Remaking Wormsloe Plantation The Environmental History of a Lowcountry Landscape

e914e74580723415663e59df8f4b8222.webp

Drew a Swanson, "Remaking Wormsloe Plantation: The Environmental History of a Lowcountry Landscape"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0820341770, 0820347442 | EPUB | pages: 320 | 2.6 mb
Why do we preserve certain landscapes while developing others without restraint? Drew A. Swanson's in-depth look at Wormsloe plantation, located on the salt marshes outside of Savannah, Georgia, explores that question while revealing the broad historical forces that have shaped the lowcountry South.

Wormsloe is one of the most historic and ecologically significant stretches of the Georgia coast. It has remained in the hands of one family from 1736, when Georgia's Trustees granted it to Noble Jones, through the 1970s, when much of Wormsloe was ceded to Georgia for the creation of a state historic site. It has served as a guard post against aggression from Spanish Florida; a node in an emerging cotton economy connected to far-flung places like Lancashire and India; a retreat for pleasure and leisure; and a carefully maintained historic site and green space. Like many lowcountry places, Wormsloe is inextricably tied to regional, national, and global environments and is the product of transatlantic exchanges.
Swanson argues that while visitors to Wormsloe value what they perceive to be an "authentic," undisturbed place, this landscape is actually the product of aggressive management over generations. He also finds that Wormsloe is an ideal place to get at hidden stories, such as African American environmental and agricultural knowledge, conceptions of health and disease, the relationship between manual labor and views of nature, and the ties between historic preservation and natural resource conservation. Remaking Wormsloe Plantation connects this distinct Georgia place to the broader world, adding depth and nuance to the understanding of our own conceptions of nature and history.

Remembering Korea 1950 A Boy Soldier's Story

7f437457ae83b3b698ce2d7ebaa0eb00.webp

H. K. Shin, "Remembering Korea 1950: A Boy Soldier's Story"
English | 2001 | ISBN: 0874174821 | EPUB | pages: 176 | 1.2 mb
Hyung K. Shin was sixteen years old when the North Korean army invaded South Korea in June 1950. Fleeing his home, Shin soon found himself alone in Pusan, a refugee without resources or any means of support. To save himself from destitution, he lied about his age and volunteered for service in the South Korean army. Shin's account of the months that followed is a moving record of the Korean War from the perspective of an ordinary ROK soldier. He recounts his hasty training and subsequent experiences as a battlefield soldier in North Korea, as a guard in a prisoner-of-war camp, and as a refugee again in the massive flight of civilians and ROK military personnel retreating before the onslaught of the Chinese invasion. Through it all, Shin struggles to retain his humanity and pursue his education. In the process, the naïve schoolboy becomes a man. Today, Hyung K. Shin is an internationally respected chemist, but in the pages of this memoir he carries us back to Korea during a pivotal moment in that country's history. This is the first account in English that describes the war from the perspective of a Korean who lived through and fought in it. Shin's detailed and lively narrative is a stirring monument to the survival of human decency and kindness in the midst of terror, cruelty, despair, and the destruction of a proud nation.

Remembering Lived Lives A Historiography from the Underside of Modernity

cbd8e7feeba92d6ac45cc2496afbd0c6.webp

Michael Jimenez, "Remembering Lived Lives: A Historiography from the Underside of Modernity"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1498234852, 1498234879 | EPUB | pages: 182 | 0.3 mb
Remembering Lived Lives is a religious historiography book that focuses on issues and theorists located primarily in Latin America. Instead of joining the chorus of contemporary European intellectuals like Slavoj Zizek, who insist on a renewed Eurocentrism, this study challenges both historians and theologians to take seriously the work done by theorists located in what Enrique Dussel calls the underside of modernity. This is an interdisciplinary work that opens with Karl Barth's outline for historical-theological study and closes with an analysis of the film The Mission. Written for both the history or theology instructor and student, it deals with subjects like church history, biography as theology, liberation theology as primary source material, photographs, and historical movies.

Remembering Lucile A Virginia Family's Rise from Slavery and a Legacy Forged a Mil...

Polly E. Bugros McLean, "Remembering Lucile: A Virginia Family's Rise from Slavery and a Legacy Forged a Mile High"
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1646421957, 1607328240 | EPUB | pages: 333 | 2.0 mb
In 1918 Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Jones received her bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, becoming its first female African American graduate (though she was not allowed to "walk" at graduation, nor is she pictured in the 1918 CU yearbook). In Remembering Lucile, author Polly McLean depicts the rise of the African American middle class through the historical journey of Lucile and her family from slavery in northern Virginia to life in the American West, using their personal story as a lens through which to examine the greater experience of middle-class Blacks in the early twentieth century.

