Paradoxical Phenomena

Consider these examples:

The game show Let's Make a Deal® entertained viewers with Monty Hall urging contestants to pick a door. The choice involves a question of chance that has been the source of many heated arguments. You explore the mathematics that prepares you for future game-show stardom and explains a paradoxical example of probability.
Coincidences are striking because any particular one is extremely improbable. However, what is even more improbable is that no coincidence will occur. You see that finding two people having the same birthday in a room of 45 is extremely likely, by chance alone, even though the probability that any particular two people will have the same birthday is extremely low.
One of the most famous illustrations of randomness is the scenario of monkeys randomly typing Hamlet. Another, called "Buffon's needle," shows how random behavior can be used to estimate numbers such as pi. Physicists discovered that a similar needle-dropping model accurately predicts certain atomic phenomena.
The Fourth Dimension

Mathematical thinking leads not only to insights about our everyday lives and everyday world but also points us to worlds far beyond our own. Take the fourth dimension. The very phrase conjures up notions of science fiction or the supernatural.

Because the fourth dimension lies beyond our daily experience, visualizing, exploring, and understanding it requires us to develop an intuition about a world that we cannot see. Nevertheless, that understanding is within our reach.

You learn how to construct a four-dimensional cube and why a four-dimensional surgeon could remove your appendix without making an incision in your skin.

Fractals

Or take a world that we can see: the two-dimensional realm. It can be just as rich with surprises. You learn how the simple exercise of repeatedly folding a sheet of paper introduces the concept of fractals-a geometric pattern that is infinitely complex-repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry.

You discover that the paper-folding sequence offers an example of the classical computational theory of "automata," developed by Alan Turing-the father of modern computing. Fractal construction processes may also relate to the behavior of the stock market and even to your heart rate.

Life Lessons

As Professors Burger and Starbird lead you through these and other examples, you pick up some valuable life lessons:

Just do it. If you're faced with a problem and you don't know how to solve it, begin by taking some action.
Make mistakes and fail but never give up. Mathematicians are supremely gifted at making mistakes. The key is to use the insight from your mistakes to identify the features of a correct solution to your problem.
Keep an open mind. If we are never willing to consider new ideas, then we can never hope to increase our understanding of the world around us.
Explore the consequences of new ideas. This strategy pushes us to see where an idea leads and in this way to discover new ideas and insights.
Seek the essential. One of the biggest obstacles in solving real-world problems is the noise and clutter of irrelevant issues that surround them.
Understand the issue. Identifying and clarifying the problem to be solved in a situation is often a significant step in reaching a solution.
Understand simple things deeply. We can never understand unknown situations without an intense focus on those aspects of the unknown that are familiar. The familiar, in other words, serves as the best guide to the unfamiliar.
Break a difficult problem into easier ones. This strategy is fundamental to mathematics and, indeed, applicable in everyday life.
Examine issues from several points of view. We can, for example, gain new insights by looking at the construction of an object, rather than the object itself.

Wave Box is a dynamic dual waveshaper plugin that can be used for both symmetrical and asymmetrical distortion. A waveshaper is a type of distortion in which the input signal is mapped to the output by applying a fixed or variable shaping function.

Space Strip is a multi-effect plugin featuring 6 modules: Contour, Vibe, Slapback, Ambience, Ensemble, and Stereo. The modules can be arranged in any combination by simple drag-n-drop. Space Strip will add depth and space to your sounds, especially synth and keyboards. The plugin is optimised to be lightweight on the CPU.

Outer Space is a faithful emulation plugin of a famous vintage tape echo made in the early seventies. As the original unit, Outer Space features a tape echo section with three playback heads and a spring reverb tank. We have modelled three different tape frequency responses and saturations, along with all the analog imperfections of tape recording/playback.

Fog Convolver is a true stereo convolution reverb/processor plugin. Convolution works by applying the sonic character of an impulse response to another sound in real time. Fog Convolver can be used to add reverberation, create special effects, and apply an acoustic impulse captured from audio equipment. An impulse response is a recording of the output that is caused by an acoustic space or electronic gear when an impulse is played (electric spark, starter pistol shot or the bursting of a balloon).

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen gets right down to the fundamentals of design in this fascinating back-to-basics series. He tackles real problems in real homes as he explores six themes: space, colour, light, texture and pattern, balance and order, and personality. In addition to his own in-depth knowledge of design principles, Laurence calls on a colour forecaster, psychologists and a perception specialist to explain and demonstrate the science behind the how and the why.

Space comes under the spotlight in the first programme. Lack of space is a common problem in British homes which, surprisingly, have 20 square metres less space than Japanese homes, with an average of only 120 square metres.

"The cardinal sin that the British indulge in beyond any other nation is the concept of agoraphobic furniture that feels it needs to keep its back against the wall at all times in case something unpleasant happens to it!" quips Laurence.

By painting the walls a paler colour, bringing the outside inside by strategically placing an eye-catching object outside the window and switching to light-reflecting flooring, the brain is deluded into thinking that the room is bigger. Suddenly, the crowded living room is calmer and seems larger thanks to a little bit of science and the tricks of design rules.

Eye brain specialist Dr Ione Fine comments: "Half of interior design is illusion."And on a practical note, Laurence shows why it's better to buy a couple of two-seater sofas because three people never sit on a three-seater

About Redshift Renderer. Redshift is the world's first fully GPU-accelerated, biased renderer. Redshift renders scenes many times faster than existing CPU-based renderers.

Redshift was designed from the ground up to be a production-strength, biased GPU renderer. "Production strength" means the software is stable/reliable and can handle large datasets, i.e. scenes containing tens or even hundreds of millions of polygons and tens of gigabytes of textures. Redshift can support large datasets that exceed the GPU memory capabilities due to its out-of-core architecture which allows data to efficiently be moved between the CPU and the GPU. "Biased" means allowing artists to tweak shading in non-physical ways and achieving the look they require. It also means being able to approximate certain lighting aspects with less accurate but faster-to-render techniques. "Biased" should not be confused with a lack of physical correctness - which Redshift also supports! It should be interpreted as "better control". And, finally, because Redshift is optimized to run on the GPU, this means it offers all of the above while being albe to render several times faster than its CPU counterparts.

Redshift is tightly integrated with 3d apps. Redshift's deep level of integration means new users will feel right at home. Apart from deep integration, the Redshift plugins also aim to offer a consistent user experience across the supported 3d apps - within the limits of each 3d app, of course. This is important for the reason, what many artists these days find themselves having to jump between different 3d apps, depending on their project's needs.

In this video Andrew Silke goes over the awesome new Redshift Denoiser using Nvidia's Optix Ai system. He also covers new Maya IPR improvements including animation and timeline live IPR. All these things and more including IPR progressive AOV's are available to Redshift users in the experimental 2.6.0 builds.
