There are hundreds of textbooks that cover the complicated mathematics of the Fourier transform but no materials that explain its most basic principles. After many years working in signal and image processing, I have discovered that simple explanations are often overlooked. This course is targeted towards individuals who may have little experience in the area but have a desire to understand how things work.

This course will provide an introduction to the Fourier transform. The first section is a review of the mathematics core to understanding Fourier integrals. We will review trigonometric functions, derivatives, integrals, and power series - both exponential and complex exponential. The course will not focus on complicated details and will instead concentrate on the basic skills required.

The second section will begin to introduce Integral Fourier transform. We will dive into the properties of Fourier transform as well as their application to engineering and communication challenges. Here, we will cover convolution, cross-correlation, modulation, demodulation, and more.

The goal of the class is to provide fundamental knowledge that can be applied to the analysis of linear systems, filtering, sampling, and some of the more advanced topics in signal processing. The course includes slides, two problem sets, and their solutions in an Adobe Acrobat file.

This class features a fun and easy way to make quilted bowls in a variety of shapes and sizes using all your favorite fabrics and easy machine quilting. You'll want to make tons for yourself and even more to give away as gifts. This is a fun project for any skill level!

Using heavy stabilizer, some batting and fabric scraps, you can create your own one-of-a-kind round, square or oval vessel.

Instructor Heather Thomas will review how to layer the base of the bowl and the process of measuring and cutting the wedges that will be used to form the bowl. Once that is complete, she will go over a variety of ways to add decorative fabric layers.

You can quilt the fabric bowl with simple or complex designs. Heather will show how to manipulate the bowl under the foot of your machine for the best quilting results.

Finally she will demonstrate how to embellish your bowl with decorative edges, from couched fibers to hand beading.

Chapter 1: Complementary Palette:
Learn how color moves by reducing your palette to two simple complementary colors. You will learn invaluable lessons of how colors "cross" from one side of the color wheel to the other, and how important that transition is. These principles can be applied to more complex palettes.

Chapter 2: Color Temperature: Warm vs. Cool
The mother of color theories. If you don't know how color temperature works, you likely won't get reliable color in your art. This chapter breaks down the essentials of how warm moves to cool (and vice versa) through photo studies and painted studies.

Chapter 4: Color Vibrations
Oftentimes we have to deal with elements that appear to have solid local colors. A red apple, for instance. But how does nature actually treat "flat" colors? This chapter will give you important models for understanding how to keep colors active and interesting, yet still reading as simple hues.

Chapter 5: Color Palettes
Now that we have a command of color theory and practice, we can use it to apply all sorts of different palettes. We began this class with a simple complementary palette, but now we have access to much more! We'll look at how different palettes affect the mood of a piece, as well as how you might pair certain palettes with certain lighting conditions.

Chapter 6: How To Study
Watching a painting class is one thing, but we need to instill good practice habits in order for you to take this information and allow it to flourish over time, and in your own daily/weekly/monthly practice. This chapter will suggest simple ideas for practice, specifically targeting all the information from Chapters 1-5.

Note: Adobe Photoshop will be used in the videos, but the lessons are applicable to every piece of digital painting software. The color theories themselves are fully applicable to traditional media too - though the demonstrations are more targeted to digital painters.