The first-born daughter of emancipated slaves, Lucile refused to be defined by the racist and sexist climate of her times, settling on a career path in teaching that required great courage in the face of pernicious Jim Crow laws. Embracing her sister's dream for higher education and W. E. B. Du Bois's ideology, she placed education and intelligence at the forefront of her life, teaching in places where she could most benefit African American students. Over her 105 years she was an eyewitness to spectacular, inspiring, and tragic moments in American history, including horrific lynchings and systemic racism in housing and business opportunities, as well as the success of women's suffrage and Black-owned businesses and educational institutions.
Remembering Lucile employs a unique blend of Black feminist historiography and wider discussions of race, gender, class, religion, politics, and education to illuminate major events in African American history and culture, as well as the history of the University of Colorado and its relationship to Black students and alumni, as it has evolved from institutional racism to welcoming acceptance. This extensive biography paints a vivid picture of a strong, extraordinary Black woman who witnessed an extraordinary time in America and rectifies her omission from CU's institutional history. The book fills an important gap in the literature of the history of Blacks in the Rocky Mountain region and will be of significance to anyone interested in American history.

Remembering Reconstruction Struggles over the Meaning of America's Most Turbulent Era

02bdacbc4c9cf3927cbf7a822a2163b2.webp

Carole Emberton, W. Fitzhugh Brundage, "Remembering Reconstruction: Struggles over the Meaning of America's Most Turbulent Era"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 0807166022 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 0.5 mb
Academic studies of the Civil War and historical memory abound, ensuring a deeper understanding of how the war's meaning has shifted over time and the implications of those changes for concepts of race, citizenship, and nationhood. The Reconstruction era, by contrast, has yet to receive similar attention from scholars. Remembering Reconstruction ably fills this void, assembling a prestigious lineup of Reconstruction historians to examine the competing social and historical memories of this pivotal and violent period in American history.

Many consider the period from 1863 (beginning with slave emancipation) to 1877 (when the last federal troops were withdrawn from South Carolina and Louisiana) an "unfinished revolution" for civil rights, racial-identity formation, and social reform. Despite the cataclysmic aftermath of the war, the memory of Reconstruction in American consciousness and its impact on the country's fraught history of identity, race, and reparation has been largely neglected. The essays in Remembering Reconstruction advance and broaden our perceptions of the complex revisions in the nation's collective memory. Notably, the authors uncover the impetus behind the creation of black counter-memories of Reconstruction and the narrative of the "tragic era" that dominated white memory of the period. Furthermore, by questioning how Americans have remembered Reconstruction and how those memories have shaped the nation's social and political history throughout the twentieth century, this volume places memory at the heart of historical inquiry.

Jim Ignasher, "Remembering Smithfield: Sketches of Apple Valley"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 1540234355, 1596296798 | EPUB | pages: 130 | 2.6 mb
The legend of John Noforce- whose puzzling death may have been the result of a Native American Romeo and Juliet saga- 1676's bloody Nipsachuck massacre and the scandalous downfall of the poor farm and asylum are a few of the tales that linger among historic Smithfield's fields and forests. Once home to 'Apple King' Thomas K. Winsor and Arthur C. Gould, frustrated inventor of Rhode Island's first and only aircraft rest stop, this storied town has known both triumph and tragedy. Local author Jim Ignasher's expertly woven collection of vignettes speaks to the ever-enduring spirit of Smithfield's people. From illegal ice cream peddlers to a mysterious traveler killed by his own pet rattlesnake, the roots of this vibrant community extend far beyond its celebrated apple orchards

Remembering the First World War

b7ccd9ba68e12a059013960e2f4d4e1f.webp

Bart Ziino, "Remembering the First World War"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0415856280 | EPUB | pages: 270 | 2.5 mb
Remembering the First World War brings together a group of international scholars to understand how and why the past quarter of a century has witnessed such an extraordinary increase in global popular and academic interest in the First World War, both as an event and in the ways it is remembered.

The book discusses this phenomenon across three key areas. The first section looks at family history, genealogy and the First World War, seeking to understand the power of family history in shaping and reshaping remembrance of the War at the smallest levels, as well as popular media and the continuing role of the state and its agencies. The second part discusses practices of remembering and the more public forms of representation and negotiation through film, literature, museums, monuments and heritage sites, focusing on agency in representing and remembering war. The third section covers the return of the War and the increasing determination among individuals to acknowledge and participate in public rituals of remembrance with their own contemporary politics. What, for instance, does it mean to wear a poppy on armistice/remembrance day? How do symbols like this operate today? These chapters will investigate these aspects through a series of case studies.
Placing remembrance of the First World War in its longer historical and broader transnational context and including illustrations and an afterword by Professor David Reynolds, this is the ideal book for all those interested in the history of the Great War and its aftermath.

Remembering the Way it Was at Hilton Head, Bluffton and Daufuskie

Fran Heyward Marscher, "Remembering the Way it Was at Hilton Head, Bluffton and Daufuskie"
English | 2005 | ISBN: 1596290617, 1540203808 | EPUB | pages: 192 | 2.3 mb
Discover the history of an era lost to generations in this collection of personal stories by author and Hilton Head resident Fran Heyward Marscher.

