Illegal immigration continues to roil American politics. The right-wing media stir up panic over "anchor babies," job stealing, welfare dependence, bilingualism, al-Qaeda terrorists disguised as Latinos, even a conspiracy by Latinos to "retake" the Southwest. State and local governments have passed more than 300 laws that attempt to restrict undocumented immigrants' access to hospitals, schools, food stamps, and driver's licenses. Federal immigration authorities stage factory raids that result in arrests, deportations, and broken families -- and leave owners scrambling to fill suddenly open jobs. The DREAM Act, which would grant permanent residency to high school graduates brought here as minors, is described as "amnesty." And yet polls show that a majority of Americans support some kind of path to citizenship for those here illegally. What is going on? In this book, John Tirman shows how the resistance to immigration in America is more cultural than political. Although cloaked in language about jobs and secure borders, the cultural resistance to immigration expresses a fear that immigrants are changing the dominant white, Protestant, "real American" culture. Tirman describes the "raid mentality" of our response to immigration, which seeks violent solutions for a social phenomenon. He considers the culture clash over Chicano ethnic studies in Tucson, examines the consequences of an immigration raid in New Bedford, and explores the civil rights activism of young "Dreamers." The current "round them up, deport them, militarize the border" approach, Tirman shows, solves nothing.

This book deals with a crucial and yet under-explored topic that has increasingly gained momentum during modern armed conflicts, i.e. dual-use objects under international humanitarian law (IHL). Dual-use objects, such as energy infrastructures, water installations and civilian means of transportation and communication, which could be used also for military purposes, is a term that has entered the IHL jargon but has not attained the status of a legal concept.

Dual-use objects are easily identifiable and yet remain difficult to pin down, in particular when it comes to separating them from military objectives and determining the applicable rules to enhance their protection. Although attacks against critical infrastructures are traditionally justified as being part of a legitimate military strategy, experts and, in some instances, governments are uncomfortable with the idea of depriving the civilian population of services and goods essential to its survival. Yet, the sense of discomfort has not led to any significant improvement and 'dual-use objects' remain on the target lists of most belligerents. A number of factors, which this book analyses to explain the rise and rationale behind the current 'mainstream approach' to dual-use objects, contributed to cementing the status quo.
The present book, building on these premises, pursues a twofold aim. First, this book seeks to fill a significant gap in the IHL scholarship in light of the limited attention that the topic has received so far. Second, this book aims to challenge the mainstream approach through a rigorous inquiry and the development of a new paradigm. The paradigm shift, which is at the heart of this study, places under the spotlight the civilian function of dual-use objects and reclaim the central role of the individual actors that plan, order and execute attacks against these targets. This book aspires to become an essential tool for academics and practitioners working in the IHL field, but at the same time its readership is expected to include students at all levels that have an interest in the topic and seeks to approach it in an innovative way.

E-commerce marketing is at the intersection of information systems technology (i.e. supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management), traditional marketing, and the customer interface. In the broader sense E-commerce marketing is comprised of electronic-based activities that facilitate manufactured goods and services by the producer to satisfy the wants and needs of the consumer. To this end, E-commerce marketing is concerned with strategies to persuade customers to purchase online, market research, distribution, customer relationship management, and customer satisfaction. The theme of this special issue of the Journal of Enterprise Information Management is E-commerce relationship marketing research, which consists of software and analytical methods to coordinate online market research, buildWeb sites to facilitate and promote online buying, and to understand customer preferences so as to increase sales and retain economically valuable customers. Several different calls for papers were issued, a general call in IS World, filers at the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science and at America's Conference on Information Systems. We also sent e-mails to researchers all over the world to elicit papers. We received 22 papers and accepted five. The first paper by Scullin, Fjermestad and Romano discusses the changes to the marketing concepts (customer buying, marketing strategy, call centers) that have been brought about because of electronic customer relationship management. The paper illustrates several examples of how eCRM has altered the marketing concept. The second paper by Chai and Pavlou conducts an empirical study investigating whether cultural dissimilarities really matter in the context of growing a virtual business. The results suggest that culture plays moderating role on E-commerce adoption. Roussinov and Zhao, in their paper build a prototype eCRM to explore and improve communication effectiveness and efficiency in a university environment. The results suggest that a text clustering technique can aid in analyzing customer messages, thus providing a valuable source of customer information. Webb and Webb present a conceptual model and an instrument to measure Web site quality. A factor analysis of the data suggests that there are three key quality factors that customers are concerned about (navigation, relevant representation, and accuracy). These factors are further discussed in the paper. The last paper by White and Daniel was awarded the "best overall paper" at the Business Information Technology (BIT) Conference held at Manchester Metropolitan University in November 2002. This paper explores the e-marketplace dyadic buyer-supplier relationships in the health sector. The results suggest that the adoption of an e-marketplace reduces the number of suppliers used, but more importantly, expands the relationship between and blurs the boundaries of the parties.
