Especialmente em 2012, houve um foco renovado nos maias, cujo calendário avançado levou muitos a especular que o mundo acabaria na mesma data em que o calendário maia termina. O foco no cenário do "dia do juízo final", no entanto, ofuscou a verdadeira contribuição dos maias para a astronomia, a língua, o desporto e a arte.

Ao contrário da maioria dos livros sagrados do mundo - o Alcorão, a Bíblia ou o I-Ching, por exemplo - ninguém conhece o nome universal, se é que alguma vez existiu, da coleção de mitos dos Maias. Em vez disso, o título que foi transmitido, o "Popol Vuh", parece ser o título específico dado a uma cópia particular destes contos. O seu significado, traduzido aproximadamente como "Livro do Conselho", refere-se ao papel especial deste texto: era propriedade partilhada do conselho de senhores que governava o reino de Quiché e, ao que parece, era regularmente consultado por esse órgão para obter conselhos que orientassem o seu governo.
No entanto, nas secções iniciais, os escribas que escreveram o texto também lhe dão vários outros nomes, incluindo "A luz que veio do lado do mar", "O nosso lugar nas sombras" e "A aurora da vida" (pág. 63). Todos estes nomes eram originalmente em K'ichean Maya, a língua falada pelos Mayas do Reino de Quiché e das regiões vizinhas. O primeiro destes nomes refere-se a uma peregrinação da segunda geração de senhores Quiché na Parte V à costa de Yucatan para adquirir uma cópia de pelo menos uma parte do texto original. O segundo se refere à Parte IV, o período antes do primeiro Amanhecer (as "Sombras"), quando os ancestrais quichés conquistaram seu direito particular de governar. O último nome refere-se à Parte I, quando os primeiros deuses criaram todas as partes da vida.
