Moon Charania, "Will the Real Pakistani Woman Please Stand Up?: Empire, Visual Culture and the Brown Female Body"
English | ISBN: 0786499990 | 2015 | 160 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
This series of absorbing case studies focuses on the portrayal of Pakistani women in the global media. Analyzing Hollywood films, British documentaries, newspapers and mainstream U.S. magazines, the book traces sensational female figures of Pakistan-all of whom have been subject to patriarchal violence-highlighting the imagery of exploitation and eroticism. The author addresses questions of spectatorship and fetishism in the age of globalization and the racial and imperial politics of liberal feminism.

They had more in common than just a scream, whether they faced Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, King Kong, the Wolf Man, or any of the other legendary Hollywood monsters. Some were even monsters themselves, such as Elsa Lanchester as the Bride, and Gloria Holden as Dracula's Daughter. And while evading the Strangler of the Swamp, former Miss America Rosemary La Planche is allowed to rescue her leading man. This book provides details about the lives and careers of 21 of these cinematic leading ladies, femmes fatales, monsters, and misfits, putting into perspective their contributions to the films and folklore of Hollywood terror-and also the sexual harassment, exploitation, and genuine danger they faced on the job.

Writing Madness, Writing Normalcy Self and Stigma in Memoirs of Mental Illness

Lisa Spieker, "Writing Madness, Writing Normalcy: Self and Stigma in Memoirs of Mental Illness"
English | ISBN: 1476682275 | 2021 | 243 pages | EPUB, PDF | 3 MB + 13 MB
What does it mean to be "mad" in contemporary American society? How do we categorize people's reactions to extreme pressures, trauma, loneliness and serious mental illness? Importantly-who gets to determine these classifications, and why?

This book seeks to answer these questions through studying an increasingly popular media genre-memoirs of people with mental illnesses. Memoirs, like the ones examined in this book, often respond to stigmatizing tropes about "the mad" in popular culture and engage with concepts in mental health activism and research. This study breaks new academic ground and argues that the featured texts rethink the possibilities of community building and stigma politics. Drawing on literary analysis and sociological concepts, it understands these memoirs as complex, at times even contradictory, approaches to activism.

WW2 Codebreaking People and Places A Wartime Glossary

f43d71cae649614bf0daabd052a08310.webp

WW2 Codebreaking People and Places
by Ronald Koorm;

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1399053493 | 258 pages | True PDF EPUB | 17.5 MB

An easily understandable account and listing, of those involved in collecting and analysing military intelligence, principally during the second world war.
WW2 Codebreaking People and Places is the first volume of a series on a glossary of codebreaking, 'People and Places', brings to the reader an easily understandable account and listing, of those involved in collecting and analysing military intelligence, principally during the second world war. Whilst some will be well known, such as Alan Turing, many others have made significant contributions to codebreaking but fail to attract the attention of the media for the most part. From an individual named 'Wren' who worked at a codebreaking outstation supporting Bletchley Park, to a mathematician who modified a codebreaking machine just prior to D-Day, to a ladies foundationwear factory in Hertfordshire that helped make machine components, these people and places now can be appreciated as to where they fitted-in within the overall picture of gathering, and processing enemy intelligence in wartime.
The entries are cross-referenced to enable the reader to research as much or as little as they want, to dip-in to the glossary, to use it as a basis for further study, or just to learn a little more about the people that helped us win the war with our allied friends. .

X3 to X54 The History of the British Midget Submarine

4982331150a1435b1415e43ca11617cd.webp

X3 to X54: The History of the British Midget Submarine by Keith Hall
English | December 7, 2023 | ISBN: 1803991992 | 192 pages | PDF | 32 Mb
The X Class submarines were conceived during WW2, small craft of around 51ft (16m) long, designed to be towed by a 'mother' submarine with a passage crew on board. Their midget size meant they could attack with stealth, and return to their towing submarine. Beginning with a look back over the wartime craft, this new study from ex-submariner Keith Hall charts the evolution of the X class subs, from X3 through X and XE, and onto the 1950s short-lived and unique Stickleback class. Only four Stickleback submarines were ever produced, with grand plans to use them to carry a 15-kiloton nuclear naval mine codenamed Cudgel deep into Soviet harbours. Nearly all scrapped, just one remains, an X51 now residing in the Scottish Submarine Centre in Helensburgh. With a wealth of imagery including archive X craft photographs as well as up-to-date views of the X51 Stickleback from the Helensburgh Museum, this book tells the little-known story of Britain's midget class subs.

A Human Being Died That Night A South African Woman Confronts the Legacy of Apartheid

A Human Being Died That Night: A South African Woman Confronts the Legacy of Apartheid by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela
English | June 25, 2024 (2004) | ISBN: 9780063432659, 0618211896, 0618446591 | True EPUB | 205 pages | 0.6 MB
"The story of an almost unimaginable dialogue...an exploration of evil, innocence, and the gray spaces in between."-New York Times

"A startlingly personal account...written with clarity, energy, and enormous empathy"-Washington Post
Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, internationally reknowned for her understanding of violent histories and transgenerational trauma, recounts an extraordinary dialogue. As her book opens, in an act of inescapable symbolism and psychological courage, she enters Pretoria's maximum security prison to meet Eugene de Kock, called "Prime Evil" for his role as killing machine for South Africa's Apartheid regime. What follows is a journey into what it means to be human.
In arresting scenes, Gobodo-Madikizela, who grew up in a Black township during apartheid South Africa, conveys her struggle with contradictory impulses to hold de Kock accountable and to forgive. Ultimately, she allows us to witness his extraordinary awakening of conscience.
The author's profound understanding of the language and memory of violence, and of the searingly complex issues surrounding apology and forgiveness after mass atrocity, have left a mark on international scholarship and on our emotional lives.

A Streetcar to Subduction and Other Plate Tectonic Trips by Public Transport in San Francisco By
2013 | 87 Pages | ISBN: 0875902340 | PDF | 3 MB
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. It is hard to be unaware of the earth in San Francisco. Built on rocky hills, the city is surrounded on three sides by bay and ocean that can be seen from nearly everywhere within it. Precipitous cliffs face the city from across the Golden Gate, and the skyline to the north, east, and south is dominated by mountains. Occasional tremors from the San Andreas and related faults nearby remind us that the earth here is active. Until recently the rocks so abundantly exposed in San Francisco baffled geologists. Jumbled together without apparent order and lacking visible fossils, they defied explanation. The theory of plate tectonics has changed all that. We now have an explanation for the origin of the rocks of San Francisco, although it is anything but simple.Content: Chapter 1 Trip 1. A Streetcar to Subduction (pages 10-17): Chapter 2 Trip 2.
