language.
There are seven sections to the book: 1) Functions, 2) Sequences of Actions, 3) Related Actions, 4) Operations, 5) Topics (vocabulary items related to one theme), 6) Places (scenes/ rooms and the things we find and do there), and 7) Proverbs and Sayings.

Life-Span Maintenance of Knowledge

ce0600cb5430b4840e77a298e8a34b7d.webp

Harry P. Bahrick, "Life-Span Maintenance of Knowledge "
English | ISBN: 1848726503 | 2013 | 328 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This volume describes how well we maintain the knowledge we acquire throughout life. Research traditionally focuses on memory for events that are retained over short time periods that can be accommodated in experiments. This book, by contrast, uniquely describes the evolution of methods suitable for investigating memory of complex knowledge acquired over several years and retained during the entire life-span. The methods substitute statistical for experimental controls, and the investigations involve several hundred participants whose memory is tested up to 50 years after they acquired the knowledge in question.

The book covers educational content, such as mathematics and foreign languages; knowledge acquired incidentally, such as the streets and buildings of the cities in which we live; and knowledge acquired through the media. Previously unpublished research on age-related access to knowledge is included.

Light on Tantra in Kashmir Shaivism Chapter One of Abhinavagupta's Tantraloka

8830275d22a6aa2f798974e00613bb90.webp

John Hughes, "Light on Tantra in Kashmir Shaivism: Chapter One of Abhinavagupta's Tantraloka"
English | 2017 | pages: 478 | ISBN: 194724101X, 1947241001 | EPUB | 5,8 mb
This profound text is concerned with the philosophy and practice known as Kashmir Shaivism. On account of its size and scope it is a veritable encyclopedia of non-dual Shaivism. Why was the Tantraloka written? In answer to this question Abhinavagupta tells us that, although in the schools of Kashmir Shaivism there are many wonderful and important ways and methods for attaining the supreme reality, yet in his time not even one was still existing. All of those ways and methods were lost. It is for this reason that he was requested by his colleagues and disciples to create a text that would illuminate and clarify all of these ways and methods of Kashmir Shaivism. To accomplish this, Abhinavagupta composed the Tantraloka, a text, which he tells us is filled with the complete explanation of the ways and methods associated with Kashmir Shaivism. That is to say that the philosophical understanding on the level of the intellect might have been existing, but the actual practical means or methods to be used to attain the supreme reality - oneness with Universal Being - to which they all pointed was lost. Abhinavagupta was intent, therefore, to revive the true understanding of these very important teachings, to make the practices that they embodied live again. For what is the use of a map if you have no way to reach the destination? Thus, Abhinavagupta gave us the Tantraloka to remedy this situation. The Tantraloka is composed of thirty seven chapters (ahnikas). Each chapter has it's own distinct topic. In this present volume - chapter one - Abhinavagupta lays the groundwork for the rest of his Tantraloka. Here are some of the topics Abhinavagupta examines in the first chapter:* The important Masters of the schools of Kashmir Shaivism. * The differentiated perception of all the means and methods (upayas). * The difference between knowledge, ignorance and liberation. * The essence of what is to be recognized, i.e., the real object to be known. * The oneness of Shiva and His energy (Shakti). * Introduction to the means and methods (upaya) for attaining full and pure knowledge where you perceive your nature as one with the universe. * True liberation in Kashmir Shaivism. * A discussion of the four states of means (upayas).* Three variations of absorption or trance (samavesha) as mentioned in the Malinivijaya Tantra. * The contents of each of the thirty seven chapters of Tantraloka.

Joy White, "Like Lockdown Never Happened: Music and Culture During Covid"
English | ISBN: 1914420098 | 2024 | 160 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Analyses how Black music and culture framed how we passed the time in the first 18 months of the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, music listening increased as people used it to help to counter the psychological fallout of lockdown and reduce its effects of isolation, restriction and boredom. At the same time, concerts and other musical events moved online, and even when lockdown eased, social distancing meant that group musical and cultural events took on a different format.
With a focus on contemporary Black music, this book takes a deep dive into a few of the various forms that popular culture took over this period, including Kano's Newham Talks series; Steve McQueen's BBC anthology

Local Government and Governance in Germany Challenges, Responses and Perspectives

d8930a675e429d040199671784c2ac2e.webp

Local Government and Governance in Germany: Challenges, Responses and Perspectives
by Hellmut Wollmann
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031683536 | 180 Pages | True PDF | 6.27 MB

The book aims at outlining key political, functional, administrative and financial features of Germany's local government system and at placing them in a (European) comparative perspective. In pursuing an "institutionalist" approach it focuses on discussing whether, how and why the position and activities of local government in the intergovernmental ("multi-level") setting have changed vis-à-vis multiple challenges and crises. Among the latter tasks such as coping with the energy crisis, the influx of asylum seekers and refugees, the digitization of local administration and the Covid19 pandemic loom large.
Ranking among the functionally and politically strongest among European countries Germany's local government plays an important role in the German federal system and beyond in the European Union. Over the years it has proved a remarkable problem solving and innovative capacity. Hence, the German case may attract the attention of a European and international audience interested in local government and governance and practices.

Johanna Hays, "Louise Blanchard Bethune: America's First Female Professional Architect"
English | ISBN: 0786476761 | 2014 | 256 pages | EPUB | 7 MB

Beyond setting standards for public schools, she was the go-to architect for factories, warehouses, police stations, a Nikola Tesla power transfer station, and the largest luxury hotel of the early 1900s. Bethune moved from a small town on the Erie Canal-the economic and technological marvel of the antebellum period-to a rapidly industrializing major American city, following the urban migration of many Americans. Unlike many women of her day she seized the promise of the growing nation to pursue life, liberty, and happiness in an occupation of her choice and succeeded.
