Incombustible Lutheran Books in Early Modern Germany

995bcfa15566a28156bef4701392d8aa.webp

Avner Shamir, "Incombustible Lutheran Books in Early Modern Germany "
English | ISBN: 0367151200 | 2019 | 204 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
This book discusses the early modern engagement with books that survived intentional or accidental fire in Lutheran Germany. From the 1620s until the middle of the eighteenth century, unburnt books became an attraction for princes, ✅Publishers, clergymen, and some laymen. To cope with an event that seemed counter-intuitive and possibly supernatural, contemporaries preserved these books, narrated their survival, and discussed their significance. This book demonstrates how early modern Europeans, no longer bound to traditional medieval religion, yet not accustomed to modern scientific ways of thinking, engaged with a natural phenomenon that was not uncommon and yet seemed to defy common sense.

India in the Italian Renaissance Visions of a Contemporary Pagan World 1300-1600

Meera Juncu, "India in the Italian Renaissance: Visions of a Contemporary Pagan World 1300-1600 "
English | ISBN: 1138860824 | 2015 | 262 pages | EPUB, PDF | 7 MB + 3 MB
India in the Italian Renaissance provides a systematic, chronological survey of early Italian representations of India and Indians from the late medieval period to the end of the 16th century, and their resonance within the cultural context of Renaissance Italy. The study focuses in particular on Italian attitudes towards the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent and questions how Renaissance Italians, schooled in the admiration of classical antiquity, responded to the challenge of this contemporary pagan world.

Meera Juncu draws from a wide-ranging selection of contemporary travel literature to trace the development of Italian ideas about Indians both before and after Vasco Da Gama's landing in Calicut. After an introduction to the key concepts and a survey of inherited notions about India, the works of a diverse range of writers and editors, including Marco Polo, Petrarch and Giovanni Battista Ramusio, are analysed in detail. Through its discussion of these texts, this book examines whether 'India' came in any way to represent a pagan civilization comparable to the classical antiquity celebrated in Italy during the Renaissance.

Individuality in Early Modern Japan

Peter Nosco, "Individuality in Early Modern Japan "
English | ISBN: 1138308781 | 2017 | 202 pages | EPUB | 8 MB
Two of the most commonly alleged features of Japanese society are its homogeneity and its encouragement of conformity, as represented by the saying that the nail that sticks up gets pounded. This volume's primary goal is to challenge these and a number of other long-standing assumptions regarding Tokugawa (1600-1868) society, and thereby to open a dialogue regarding the relationship between the Japan of two centuries ago and the present. The volume's central chapters concentrate on six aspects of Tokugawa society: the construction of individual identity, aggressive pursuit of self-interest, defiant practice of forbidden religious traditions, interest in self-cultivation and personal betterment, understandings of happiness and well-being, and embrace of "neglected" counter-ideological values. The author argues that when taken together, these point to far higher degrees of individuality in early modern Japan than has heretofore been acknowledged, and in an Afterword the author briefly examines how these indicators of individuality in early modern Japan are faring in contemporary Japan at the time of writing.

Virginia W. Berninger, "Interdisciplinary Frameworks for Schools: Best Professional Practices for Serving the Needs of All Students"
English | ISBN: 1433818086 | 2014 | 432 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This comprehensive, landmark guide presents an evidence-based approach to assessment and instruction in K-12 education that takes into account individual differences in students. The guide identifies the developmental skills to be assessed and taught in early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence, and it provides principles for tailoring assessment and intervention to individual students, who exhibit sizable developmental, individual, cultural, and language differences.

Importantly, it also explains how to facilitate communication and collaboration among interdisciplinary teams in education-professionals who are legally required to work together yet have such different training and disciplinary expertise that they seem to "speak different languages."

Japan's Defense Engagement in the Indo-Pacific Deterrence, Strategic Partnership, ...

7891a03b66df0bae67df759b8e6a808c.webp

Japan's Defense Engagement in the Indo-Pacific: Deterrence, Strategic Partnership, and Stable Order Building
by Nanae Baldauff
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031605780 | 217 Pages | True PDF | 6.1 MB

This original book systematically examines Japan's defense engagement with its strategic partners since the end of the Cold War based on Japan's national security strategy. The author maps three defense engagement activities: military exercises, capacity building, and defense equipment transfer and technology cooperation - and subsequently evaluates these against the three national security objectives: deterrence, cooperative security, and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision. The book asks two important research questions: why is Japan active in defense engagement with the armed forces of its strategic partners? And, what purposes do Japan's self-defense forces pursue? Through the ten carefully selected cases of strategic partners: Australia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, ASEAN, the UK, France, NATO, and the EU, the book follows a structured, cross-case comparison based on the analytical framework developed for the research. It also discusses the evolution of Japan's postwar defense policy, providing a solid background for the case studies. The book overall argues that, while the Japan-US alliance is still the most indispensable, Japan's strategic partnerships are a valuable instrument of deterrence that contributes to Japan's national security objectives. In order to more effectively pursue these objectives and thus secure the national interest, Japan must pursue a purpose-driven defense engagement.

Jet Combat in the Nuclear Age Jet Fighter Campaigns1980s to the Present Day

13cf486a2a62d78b3aa25bb1b15a2ff1.webp

Jet Combat in the Nuclear Age: Jet Fighter Campaigns?1980s to the Present Day by Martin W. Bowman
English | September 20, 2016 | ISBN: 1510708618 | 264 pages | PDF | 30 Mb
Follow the fighters of the strategic nuclear strike force.

