This study brings a new perspective to a pivotal debate: the causes of the English Revolution. It pinpoints the economic motives behind the opposition to the crown, and shows their connection to the changing mind-set and political transitions of the time. Distinctively, it identifies the radicalism of the mercantile sphere, and the developing claim of "freedom of trade," the basis on which parliament challenged the king's fiscal prerogative. Freedom of trade was associated with rights of consent, which were asserted as a guarantee of economic interests, and as a political principle. This informed the constitutional changes pushed through by parliament early in 1641, establishing freedom of trade by parliamentary control of the customs, and giving the assembly an automatic place at the center of affairs, the first requirement of representative government. Crucially, it was not the crown but parliament that appropriated the state interest, through an independent definition of national priorities. As England coalesced into a political and commercial unit, the open and communal patterns of medieval times were overlaid. The land itself came to be perceived and used in a different way. Freedom of trade had an agrarian aspect. An extended class of gentry and yeomanry occupied consolidated farms, displacing the smallholders from the common lands. With intensified marketing, the old moral restraints on trade and property died away. A more exploitative ethic undermined the balance of relationship with the land. The book makes an original connection between the English Revolution and the processes of environmental change.

By analyzing and ultimately refuting each of the proposed underpinnings of liberalism―liberty, equality, rights, privacy, autonomy, or dignity―Safranek concludes that contemporary liberalism is a myth: it is not a coherent political philosophy as much as a collection of causes masked by emotively potent political rhetoric.

Safranek marshals thorough evidence to make the case that each of the allegedly fundamental liberal principles amount to the right to do as one desires. As a result, liberalism's proponents must offer some method or principle to mediate the inevitable conflict of desires. In fact, all liberal scholars invoke some form of John Stuart Mill's harm principle to proscribe unacceptable desires. But this leads to self-contradiction: because all acknowledge that harm can be psychological as well as physical, anyone suffers harm when his act is legally prohibited, as this denies him the object of his desires (liberty) for the sake of another's desires. Therefore any right advanced in the name of liberty contradicts that very principle.
While finding inherent flaws in liberal justifications for personal liberty, including rights to same-sex marriage, abortion, and assisted- suicide, Safranek reveals the consequences of the contemporary liberal disdain for morality as a basis for law and constitutional rights. The Naxalites take their name from an uprising of workers in the tea gardens of the north Bengal countryside, near Naxalbari, in early 1967. Since then 'Naxalite' and 'Naxalism' have become synonymous in India with communist revolutionary 'terrorism'.

The Naxalite movement itself, and most specifically its distinct ideology, has never been as closely and comprehensively studied as in the present book. Rabindra Ray argues that any true interpretation of Naxalism must come to grips with what it meant to be a Naxalite, and with what the practice of Naxalism meant to the participants themselves. In order to do this he distinguishes between, on one hand, the ideological statements and documents produced by the Naxalite leadership (their 'literate ideology') and, on the other, their activity and the significance of their actions (their 'existential ideology').
The Naxalites are seen, further, within the contexts of Bengali society, the varieties of Indian party communism, and the Indian peasantry and urban middle classes. The author also relates Naxalite ideology to Nietzsche and the European philosophical tradition of nihilism, as well as outlines the social and cultural heritage of Naxalism.
This third edition includes a new Afterword that explores the trajectory of communist movement in India till current times. The author examines the ideological conflict that the movement faces as well as its relevance to India today.
