The return of the hands-on synth.
By the early '90s, preset-driven digital synths with limited hands-on controls dominated the landscape. The JD-800 changed all that in 1991, bringing the synthesizer world back to its roots with a massive control-laden panel and an unapologetically electronic sound palette. With its player-focused workflow, evocative sounds, and powerful effects, the JD-800 was a favorite for top electronic music producers throughout the '90s and beyond.

A different kind of synthesizer.
Using D-50-style waveforms with multimode resonant filters, the JD-800 took a different approach to other synthesizers of the day and offered a glimpse at the exciting future of hybrid synthesis. Each of its four layers is like a complete synthesizer in its own right, with flexible modulation routing and time-variant amp and filter envelopes. This unique architecture, complex tonality, and immediate hands-on experience has endeared the JD-800 to many hard-core synth fans over the years.

The JD-800 Software Synthesizer is painstakingly crafted to sound and behave exactly like the original hardware. Rather than simply a bunch of JD-800 samples, we used the original waveform data along with advanced modeling techniques to perfectly recreate the big, bright, spacious sound that only the JD-800 can deliver.

A key ingredient of the JD-800's sound was its formidable multistage effects section. It's been carefully recreated here and enhanced with an expanded view perfect for realtime tweaking. In addition to a master EQ, there are seven effects that can be rearranged via drag and drop to customize your signal flow. Choose from distortion/overdrive, enhancer, spectrum equalizer, phaser, chorus, triple-tap delay, and a selection of reverbs, each with multiple parameters that vastly change the sonic character.

Roland and its guitar products division BOSS are well known for introducing many influential effects to the music world. But perhaps none is more revered and imitated than the stereo chorus. Debuted in 1975 and evolved and refined over multiple generations, this Roland original continues to captivate with an uncanny ability to bring depth, dimension, and life to any sound source.

Secret sauce.
The lush stereo chorus effect in the JUNO-60 was specially tuned to enhance the synth's single DCO, fat sub-oscillator, and characterful VCF. Players quickly found it to be an essential component of the JUNO's unique voice, making it hit well above its weight and compete with more sophisticated-and much more expensive-multi-oscillator polysynths of the day.

Better is a press away.
The straightforward chorus section on the original JUNO-60 provides OFF, I, and II buttons-but OFF never gets much use. The first chorus mode adds a gentle shimmer to the sound, while the second offers a deeper, wider effect. Pressing the I and II buttons together calls up a "secret" third mode for exaggerated movement with a distinctive swirl.

The JUNO-60 was among the earliest models in Roland's iconic JUNO series, and it still tops many synth aficionado's lists of all-time favorites. Released in 1982 to replace the JUNO-6, it improved on its predecessor with a then-rare ability to save patches. While the next-generation JUNO-106 would further popularize the JUNO name, the JUNO-60 has a characteristic fatness and hi-fi punch that remains eternally desirable to musicians and producers everywhere.

The JUNO formula of a single DCO, fat sub-oscillator, and characterful VCF-and, of course, the massive swirling chorus-adds up to a sound you can't help but love. In the decades since we released the original JUNO-60, we've continued our deep research into the science of sound and synthesis. Our proprietary ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology is behind the startlingly accurate sound of the JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer and other Legendary series plug-ins. It involves carefully modeling the actual analog circuits of our iconic designs for sound so lifelike it makes the hair on your neck stand up.

In designing the JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer, we felt it was important to not veer too far from the original's carefully balanced magic-including its odd quirks and charming limitations. But we couldn't resist adding a few touches like extending the oscillator range and adding a second envelope for a little extra flexibility. It's still a JUNO-60, just.more.

For all the filter freaks.
You can't overstate how much filters contribute to the sound of a synthesizer. Roland filters are well known for having a lot of character, and the JUNO-60's filter is a prime example. You could apply all kinds of adjectives to its sound-sweet, fat, juicy-and you wouldn't be wrong. The JUNO-60 Software Synthesizer models the original filter to perfection, and even includes the ability to switch to the JUNO-106's HPF circuit with its characteristic bass bump.

A chorus of choruses. And more.
A huge part of the JUNO sound is its insanely lush chorus circuit. Like the original, the software version has two selectable chorus modes, plus a third "secret" mode accessed by engaging both buttons at the same time. This behavior is modeled in detail, along with the inherent noise that most JUNO fans would say is part of its charm. Taking things further, we've added another chorus option with the classic BOSS CE-1 pedal, along with a selection of equally luscious reverb, delay, flanger, and overdrive effects.

The New Digital
By the early '90s, digital synthesizers had completely taken over the market, and rack units had become popular in studios and on stages alike. Thanks to advancements in digital technology, Roland began to pack a seemingly impossible amount of sounds into a single unit. And by utilizing optional PCM sound cards, users could expand their units with specialized sound sets.

The Sound of the '90s
Throughout the '90s, the JV-1080 helped fuel the sounds of R&B, pop, hip hop, and rock, and was regularly heard in film and TV scores. Originally designed to mimic acoustic instruments, many of these sounds became so widespread they're now part of our collective musical vocabulary. Some say it's the most recorded sound module in history, and modern artists are still utilizing these sounds in new and creative ways.

Big Little Brother
Initially designed as a "kid brother" to the JUPITER-4, the deceptively small PROMARS married the stability and flexibility of microprocessor control with the rich sound of analog, and was one of the first synths with onboard memory. This powerful monophonic instrument boasted fat buzzy leads and a powerful low end, proving big things often come in little packages.

Otherworldly Tones
While the JUPITER-4 featured one VCO and one sub-oscillator per voice, PROMARS had two of each. Users could detune them to produce a distinctive unison chorus effect, producing sounds like a four-VCO synthesizer. The SH-2 Software Synthesizer is an authentic sonic reproduction of Roland's classic SH-2 synthesizer from 1979. Renowned for its raw vintage tone, the SH-2's dual VCO plus sub-oscillator configuration dishes out devastatingly fat basses, edgy leads, and wild effects.

Party Like It's 1979
In the late 1970s, synthesizers were undergoing a significant transition with the development of polyphony and onboard patch memory. As the world's synth manufacturers raced to develop these new technologies, Roland launched a seemingly basic monophonic synthesizer-the now-classic SH-2.

The Place for Bass
Released around the same time as Roland's pioneering JUPITER-4, the SH-2's functionality was conservative by comparison. But its configuration of two VCOs and a sub-oscillator essentially gave it three VCOs, making it capable of extremely fat and warm analog synth tones. To this day, many synth aficionados feel it produces the most earth-shaking, bone-rattling synth bass sounds of all time.

Plug In Your Own SH-2
The SH-2 software leverages Roland's deep knowledge of the original units to faithfully capture every fine detail, right down to the interaction between the individual circuits. Everything has been reproduced exactly, from the self-oscillating VCF to the attack and decay characteristics of the steep envelope. The original's unique harmonic makeup and pitch wavering are present, as are behaviors that occur only in analog circuitry, like the subtle effect on tonality when parameters unrelated to the actual tone are adjusted.
