CMG 2024.20 Release - (2024.104.G)
This release is the official 2024.20 release of CMG software. The products within the release contain many new features and bug fixes.
The release contains the following products:

Reservoirs
- In the Import Geological Model (RESCUE) stage, the option 'Zero values from selected property set gridblock' (which includes the sub-options Inactive and Active), has been modified. The definition of a zero value is now independent of any rounding or truncation of array values, regardless of whether they are of type double, int, or byte.
- Properties from decline curve reservoirs (e.g., pressure, cumulative rates, etc.) can now be monitored in a Simulation Time Event (STE) condition called 'Reservoir property monitor'. Previously, only discretized or tank models were supported.
Wells
- Guided tasks for CoFlow-X cases can now be copied to and from standard CoFlow cases.
- The 'Set Skin' and 'Set Productivity Index' STE actions have been extended to support time dependent tables.
- A new button, 'Multi-IPR Import', has been added to the Perforations and Equipment stage. This button opens a dialog that allows for importing simulation results from a successful CoFlow run. It can regress and populate the Forchheimer coefficients for multiple wells whether they are detached from reservoirs or attached to tank or decline curve reservoirs.
- The regression algorithm for matching well test data with the Forchheimer IPR model has been improved.
- The STE action 'Shut-in well layers' has been extended to allow for monitoring typical bottomhole properties (e.g., water cut, rates, etc.), and for plugging the most offending layer (i.e., the layer with the highest or lowest value of the monitored variable) before continuing the simulation. This functionality is available for both native/implicit and IMEX/GEM uncoupled and coupled cases.
- The 'Gas - Back Pressure' IPR model is now the default for perforations with a gas reference phase.
- A new column type is now supported in lift tables: 'LiftGasInjector/Injected GLR', which represents the ratio of the gas rate of the lift valve to the formation (bottomhole) liquid rate.
- The 'Fire only once' option is now checked by default for the STE condition operator 'Edge'. This change will not affect cases that are imported from previous versions of CoFlow.
Improvements for IMEX/GEM Uncoupled/Explicit Coupled
- The 'Set Skin' and 'Set Productivity Index' STE actions have been enhanced to support cases running both 'IMEX/GEM Uncoupled' and 'IMEX/GEM Explicit Coupled' configurations.
- The algorithm related to handling constraints for cases running both IMEX/GEM Uncoupled and Explicit Coupled configurations have been enhanced.
- The Numerical Settings options 'Drainage Region Correction' and 'Rate' are now the default options for new cases, respectively for properties: IPR table correction and Property to set in IMEX/GEM. This change does not affect cases that are imported from previous versions of CoFlow.
- The STE action 'Schedule well rate ramp-up' is now supported in both coupled and uncoupled runs.
- If the reservoir temperature is not found in the IMEX dataset, it will be estimated from either gas or water formation volume factor data and will be used for producer wells coupled with IMEX/GEM.
New Perforation Feature: Water Standoff
- This new option, available in the perforation sections of the Perforations and Equipment stage, will adjust the perforation start and end depths to prevent water production.
- The standoff distance is a required input and will be used by the simulator to determine how far the perforations will be moved away from the initial oil-water contact.
- This correction is applied once and is not updated during the simulations.
- A new case template has been included to introduce this new feature. See the Case Templates section for more information.
Facilities
- The GAP Importer (beta) has been extended to include pipe trajectories, number of passes (parallel pipes), flow correlations, and the addition of default equipment to preserve network connections for unsupported equipment.
New Transport Model: dP, dT vs. Q Model
- A new transport model has been developed for pipes, valves, and heat exchangers: The 'dP, dT vs. Q Model'. In this model, users can specify pressure and temperature changes as a function of instantaneous flow rates.
- Files imported from previous versions of CoFlow that were using the 'dP & dT Versus Flow Model (Shell add-on)' will be upgraded to utilize the new native option, provided that the respective add-on is installed in the Extensions folder.
- The dP&dT table, by definition, does not incorporate the effects of the absolute pressure level on dP and dT. This limits its applicability to representing physics that do not strongly depend on the absolute pressure level or to network nodes where the absolute pressure level will not change significantly over the course of the simulation. Therefore, it is not recommended for gas systems.
Fluids
- GEM EOS fluid models with the *H2O_INCLUDED keyword may now be imported. This allows calculation of equilibrium H2O in the hydrocarbon phases in GEM. Any vaporized water in GEM model production wells attached to CoFlow will be accounted for in the produced liquid water stream. Partitioning of H2O between aqueous and hydrocarbon phases is not done in CoFlow EOS calculations.
- The Corrosion Rate model has been enhanced to use a correlation for CO2 fugacity instead of CO2 partial pressure for Gas-Water fluid models. This gives corrosion rate results for Gas-Water models that more closely match rates where fugacity is computed from an EOS fluid model. In addition, corrosion rates will not be calculated if humidity of the stream is low enough that all water present will vaporize. Previously, corrosion rates were calculated if CO2 and any amount of water were present.
- The default gas property correlation for Universal Black Oil and Gas-Water models has been changed from CoFlow Internal to the Dranchuk and Abou-Kassem EOS. Existing models are unaffected.
Uncertainty and Prior Solve
- A new Prior Solver (wells and network solver) has been added: Integrated Production Forecasting (IPF). This solver utilizes cutback rules to restrict production and allocate injection in order to meet constraints in the network.
- Five new case templates have been included to introduce this new solver. See the Case Templates section for more information.
User Experience and Visualization
Case Templates
- Pre-built cases have been included for select features. These case templates enable users to interact with a feature in a typical modelling scenario, including a simulation for viewing the results. The cases are located in the CoFlow installation directory:\Templates\Cases\. The Templates folder includes a text file that lists all the cases and describes the available template cases. Use this text file to search for keywords. The specific case folder includes an explanatory PDF and a CFARC file which can be opened in CoFlow.

Architecture and Infrastructure
- Multi-Reservoir Restarts (beta) feature has an improved workflow which saves time by no longer re-importing reservoirs from RESCUE during forecast stages.
- Imported datasets can now seamlessly utilize restart files without needing keyword adjustments or command line switches. This simplifies the workflow and reduces setup time.
- One-way geomechanical cases now run more efficiently when using the "Save Timeseries and Profiles Only" option. This enhancement provides greater flexibility for managing large-scale uncertainty workflows.
- The performance of Scenario Analysis Managers with regards to selecting a base case and selecting parameters has improved significantly, achieving up to a 10x speed increase.
