Using Conversation Analytic methodology, it views complimenting and responding to compliments as social actions which are co-produced and negotiated among interactants. This study is the first to analyze the entire complimenting sequence within the larger interactional context, thereby demonstrating the interconnectedness of sequence organization, turn-design, and (varying) function(s) of a turn. In this regard, the present study makes a novel contribution to the study of talk-in-interaction beyond German.

The book adds to existing work on interaction and grammar by closely analyzing the functions of linguistic resources used to design compliment turns and compliment responses. Here, the study extends previous Conversation Analytic work on person reference by including an analysis of inanimate object reference. Lastly, the book discusses the use and function of various particles and demonstrates how speaker alignments and misalignments are accomplished through various grammatical forms.

"Computational Atomic Physics" deals with computational methods for calculating electron (and positron) scattering from atoms and ions, including elastic scattering, excitation, and ionization processes. After an introductory chapter on atomic collision theory, two chapters are devoted to the bound-state wavefunctions. A description of perturbative methods is followed by discussions of the standard non-perturbative close-coupling theory, the R-matrix method, and the recently developed "convergent-close-coupling" approach. The details of calculating accurate Coulomb and Bessel functions are treated as well. Finally, the calculation of scattering amplitudes is discussed and an introduction to the density-matrix theory is given. The book provides a practical application of advanced quantum mechanics. The abstract equations of general scattering theory are reduced to numerically solvable differential and integral equations, and computer codes for the solution are provided. Numerous suggested problems in the text and ten programs on a diskette contribute to a deeper understanding of the field. Computational Psycholinguistics: An Interdisciplinary Approach to theStudy of Language investigates the architecture and mechanisms which underlie the human capacity to process language. It is the first such study to integrate modern syntactic theory, cross-linguistic psychological evidence, and modern computational techniques in constructing a model of the human sentence processing mechanism. The monograph follows the rationalist tradition, arguing the central role of modularity and universal grammar in a theory of human linguistic performance. It refines the notion of `modularity of mind', and presents a distributed model of syntactic processing which consists of modules aligned with the various informational `types' associated with modern linguistic theories. By considering psycholinguistic evidence from a range of languages, a small number of processing principles are motivated and are demonstrated to hold universally.
