Dezenas de milhões de projécteis de artilharia e incontáveis centenas de milhões de balas de espingarda e de metralhadora foram disparados num conflito que demonstrou a capacidade dos homens para se matarem uns aos outros a uma escala sem precedentes e, como sempre, uma guerra deste tipo trouxe inovações tecnológicas a um ritmo que fez com que o boom da Revolução Industrial parecesse estagnado.

Um dos mais importantes avanços na tecnologia militar associados à Primeira Guerra Mundial, e certamente aquele que continua a captar a imaginação do público, foi a introdução de uma máquina de guerra que veio a dominar a face das batalhas terrestres durante a maior parte do século XX: o tanque. Como conceito, não era revolucionário; de facto, remetia para a antiguidade clássica e para a Idade Média, como os aríetes cobertos e os testudos que tinham feito aparições frequentes nos antigos campos de batalha. Essencialmente, foi concebido para resolver o antigo problema de proteger a infantaria dos projécteis inimigos, mantendo a sua mobilidade.
O desenvolvimento da artilharia moderna e das metralhadoras, bem como o impasse gerado pelas fortes fortificações e entrincheiramentos, tinham dificultado a mobilidade da infantaria e da cavalaria, deixando-as também totalmente vulneráveis ao poder de fogo defensivo. Uma vez que eram incapazes de responder da mesma forma, o tanque foi concebido para colmatar essa lacuna. A blindagem do tanque, suficientemente espessa para resistir à fragmentação lateral dos projécteis explosivos (embora não aos ataques diretos), também o tornava virtualmente invulnerável ao fogo das espingardas e metralhadoras inimigas, e o seu grande piso significava que podia transpor trincheiras que, no mínimo, teriam atrasado substancialmente a infantaria. Quanto aos emaranhados de arame farpado e aos obstáculos que atrasavam gravemente a infantaria e a expunham ao fogo inimigo, os tanques podiam simplesmente atravessá-los.
Antes da Primeira Guerra Mundial, vários exércitos haviam experimentado o conceito de tanque, mas os avanços nas técnicas metalúrgicas (que permitiram a construção de uma blindagem sólida e relativamente leve) e na engenharia mecânica (que permitiram a construção de um motor potente capaz de impulsionar tal massa) tornaram finalmente possível o seu desenvolvimento e utilização, bem como o desenvolvimento de lagartas (inicialmente para utilização agrícola em tractores).
