No século XXI, a maior parte das pessoas associa a ideia da possessão de uma pessoa ou de um local por uma entidade sobrenatural malévola ao mundo medieval e, em particular, à Igreja Católica, mas a verdade é consideravelmente mais estranha. Praticamente todas as culturas humanas que alguma vez existiram falaram de possessão e de exorcismo, um rito ou ritual utilizado para libertar uma pessoa ou um local da possessão. Os termos usados para descrever o processo de possessão e as entidades que se pensa serem responsáveis mudaram ao longo da história, mas a teoria central não mudou. Em certas circunstâncias, diz-se que uma pessoa, um lugar ou um objeto podem ser habitados por uma entidade que vem de outro lugar. O resultado é geralmente negativo e, por vezes, até fatal. O único remédio eficaz é o exorcismo, a expulsão da entidade envolvida para o local de onde veio.

Alguns ramos da psicologia moderna sugerem que a possessão é simplesmente uma forma de doença mental e que todos estes casos podem ser explicados em termos psicológicos. A situação tornou-se tão grave que, em 1990, um grupo de padres católicos romanos formou a Associação Internacional de Exorcistas (IAE). Este grupo pressionou o Vaticano a reconhecer o aumento de casos de possessão demoníaca e, em 2004, a Congregação para a Doutrina da Fé do Vaticano pediu a todas as dioceses católicas que nomeassem um exorcista com formação. É muito difícil obter números exactos (a Igreja Católica, por exemplo, não publica estatísticas oficiais sobre o número de exorcismos realizados pelos seus sacerdotes). Esses são números surpreendentes em uma nação moderna, industrializada e avançada. Algumas pessoas afirmam que a crença em demônios e possessão demoníaca nunca foi tão alta.
Naturalmente, esta crença crescente na possessão demoníaca também levou a um aumento do número de exorcismos que os padres e outros são chamados a realizar. Mais uma vez, não estão disponíveis números precisos, mas um exorcista de alto nível na América, o Padre Vincent Lampert, o exorcista da Arquidiocese de Indianápolis, disse a um repórter em outubro de 2018 que tinha recebido mais de 1.700 pedidos de exorcismos até à data desse ano, o número mais elevado que alguma vez tinha experimentado. Outros padres católicos treinados em ritos de exorcismo na América do Norte disseram que este aspeto do seu ministério se tornou tão avassalador que mal conseguem lidar com os pedidos de exorcismos.