In the hundred years separating the Civil War and the 1950s, the Lowcountry was a world unto itself. The big plantations were gone, and for those remaining life had to be wrenched from the soil and the creeks. But for some, these isolated barrier islands offered heaven on earth: virgin maritime forest, pristine saltwater, sand roads and plentiful wild game. This fascinating collection of stories speaks to us of life in a simpler time, of raising hogs, guineas and children on abandoned plantations; growing sweet potatoes, okra and sugar cane; trapping mink and picking oysters; pulling 12-pound flounder and 79-pound drum from the creeks; making feasts of Loggerhead turtle eggs, crab and conch meat; picking musk; and taking the steamer to Savannah to see the ""big city"" lights. Our narrators were born between 1881 and 1941, and, though their stories overlap and intertwine, each has a unique perspective on life in the Lowcountry. Author Fran Heyward Marscher, a Hilton Head journalist, grew up hearing these precious memories and sought out the storytellers when she realized that the way of life they described was in danger of dying out with each generation. Günther Grewendorf, "Remnant Movement "
English | ISBN: 1614517460 | 2015 | 327 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book addresses two crucial problems associated with the phenomenon of Remnant Movement: First, what evidence can be brought to bear in favor of, or opposing, Remnant Movement analyses of linguistic phenomena? Secondly, what does the presence or absence of Remnant Movement in the syntax tell us about constraints imposed by Universal Grammar on syntactic operations?

Remote Sensing Image Processing Algorithms for Detecting Air Turbulence Patterns

344e5600e00d6e8d0c51989f31931129.webp

Remote Sensing Image Processing Algorithms for Detecting Air Turbulence Patterns by Maged Marghany
English | November 22, 2024 | ISBN: 103234458X | 364 pages | MOBI | 49 Mb
Injuries due to air turbulence has increased recently, therefore there is considerable concern and interest in understanding and detecting it more accurately. Presently hardly any research deals with air turbulence detection using remote sensing images. Most works use conventional optical remote sensing data with classical methods such as a library spectral signature, band ratio, and principal component analysis without designating new methods and technology. Very little research has attempted to implement optical and microwave remote sensing images for air turbulence detections.

This book provides new image processing procedures for air turbulence detection using advanced remote sensing images and quantum image processing. Currently, there is a huge gap between research work in the field of air turbulence detection and advanced remote sensing technology. Most of the theories are not operated in terms of software modules. Most of the software packages in the field of remote sensing images cannot deal with advanced image processing techniques in air turbulence detections due to heavy mathematics work. In this view, this book fills a gap between advanced remote sensing technology and air turbulence detection. For instance, quantum image processing with a new generation of remote sensing technology such as RADARSAT-2 SAR images is also implemented to provide accurate air turbulence detections.

Renaissance Mass Murder Civilians and Soldiers During the Italian Wars

8d9981dcd2dacdf35b058d19761c51c2.webp

Stephen D. Bowd, "Renaissance Mass Murder: Civilians and Soldiers During the Italian Wars"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0198832613 | PDF | pages: 303 | 55.5 mb
Renaissance Mass Murder explores the devastating impact of war on the men and women of the Renaissance. In contrast to the picture of balance and harmony usually associated with the Renaissance, it uncovers in forensic detail a world in which sacks of Italian cities and massacres of civilians at the hands of French, German, Spanish, Swiss, and Italian troops were regular occurrences.

The arguments presented are based on a wealth of evidence - histories and chronicles, poetry and paintings, sculpture and other objects - which together provide a new and startling history of sixteenth-century Italy and a social history of the Italian Wars. It outlines how massacres happened, how princes, soldiers, lawyers, and writers justified and explained such events, and how they were represented in contemporary culture.
On this basis, Renaissance Mass Murder reconstructs the terrifying individual experiences of civilians in the face of war and in doing so offers a story of human tragedy which redresses the balance of the history of the Italian Wars, and of Renaissance warfare, in favour of the civilian and away from the din of battle. This volume also places mass murder in a broader historical context and challenges claims that such violence was unusual or in decline in early modern Europe. Finally, it shows that women often suffered disproportionately from this violence and that immunity for them, as for their children, was often partially developed or poorly respected.

Aaron Pycroft, "René Girard and Criminal Justice: Demythologizing the Victim "
English | ISBN: 3031824709 | 2025 | 92 pages | EPUB | 223 KB
This book highlights the significance of René Girard's work for key criminological debates to provide new perspectives. Girard explores the causes of violence in humans and his work is used to interpret cultural phenomena related to criminology and victimology. The book focuses in particular on Girard's cultural anthropology of the victim as being foundational to social order. The scapegoat mechanism, as developed by Girard, is an anthropological reading of myth which provides a site of rich dialogue with criminology, victimology, theology and philosophy. The book explores how this provides readers with ontological, epistemological and methodological tools for both explaining and changing the practices of justice.
