This gardening advice is for people who want to produce some of their own food using tried and true methods to obtain free plants for their garden from cuttings, pips, and seeds.
In the UK the price of food is rising to such that many families are finding it difficult to cope with the weekly grocery bills. Also, there are concerns about the quality of the food we buy in the supermarkets. Growing your own will provide you with produce that tastes much better as it is fresh and not travelled miles to the supermarket after sitting in a warehouse for several days, losing nutrients and flavour. If you grow your own organically, you are not eating the pesticides which farmers use and which can have adverse health effects.
Producing some of your own food can be very cost effective, particularly if you have friends and family who can give you seeds and cuttings. Also, you can save the pips and seeds from fruit you have bought in the supermarket or street market.
You may be surprised to know, I have a flourishing lemon tree that was germinated from a pip found in a slice of lemon in a gin and tonic, planted twenty years ago and producing flowers each year, and now a couple of fruits!
Some tinned cooked tomatoes (plum tomatoes, or otherwise called 'squelchers') were put on the compost heap with the scraps, and the following year tomato plants were found sprouting in the compost, then replanted in the garden and we got tomatoes off them!
This goes to show, you do not have to buy expensive plants from the garden centre for your garden, you can source them from unexpected places that you may not have thought of before.
I have also included in this book some fruits that are not really suitable to grow in this temperate climate as they will not produce edible fruit, however they are great fun to grow anyway and add an exotic tropical look to your garden. They will make a good talking point and are interesting to look at as grown as ornamental plants.
