Allerdings stellten sie auch keine völlige Neuheit in der Kriegsführung dar, zumindest nicht in den ersten Monaten des Ersten Weltkriegs. Während Flugzeuge noch nie zuvor über dem Kriegsschauplatz aufgetaucht waren, waren andere Luftfahrzeuge bereits seit Jahrzehnten im Einsatz, und Ballons hatten Soldaten über Jahrhunderte hinweg über die Landschaft befördert, um einen hohen Beobachtungspunkt zu bieten, der den meisten geologischen Merkmalen überlegen war. Jeder Fortschritt löste eine Gegenmaßnahme aus, da beide Seiten in einem tödlichen, gnadenlosen Umfeld um die Vorherrschaft strebten, in der echte Fortschritte in Ausrüstung und Taktik mit Überleben belohnt und schlechte Ideen mit dem Tod bestraft wurden. Schon bald schwirrten relativ starke, schwer bewaffnete Flugzeuge durch den Himmel über dem vom Kampf gezeichneten Europa, rissen sich gegenseitig mit wütenden Maschinengewehrfeuerböen auseinander und ließen viele der gepriesenen Luftschiffe brennend zu Boden stürzen. Die neue Ära der Kampfflugzeuge brach auf dramatische Weise an, erhob erfolgreiche Piloten zu Prominenten oder Helden und legte den Grundstein für das enorme Potenzial der Luftwaffe, ihre nächste logische Erweiterung im Zweiten Weltkrieg und darüber hinaus zu erreichen. Als der Zweite Weltkrieg begann, sah das Kampfflugzeug ganz anders aus als die speziell gebauten Flugzeugjagdmaschinen von 1917 und 1918. Obwohl Propeller immer noch als Antriebskraft dienten, konnten diese Flugzeuge dank der stark erhöhten Motorleistung mit Geschwindigkeiten von 200 Meilen pro Stunde, 300 Meilen pro Stunde oder sogar über 400 Meilen pro Stunde im Vollgas durch den Himmel rasen. Die Diensthöchstgrenzen stiegen auf 25.000 Fuß, 30.000 Fuß oder mehr, Höhen, die für die Flieger des Ersten Weltkriegs undenkbar waren.
