Germany and Austria are treasure troves of culture, offering some of Europe's most enthralling and memorable destinations for travelers. Linked by the German language, these two countries number among Europe's great civilizations and are known for global contributions to theology, philosophy, literature, art, music, science, and technology.
All of this and more is represented in the 2,000 years of history and the stunning sites to be discovered across Germany and Austria-from Roman fortresses, majestic cathedrals, and preserved medieval cityscapes to resplendent castles and palaces, modern wonders of industry, and futuristic urban planning. In addition to natural wonders, such as Germany's Black Forest, the soaring Austrian alps, and scenic North German seascapes, both countries are also home to some of the world's most beloved cities, brimming with treasures of architecture, great works of art, and the unique culture of the German-speaking world.
In this enchanting new entry into our Great Tours series, you'll take the measure of these two outstanding countries, visiting extraordinary sites such as
Vienna. One of the world's great romantic cities, an urban jewel teeming with music, Habsburg palaces, Belle Époque cafes, traditional foods, and an irrepressible joie de vivre.
Regensburg. Historic seat of the Holy Roman Empire, and a superlative medieval city designated as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Dresden. One of Europe's most magnificent cityscapes, and a glittering treasure house of baroque splendor.
Graz. In Austria's remote southeast and home to a dynamic blend of traditional culture and masterpieces of contemporary architecture, voted by the EU as 2003's "European Capital of Culture."
Munich. Germany's third largest city, a metropolis encompassing grand historic architecture, a mecca of film and television, BMW's futurist headquarters, and world-renowned beer gardens.
In The Great Tours: Germany and Austria, your journey unfolds with the expert guidance of James Pfrehm, a scholar and author who has intimately explored the German-speaking world for 30 years, traversing every state and major region of Germany and Austria. He has lived, worked, and studied for long periods in both countries. Professor Pfrehm has taught German language, literature, and culture at universities for more than 20 years and has taken dozens of students on trips to discover the unique culture and history of the region.
A Rich and Multilayered Civilization
To travel the historically rich lands of Germany and Austria is to encounter some of the greatest landmarks of European culture; some of the greatest natural beauty of the continent; and the many pleasures of the region's local traditions, food specialties, and celebrated beers and wines.
For this tour, Professor Pfrehm has organized your experience by what he calls the "three-river approach," following a route along three of the great rivers of Europe: the Danube, the Rhine, and the Elbe. With these geographic guideposts, along with side trips to special locations, you'll enjoy a richly detailed and wide-ranging trip through these two endlessly fascinating countries.
As always, this Great Tour gives you an in-depth template for planning a trip: this time to Austria and Germany. It also serves as a delightful way to experience the countries from the comfort of your home.
A Sumptuous Immersion in Germanic Culture and History
Throughout the 24 delightful segments of the tour, Professor Pfrehm's presentation brims with vivid color photos and his own onsite video footage, as well as illustrative maps, diagrams, artworks, and other visual aids. In a panorama of the region's most celebrated locations, you'll enjoy highlights such as
Glorious Salzburg. In Austria's "Rome of the North," and the birthplace of Mozart, discover the sprawling citadel of Festung Hohensalzburg, the ornate palaces of the city's prince-archbishops, the massive Salzburg Cathedral, and exquisite baroque churches.
The Romantic Rhine. Along the beautiful, winding Rhineland, visit the chain of majestic castles that enchant visitors from across the globe, with their dramatic history, architectural splendors, and the culture of Romanticism that emblemizes the region.
Cologne: A Perfumed History. A magnet for travelers. Explore Cologne's Innenstadt district, showing imposing Roman architecture, a legendary Gothic cathedral, and dazzling Christian treasures, and trace the story of the luxurious scent that bears the city's name.
Austria's Wachau Valley. A beautiful, verdant region along the Danube, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travel its medieval hamlets and castles, and the incredible monastery and ancient library of Melk, the apotheosis of 18th-century baroque opulence.
Hamburg: Gateway to Europe. Germany's great seaport, and a city bursting with life. Enjoy its café-studded promenades, waterscapes, lush green spaces, and grand landmarks-from its historic, UNESCO-designated warehouse district to its spectacular postmodern cultural complex and concert hall, the Elbphilharmonie.
In The Great Tours: Germany and Austria, with visits to more than 40 distinct locations across Austria and Germany, you'll also take in many of the region's less traveled gems, including
Tangermünde. Acclaimed as Germany's most beautiful small city, encircled by its extraordinary, preserved medieval wall.
Linz. Austria's hotspot for cutting-edge art, technology, and green industry.
Stendal. Home of the picturesque architecture of North German Brick Gothic.
Leipzig. The vibrant, historic city where J. S. Bach lived and performed.
Germany's Luther Cities. A sampling of five cities that bring alive the work of Martin Luther, highlighting Wittenberg, where he launched a religious revolution that would change the world.
Professor Pfrehm also marks the darker history of your destinations, examining the impact of the Nazi era in both countries, with visits to Buchenwald and to key Third Reich sites in Linz, Nuremberg, and Berlin.
A Wealth of Sights, Sounds, and Tastes
Throughout this uniquely engaging tour, Professor Pfrehm's presentation unfolds as a feast for the senses, drawing on his intimate knowledge of the region and his own zest for discovering the culture on all levels. Along the way, you'll discover
Iconic Food and Drink: No visit to these countries would be complete without sampling the treats of local gastronomy and spirits. The beers of Germany and Austria are among the world's most celebrated, and Professor Pfrehm offers fascinating details about them. He also gives many suggestions about which beers to sample and explains the social art of consuming them-from Kneitinger's Bockbier (Regensburg) and the König Pilsener of Duisberg to Feierling's Inselhopf (Freiburg) and the many beer gardens across the route of the tour where you can enjoy them.
You'll also savor a host of local food specialties, from the Black Forest's Kirschtorte and Bavaria's superb bratwurst sausages to Vienna's Kümmelbraten (pork roast), Leipzig's Leipziger Allerlei (a classic stew), and many others.
Traditions and Local Culture: Digging into the region's culture and traditions, Professor Pfrehm dishes up a generous helping of details that make a trip to these countries so rewarding. En route, you'll discover a sensuously Art Nouveau public restroom in Vienna and an astonishing medieval clock mechanism in Nuremberg, which has automatons representing the seven Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. You'll follow the footsteps of Goethe in Weimar; you'll glimpse the bacchanalian Karneval season in Cologne; you'll marvel at Magdeburg's Green Citadel, a futuristic residential and cultural center; and you'll enjoy natural beauty in the Altmark region of Germany and in Austria's alps near Salzburg.
And, within a culture that holds what is arguably the West's greatest classical music tradition, you'll track the lives of Bach and Mendelssohn in Leipzig, Brahms in Hamburg, Mozart in Salzburg and Vienna, and the concerts and music festivals that keep their works dynamically alive.
In The Great Tours: Germany and Austria, you'll delve deep into two unforgettable countries, their extraordinary historic and contemporary cultures, and their legacy as fountainheads of European civilization.
