Letters from Samaria The Prose & Poetry of Louie Crew Clay
Louie Clay, Max Niedzwiecki, Phyllis Tickle, "Letters from Samaria: The Prose & Poetry of Louie Crew Clay"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 081923219X | EPUB | pages: 176 | 0.6 mb
The definitive collection from one of thethe leading voices on LGBTQ issues in the Episcopal Church.
Letters from Samaria gathers together much of Louie (Crew) Clay's best and most influential prose and poetry, written from 1974 until the present day, including an essay composed especially for the volume. Much of the material has not appeared since its original publication in newsletters and other ephemeral sources. It is crisply written, and often surprising for its bravery, matter-of-fact self-disclosure, insight, and love. Louie played a pivotal role in transforming The Episcopal Church - and, indeed, Christianity - over the past 40 years. This collection provides a window into Louie Clay's unlikely and at times shocking ministry throughout the years as history was unfolding.

Like The Button That Changed the World
Like: The Button That Changed the World by Martin Reeves, Bob Goodson
English | April 29th, 2025 | ISBN: 9798892790451 | 288 pages | True EPUB | 13.20 MB
A riveting, insider's look at the creation and evolution of the like button and what it reveals about innovation, business, and culture-and its profound impact on modern human interaction.
"...an entertaining new book by Martin Reeves and Bob Goodson on the origins of the "like" button." - The Economist
Over seven billion times a day, someone taps a like button. How could something that came out of nowhere become so ubiquitous-and even so addictive? How did this seemingly ordinary social media icon go from such a small and unassuming invention to something so intuitive and universally understood that it has scaled well beyond its original intent?
This is the story of the like button and how it changed our lives. In Like, bestselling author and renowned strategy expert Martin Reeves and coauthor Bob Goodson-Silicon Valley veteran and one of the originators of the like button-take readers on a quest to uncover the origins of the thumbs-up gesture, how it became an icon on social media, and what's behind its power.
Through insights from key players, including the founders of Yelp, PayPal, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Gmail, and FriendFeed, you'll hear firsthand the disorderly, serendipitous process from which the like button was born. It's a story that starts with a simple thumbs-up cartoon but ends up with surprises and new mysteries at every turn, some of them as deep as anthropological history and others as speculative as the AI-charged future.
But this is much more than the origin story of the like button. Drawing on business and innovation theory, evolutionary biology, social psychology, neuroscience, and other human-centered disciplines, this deeply researched book offers smart and unexpected insights into how this little icon changed our world-and all of us in the process.

Liminality and the City in Contemporary New York Fiction (ePUB)
Liminality and the City in Contemporary New York Fiction
by Alina Stocklöv
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3662712105 | 189 Pages | True ePUB | 0.33 MB
This book explores liminal spaces and states in New York City literature after 2000. The concept of "liminality" refers to a transitional state where people, places, or ideas exist between two clearly defined conditions. In this ambiguous "in-between state", uncertainty, indeterminacy, and change prevail, temporarily suspending traditional norms and allowing for complex identity formation and social reordering. Liminality offers a multifaceted, interdisciplinary approach to urban literature, as the city itself is defined by both temporal and spatial thresholds. The study examines the interplay between liminality, the city, and postmodernism, as well as the literary representation and narrative depiction of these relations.
Drawing on key anthropological works by Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, and engaging with the writings of Jacques Derrida, Henri Lefebvre, Carl Gustav Jung, Michel Foucault, Walter Benjamin, and Homi K. Bhabha, this study investigates the development of the concept of liminality in the humanities. It then proceeds with comparative literary analysis of selected texts by canonical authors such as Don DeLillo, Jonathan Safran Foer, Joseph O'Neill, and Teju Cole, focusing on urban mobility, liminal spaces, and New York as a place of memory and trauma in the post-9/11 literary landscape.