In this book, the roles of jet fighters and fighter bombers in the Nuclear Age are explored. Bowman consolidates a range of firsthand accounts from the pilots themselves with a well-researched history of military aviation from the 1980s to today.
Jet Combat in the Nuclear Age pays tribute to the men and women of the USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) and their role in maintaining peace by deterring any perceived Soviet threat with a retaliatory nuclear attack. The 1980s also brought a new enemy in air operations in the Middle East when US Navy F-14 Tomcats and other jet aircraft mounted retaliatory operations against Libya.
The book spotlights military craft in action across the globe:
US Navy A-6E Intruders bombed Benghazi in 1986 in retaliation for the bombing of a West Berlin disco
F-111Fs and RAF Jaguars decimated Saddam Hussein's forces in the opening rounds of Desert Storm
Carrier-based craft deployed in support of military operations Joint Endeavor, Desert Strike, and Sharp Guard
Today the war against terror continues to rely on air power, with small teams of Special Forces troops directing attack aircraft against enemy positions. Jet Combat in the Nuclear Age outlines an era when victory comes from above.

Edward Clemmer, "Julian of Norwich in Her Phenomenology: Her Spiritual Texts and Their Historical Contexts"
English | ISBN: 1800799144 | 2023 | 600 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
You have done a magnificent study of Julian. The initial chapters are splendidly researched though I missed the Syon Abbey contribution. Then I loved your final chapters where the footnotes keep giving Julian's text. I especially applaud your seeing the Carmelite aspect which I don't think others have.

(Julia Bolton Holloway, Hermit of the Holy Family, Florence)
A new work on Julian of Norwich is always a cause for celebration and Dr Clemmer's book is no exception. The reader is enabled to follow Julian closely before, during and after her unique visionary experience, examining contemporary history and spirituality from many angles. And the story continues right up to Edith Stein in the twentieth century. This book will delight all Julian lovers, as well as others who want to know Julian better and appreciate her in greater depths.

Literacy, Education and Manuscript Transmission in Byzantium and Beyond

Catherine Holmes, "Literacy, Education and Manuscript Transmission in Byzantium and Beyond "
English | ISBN: 9004120963 | 2002 | 268 pages | PDF | 65 MB
The papers in this volumes consider literacy, education and manuscript transmission in Byzantium and its neighbouring worlds, areas which to date have received surprisingly little sustained scholarly treatment among Byzantinists. Contributions include an overview, survey papers and individual case studies, many of which draw on recently discovered or rarely consulted sources: literary sources include astrological texts, saints' lives and florilegia as well as documentary texts, art and archaeological evidence. The contributors' fields reflect the interdisciplinary scope of this volume, covering history, art history, literary studies and palaeography. The volume looks in detail at Byzantium, but also includes papers on Rus, the Middle East, and the Jewish contribution. The book's eastern perspectives offer interesting comparisons and contrasts with the medieval West. The book is illustrated with plates showing illuminated manuscripts and archaeological artefacts.

The contributors are Paul Botley, Simon Franklin, Catherine Holmes, Erica Hunter, John Lowden, Paul Magdalino, Margaret Mullett, Stefan Reif, Charlotte Roueche, Natalie Tchernetska, and Judith Waring.

Jacob F. Field, "London, Londoners and the Great Fire of 1666: Disaster and Recovery "
English | ISBN: 1138207144 | 2017 | 172 pages | EPUB, PDF | 2 MB + 2 MB
The Great Fire of 1666 was one of the greatest catastrophes to befall London in its long history. While its impact on London and its built environment has been studied and documented, its impact on Londoners has been overlooked. This book makes full and systematic use of the wealth of manuscript sources that illustrate social, economic and cultural change in seventeenth-century London to examine the impact of the Fire in terms of how individuals and communities reacted and responded to it, and to put the response to the Fire in the context of existing trends in early modern England. The book also explores the broader effects of the Fire in the rest of the country, as well as how the Great Fire continued to be an important polemical tool into the eighteenth century.

Marx (The Routledge Philosophers)

Marx (The Routledge Philosophers)
by Jaime Edwards, Brian Leiter
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1138938513 | 317 Pages | True PDF | 2.03 MB

The writings of Karl Marx (1818-1883) have left an indelible mark not only on the understanding of economics and political thought but on the lives of millions of people who lived in regimes that claimed (wrongly) his influence. Trained as a philosopher and steeped in the thought of Hegel, Marx turned away from Hegelian philosophy after 1845 towards a philosophy that incorporated economics and history. It is this Marx that endures and to which this outstanding introduction is devoted.
Jaime Edwards and Brian Leiter begin with an overview of Marx's life and intellectual development, including his early years as a journalist in Germany before his exile in London. They then introduce and assess the fundamental elements of Marx's thought:
Marx's theory of history and historical change (historical materialism)
class conflict, the state, and the Communist revolution
Marx's theory of economics, especially the labour theory of value, and his prediction of the collapse of capitalism
the nature and role of ideology in Marx's thought
Marx's theory of human nature and the good life, including his arguments concerning alienation
Marx's legacy and influence, including Western Marxism, the Frankfurt School, and "feminist Marxism".
Including annotated further reading suggestions at the end of each chapter and a glossary of technical terms, this is an indispensable introduction to Marx's philosophical thought. It will also be extremely useful to those in related disciplines such as politics, sociology, history, and political economy.
