Cycling '74 has released version 8 of Max and the company is calling it "the closest thing to a mind-expanding drug Max has ever had". The visual programming language has taken on a raft of new improvements in the latest iteration, most notably the introduction of the new MC. objects.
MC, we're presuming, stands for multi-channel and Cycling '74 is sure it will "transform how you imagine sound design". It makes patches with 100 channels of audio look as simple as those with a single channel.
It seems MC will give you the ability to manipulate multiple audio channels and operations with fewer objects.
Much of the development in version 8 has been focussing on performance. Cycling '74 now claim that Max will launch 20 times faster on Windows than before and load patches up to four times as quick. Performance as a whole is improved, with complex UI operations being significantly more responsive.
Another big update is the ability to control your patches with hardware, without the need to patch. In the new Mappings Mode, you can assign physical controls to your patch in just three steps; simply enter Mappings Mode, select a slider and then move your controller - done.
Other improvements include a new Search Sidebar which allows you access to thousands of Max examples and tutorials that ship with Max, along with results from web forums and in-depth articles.

Borsta (Swedish verb, means to brush) is a drum and percussion instrument that simulates strokes and brushes. Its unique audio engine allows for an endless number of very natural sounding brushing phrases and rhythms.
What sets Borsta apart from similar instruments is that its audio engine supports continuous changes in intensity. This makes it possible to create life-like brushing phrases and patterns, something that can't be easily achieved with ordinary sample-based instruments.
The parallel envelope and events sequencers allow you to determine exactly when to start a stroke, how the stroke's pressure/speed should evolve over time and when to end it. On top of that, each instrument also offers multi-sampled one-shots with advanced choking capabilities.
Each instrument is based on more than 400 high-quality samples, recorded for playing with different velocities and round robins. The initial version of Borsta comes with 18 different instruments, but each instance of the plug-in emulates one single drum instrument at a time. That means the sequences can only be played one at a time. However, switching between sequences can be done seamlessly via MIDI, and additional one-shot samples can be triggered using an ordinary MIDI track.
The instruments are all structured and MIDI-mapped in a uniform way, which makes it possible to use the same sequence on any instrument. For instance, a traditional swing pattern will sound musically correct no matter whether you choose a Frame Drum, Tambourine or Snare Drum - it will just sound like the musician changed instruments.

The first workstation synthesizer, released in 1988, which defined the sound of the late '80s and early '90s: M1.
Along with its innovative "workstation" concept, the M1's "AI" (Advanced Integrated) synthesis system used PCM waveforms and digital effects to deliver fully complete program and combination sounds. As a pioneer of PCM tone generation, it was notable not just for the reality of its sound, but also for the distinctive resonance and tonal character that demonstrated the high level of Korg's voicing technology. Numerous sounds available only from the M1, most notable the famous "M1 Piano" sound, were taken up by musicians and producers around the world, and are still in use today.
The software features filter resonance, VDA modulation, and master effects that have been powered up to a total of 18 systems. It provides all of the PCM, Program, and Combination data found in the original M1 and the M1EX internal PCM expansion, plus the PCM data and Program/Combination data from all nineteen optional ROM cards.What's more, in addition to all 19 types of the PCM ROM cards for the M1, the sound of the M1EX which was released as an expansion of the M1's built-in PCM, as well as the sounds of the T-series, which advanced the M1. At the beginning of the 1970s, many compact monophonic synthesizers appeared on the market. However, most of them were used mainly by famous musicians who could afford rare instruments or as research devices in the academic world. KORG wanted to give the average musician the chance to experience this new type of musical instrument. After much trial and error, the company's first mass-produced synthesizer was announced in 1973: the miniKORG 700. With a simple appearance that belied its ability to produce diverse sounds beyond imagination, it charmed many musicians who loved its unique and thick tonal quality.
The miniKORG 700S, the improved version with an additional VCO, was announced the next year, and has now been recreated as a software instrument.
The miniKORG 700S for Mac and Windows is a faithful reproduction of the original analog hardware, with powerful new features only possible in software.
Now the unique sounds and capabilities of this historic KORG synthesizer can be enjoyed on your computer.
A Faithful Recreation of Unique Circuitry
The original miniKORG 700S was a 2VCO, 2VCF, 1EG, 1LFO monophonic synthesizer. Because synthesizers were not as common as they are today, its circuitry was unique. For example, when developing the triangle wave oscillator, the engineers aimed to create a circuit that produced a beautifully musical sound rather than a scientifically accurate one.
In addition to the oscillator circuit, the low and high pass filters were combined into a single, unique part called the Traveler Controller, which was a distinctive feature of KORG's early synthesizers.
Instead of a more traditional ADSR style envelope, the miniKORG700s allows the user to control the shape of the sound with two sliders; one that controls attack time and decay time, and one that controls sustain level and release time. These quirks and more have all been faithfully reproduced in the software version.

The Mono/Poly is Korg's four-VCO monophonic/polyphonic synthesizer that went on sale in 1981 and was considered the culmination of Korg's experience building analog synthesizers. It was released at the same time as the Polysix, and because of their capabilities as well as their price, these two instruments caused a revolution in the synthesizer world. Many musicians acclaimed the Mono/Poly as Korg's best synthesizer yet, with a number of unique characteristics.
It provided four VCOs, each providing adjustable pitch, waveform, octave, and level, which could be stacked together for massive sounds, or cycled through one at a time for constantly shifting timbres. Together with one VCF, one VCA, two EGs, and two MGs it provided a powerful yet accessible programming structure.

The analog monophonic synthesizer with the potential for patching that went on sale in 1978: the MS-20. The entirety of the MS-20 is reproduced with its two oscillators (which can be ring-modulated), high-pass/low-pass self-oscillating filters with unique distortion, and a patch section with an external signal processor that can accommodate external audio input.
For the software, 32 voices of polyphony and up to 16-voice unison (with detune/spread function) were added. Flexible external modulation settings and MIDI clock synchronization have also been introduced, allowing for sound production with a high level of flexibility and freedom.