Literary Culture in the Medieval Welsh Marches Networks, Places, Politics
Literary Culture in the Medieval Welsh Marches: Networks, Places, Politics
Matthew Siôn Lampitt
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9780192846662 | 261 Pages | True PDF | 3.6 MB
The Welsh Marches, a name which today refers to the borderland regions between England and Wales, are often coupled with images of idealized rusticity, of 'blue remembered hills'. Yet, in the Middle Ages, the Marches stretched from the borders into much of modern-day Mid and South Wales, and were important spaces of conflict, colonization, and contact; of complex, shifting, strategic politics and identities; and, crucially, of vibrant literary activity. An exploration of the Marches' multilingual literary cultures, this book is structured around three geotemporal case studies: Hereford, c. 1170-c. 1210; Ludlow, c. 1310-c. 1350; Ynysforgan, c. 1380-c. 1410. Analysing texts and manuscripts composed, copied, compiled, translated, or otherwise circulated in these locales, this study crosses linguistic and disciplinary boundaries to formulate readings of works in French, Welsh, English, and Latin. These readings are developed through an extended engagement with the philosophy of Bruno Latour, particularly his work on Actor-Network-Theory and modes of existence. From these perspectives, this book not only situates the March within wider literary networks, but also reads its texts as networking narratives that deconstruct binaries of centre and periphery, of local and global, of human and nonhuman, and even of reality and fiction themselves.

Literary Knowing and the Making of English Teachers
Larissa McLean Davies, Brenton Doecke, Philip Mead, "Literary Knowing and the Making of English Teachers: The Role of Literature in Shaping English Teachers' Professional Knowledge and Identities"
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0367618680 | PDF | pages: 255 | 4.8 mb
At a time when knowledge is being 're-valued' as central to curriculum concerns, subject English is being called to account. Literary Knowing and the Making of English Teachers puts long-standing debates about knowledge and knowing in English in dialogue with an investigation of how English teachers are made in the 21st century.
This book explores, for the first time, the role of literature in shaping English teachers' professional knowledge and identities by examining the impacts, in particular, of their own school teaching in their 'making'. The voices of early career English teachers feature throughout the work, in a series of vignettes providing reflective accounts of their professional learning. The authors bring a range of disciplinary expertise and standpoints to explore the complexity of knowledge and knowing in English. They ask: How do English teachers negotiate competing curriculum demands? How do they understand literary knowledge in a neoliberal context? What is core English knowledge for students, and what role should literature play in the contemporary curriculum? Drawing on a major longitudinal research project, they bring to light what English teachers see as central to their work, the ways they connect teaching with their disciplinary training, and how their understandings of literary practice are contested and reimagined in the classroom.
This innovative work is essential reading for scholars and postgraduate students in the fields of teacher education, English education, literary studies and curriculum studies.

Little Bosses Everywhere How the Pyramid Scheme Shaped America
Little Bosses Everywhere: How the Pyramid Scheme Shaped America by Bridget Read
English | May 6th, 2025 | ISBN: 0593443926 | 368 pages | True EPUB (Retail Copy) | 1.46 MB
A groundbreaking work of history and reportage that unveils the stranger-than-fiction world of multilevel marketing: a massive money-making scam and radical political conspiracy that has remade American society.
"Gripping and instructive . . . lucid and engaging . . . ridget Read sketches a vivid portrait of a cultish culture."-The Washington Post
Companies like Amway, Mary Kay, and Herbalife advertise the world's greatest opportunity: the chance to be your own boss via an enigmatic business model called multilevel marketing, or MLM. They offer a world of pink Cadillacs, white-columned mansions, tropical vacations, and-most precious of all-financial freedom. If, that is, you're willing to shell out for expensive products and recruit everyone you know to buy them, and if they recruit everyone they know, too, thus creating the "multiple levels" of MLM.
Overwhelming evidence suggests that most people lose money in multilevel marketing, and that many MLM companies are pyramid schemes. Yet the industry's origins, tied to right-wing ideologues like Ronald Reagan, have escaped public scrutiny. MLM has slithered in the wake of every economic crisis of the last century, from the Depression to the pandemic, ensnaring laid-off workers, stay-at-home moms, and teachers-anyone who has been left behind by rising inequality.
In Little Bosses Everywhere, journalist Bridget Read tells the gripping story of multilevel marketing in full for the first time, winding from sunny postwar California, where a failed salesman started a vitamin business, through the devoutly religious suburbs of Michigan, where the industry built its political influence, to stadium-size conventions where today's top sellers preach to die-hard recruits. MLM has enriched powerful people, like the DeVos and Van Andel families, Warren Buffett, and President Donald Trump, all while eroding public institutions and the social safety net, then profiting from the chaos. Along the way, Read delves into the stories of those devastated by the majority-female industry: a veteran in Florida searching for healing; a young mom in Texas struggling to feed her children; a waitress scraping by in Brooklyn.
A wild trip down an endless rabbit hole of greed and exploitation, Little Bosses Everywhere exposes multilevel marketing as American capitalism's stealthiest PR campaign, a cunning grift that has shaped nearly everything about how we live, and whose ultimate target is democracy itself.

