Aunque nunca llegó a ser "caliente" entre las dos superpotencias, la Guerra Fría fue una época tensa hasta la disolución de la URSS, y nada simbolizó más la ruptura que la división de Berlín. Para impedirlo, había que cortar el acceso a Occidente a través de Berlín Occidental, así que en agosto de 1961, el primer ministro soviético Nikita Khrushchev autorizó al líder de Alemania Oriental, Walter Ulbricht, a iniciar la construcción de lo que se conocería como el Muro de Berlín. El muro, iniciado el domingo 13 de agosto, acabaría rodeando la ciudad, a pesar de la condena mundial, y el propio Muro de Berlín se convertiría en el símbolo de la represión comunista en el bloque oriental. También puso fin a los intentos de Khrushchev de concluir un tratado de paz entre las Cuatro Potencias (soviéticos, estadounidenses, Reino Unido y Francia) y los dos estados alemanes.
El muro serviría de perfecta oportunidad fotográfica para que dos presidentes (Kennedy y Reagan) arremetieran contra los comunistas soviéticos y su represión, pero el Muro de Berlín se mantendría en pie durante casi 30 años, aislando el Este del Oeste. Se calcula que unas 200 personas morirían intentando cruzar el muro para desertar a Occidente.
La Guerra Fría no dio señales de detenerse durante las décadas de 1970 y 1980. En 1979, la Unión Soviética invadió Afganistán para apoyar a un gobierno comunista en decadencia. Al principio, Estados Unidos se opuso a la invasión sólo diplomáticamente, negándose a participar en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1980 en Moscú y adoptando otras medidas diplomáticas. Con el tiempo, sin embargo, Estados Unidos comenzó a apoyar a los insurgentes que luchaban contra el régimen comunista en Afganistán, de forma similar a lo que la Unión Soviética había hecho en Vietnam del Sur años antes. Estados Unidos y su aliado Pakistán proporcionaron armas y entrenamiento a los combatientes afganos, que fueron capaces de amenazar cada vez más la estabilidad del régimen comunista. La Unión Soviética se vio obligada a destinar más tropas y recursos a Afganistán, y sufrió importantes bajas.

El nacimiento de Europa tal y como la conocemos hoy no fue un proceso fácil y sin esfuerzo. El Viejo Continente fue remodelado durante siglos de continuas guerras, incursiones y caídas y ascensos de imperios. Los acontecimientos más turbulentos se produjeron al principio de la Edad Media, entre los siglos III y VII de nuestra era. Fue la época en que la antigua sociedad esclavista dio paso al sistema feudal que marcó la Baja Edad Media, y también fue un periodo de batallas entre el Imperio Romano y diversos pueblos bárbaros. Los emperadores romanos libraron guerras, hicieron y deshicieron alianzas y sobornaron y negociaron con los jefes de diversas tribus "bárbaras" para preservar la integridad territorial de sus imperios, pero la división tajante entre el mundo civilizado de los romanos y el de los "salvajes" que amenazaban sus fronteras se iba embotando con cada década. De hecho, la constante necesidad de reclutas para el ejército engrosó las legiones romanas con foederati bárbaros, un fenómeno que obligó tanto a los romanos como a los bizantinos a utilizar una forma muy sutil de enfrentar a las tribus bárbaras entre sí mediante ardides diplomáticos y generosas recompensas. También estaba arraigando una nueva religión: El cristianismo se convirtió tanto en motivo de unificación como de división, ya que diferentes pueblos adoptaron distintas variantes de sus enseñanzas.

Ni que decir tiene que los godos desempeñaron un papel fundamental en la historia de Europa durante esa época, y siguen siendo uno de los grupos más notorios y controvertidos de la historia. En el siglo IV d.C., los godos eran uno de los principales grupos bárbaros que se convirtieron en una amenaza para el Imperio Romano, pero también mantuvieron contactos con los romanos mucho antes, e incluso comerciaron durante un tiempo. Las dos ramas de los godos más conocidas, los visigodos y los ostrogodos, se enfrentaron al Imperio Romano cuando estaba a punto de derrumbarse y lo suplantaron con un reino en Italia en los siglos V y VI respectivamente. El líder visigodo Alarico y el líder ostrogodo Teodorico siguen siendo nombres muy conocidos por sus hazañas y reinados en Europa.
Además de los conflictos de los visigodos con Roma, el autor antiguo Jordanes ha contribuido a mantener la relevancia de los godos con su obra fundamental El origen y los hechos de los godos, que traza la historia del grupo hasta aproximadamente el año 1500 a.C. y abarca sus migraciones y guerras en el continente europeo. Aunque hay quien sigue tachando la obra de Jordanes de ficción, la mayoría de los historiadores creen que se trata de un valioso trabajo histórico y siguen basándose en él para estudiar y trazar la historia de los godos y sus diversas ramas a lo largo del tiempo.
Lo que sí se sabe es que los godos establecieron el Reino de Tolosa, uno de los muchos pequeños reinos que surgieron durante los últimos años del Imperio Romano en el siglo 5th de nuestra era. A pesar de su tamaño y su escasa fama, ocupa un lugar importante en la historia europea, no necesariamente por sus propios logros (nunca fue una gran potencia), sino más bien por su influencia en el curso de los acontecimientos que siguieron al final del Imperio Romano de Occidente. Los propios visigodos son un grupo étnico muy difamado e incomprendido, por lo que a menudo se olvida el alcance de su influencia en las estructuras políticas emergentes de España y Francia, así como en las culturas de esas naciones. En particular, el papel de Tolosa a la hora de detener el avance aparentemente imparable de Atila y los hunos debería ser recordado, dada su importancia para la futura historia de Europa.
