Maschinengewehre hatten sich von schweren, unhandlichen Geräten mit aufwendigen Wasserkühlungssystemen zu tragbaren, magazingespeisten Ein-Mann-Geräten wie der Chauchat, der Lewis Gun und der M1918 BAR entwickelt. Hinzu kamen Flammenwerfer, Handgranaten, Zeppeline, Beobachtungsballons, Giftgas und andere Verbesserungen oder Erfindungen, die das Gesicht der Kriegsführung revolutionierten.

Diese technologischen Entwicklungen führten zu einem Ungleichgewicht. Vor der Einführung des tragbaren leichten Maschinengewehrs (in der zweiten Kriegshälfte), ganz zu schweigen von den Panzern (die ebenfalls erst spät in den Kampf eingriffen), überstieg die defensive Feuerkraft bei weitem die offensive Fähigkeit. Massive Artilleriebatterien, schwere Maschinengewehre, Stacheldrahtverhaue und verwirrende Befestigungen bedeuteten, dass die Einnahme von Boden nur unter unglaublichen Kosten möglich war. Dies führte zu der (etwas ungerechtfertigten) Kritik an den Generälen des Ersten Weltkriegs, ihre Soldaten seien "von Eseln geführte Löwen".
Es erübrigt sich zu erwähnen, dass der Erste Weltkrieg zu einem unglücklichen Zeitpunkt für diejenigen begann, die in ihm kämpfen wollten. Nach einer anfänglichen Periode relativ schneller Manöver, in der die deutschen Truppen, die durch Belgien vorstießen, und die französischen und britischen Truppen, die versuchten, sie aufzuhalten, eine endlose Reihe erfolgloser Flankenbewegungen durchführten, die die Linien bis zum Meer ausdehnten, kam es natürlich zu einer Pattsituation. Die berüchtigten Schützengräben schlängelten sich bald durch die französische und belgische Landschaft und bildeten ein im Grunde genommen sinnloses statisches Schlachthaus, dessen unheilvolle Erinnerung bis heute anhält.
Wenn Grabenkämpfe während des Krieges unvermeidlich waren, dann nur, weil die Ereignisse, die zur ersten Marneschlacht führten, ganz anders verliefen. Während sich die Armeen zu Beginn des Krieges schnell durch das Land bewegten, entwickelte sich die Erste Marneschlacht zu einem blutigen Gefecht, das zum Bau von Schützengräben führte, nachdem sich die Deutschen zurückgezogen hatten und in ihrem Streben nach Paris aufgehalten wurden. Als sich die Schlacht in einen Grabenkrieg verwandelte, glaubten einige Deutsche, sie hätten die Oberhand, da sie französisches Territorium besetzten, aber mit weniger Soldaten als die alliierten Nationen zusammen und mit weniger Ressourcen und Vorräten war es möglicherweise nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sie schließlich besiegt würden. Der Befehlshaber der deutschen Armeen, General Helmuth von Moltke, soll unmittelbar nach der ersten Marneschlacht zu Kaiser Wilhelm II. gesagt haben: "Majestät, wir haben den Krieg verloren. Winston Churchill selbst bezog sich später auf diese Anekdote und schrieb: "Ob General von Moltke tatsächlich zum Kaiser sagte: 'Majestät, wir haben den Krieg verloren', wissen wir nicht.