Losing Streak How Tasmania was gamed by the gambling industry
James Boyce, "Losing Streak: How Tasmania was gamed by the gambling industry"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1863959106 | EPUB | pages: 258 | 0.9 mb
A jaw-dropping account of how one company came to own every poker machine in Tasmania - and the cost to democracy, the public purse and problem gamblers and their families.
The story begins with the toppling of a premier, and ends with David Walsh, the man behind MONA, taking an eccentric stand against pokie machines and the political status quo.
It is a story of broken politics and back-room deals. It shows how giving one company the licence to all the poker machines in the most disadvantaged state in the country has led to several hundred million dollars of profits (mainly from problem gamblers) being diverted from public use, through a series of questionable and poorly understood deals.
Losing Streak is a meticulous, compelling case study in governance failure, which has implications for pokies reform throughout Australia.

Lost Voices Central Asian Women Confronting Transition
Yvonne Corcoran-Nantes, "Lost Voices: Central Asian Women Confronting Transition"
English | 2005 | ISBN: 1842775375 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 0.5 mb
In 1991 the collapse of the Communist Party and the dissolution of the Soviet Union launched the republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan into an unexpected self-declared independence and a precarious, uncertain future. Emerging from almost seventy-five years of Soviet tutelage all three republics embarked on a process of radical change. Central Asian women's lives have been profoundly affected during the huge upheavals of sovietization in the 1920s and democratisation in the 1990s, but their experiences have gone unresearched and undocumented. If Central Asia was generally considered to be the forgotten world of the Soviet Union, Central Asian women constitute the 'lost voices' of Central Asia.
Yvonne Corcoran-Nantes offers a timely analysis into the lives of Muslim women during the Soviet era, and considers the impact of the shift from Soviet communism to Western capitalist ideals and its impact on gender relations in the region. The uneasy synthesis between socialism and Islam under the Soviet regime offered many women considerable status and personal freedom in public life but these gains have been rapidly eroded in the process of 'democratization'. Opportunities for women have entered into serious decline in terms of employment, education and socio-political status. Unlike many commentators, she offers a convincing argument that the main threat to the socio-political status of women in Central Asia is not Islamic fundamentalism, but the imposition of free market principles and Western 'liberal democratic' ideals. Woven into the text is a also subtle and nuanced analysis of the ways in which Central Asian women negotiate feminism, whether ushered in by Soviet women during sovietization, or by western NGOs in the region today.
As a special consultant to UNESCAP, the author was one of the first researchers to undertake substantial research in the republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the post-independence period and this book is based on her interviews with women from the region from all sections of Central Asian society.

Lovers and Others
Tom Lowenstein, "Lovers and Others"
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1925556603 | EPUB | pages: 236 | 3.7 mb
This candidly written memoir, enlivened by the author's impish sense of humour, narrates the way in which, by chance and circumstance, Tom Lowenstein placed his career at the service of the Australian art world. The book describes Lowenstein's numerous David and Goliath battles with the Australian Government and the Australian Tax Office for a greater understanding and fairer treatment of the unique set of circumstances and numerous challenges faced by the country's creative sectors.
Lowenstein's interactions with his colourful and gregarious clients took him frequently out of the comfort of the corporate environment into the artists' homes and studios. The personalities of Charles Blackman, Colin Lanceley, Margaret Olley, John Olsen, Garry Shead, Tim Storrier, and many other luminaries of the art world are vividly brought out with unique insights and unexpected angles.
The book is richly illustrated with photographs from Lowenstein's personal archives documenting his long-standing friendships and reflecting its heady mixture of accounting, art, and wine.
