Das System beruht vielmehr auf der Anwendung der richtigen Methode (paradigmatisch: die mathematische) und ist das notwendige Ergebnis methodischen Denkens. Dabei grenzt sich Wolff gegen die zur Zeit der Frühaufklärung hochgeschätzte Eklektik ab, wonach ein systematischer Philosoph nach eigenem freien Urteil aus früheren Lehren dasjenige auswähle, was wahr ist, und zu einem System verknüpfe. Wer richtig auswählen will, so Wolff, braucht jedoch einen Maßstab, um ein logisch kohärentes System überhaupt formulieren zu können. Dies ist die Voraussetzung für jeden Erkenntnisprozess und damit für wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt. Wolffs Systemidee, die er in seinen Werken vorführt und als Methode lehrte, erwies sich in der Folgezeit als enorm einflussreich und beendete schließlich die Karriere der Eklektik. Von Ausnahmen abgesehen wollte kein Philosoph mehr Eklektiker sein. Noch bei Kants Definition des Systems in der Kritik der reinen Vernunft steht ganz eindeutig Wolffs Systembegriff im Hintergrund.
