Os moabitas e os edomitas eram apenas dois dos muitos grupos cananeus com os quais os hebreus lidaram, muitas vezes de forma violenta, mas havia dezenas de outros grupos cananeus, a maioria dos quais era identificada através dos nomes das respectivas cidades.

De facto, antes de os hebreus estabelecerem um reino e antes de os fenícios colonizarem grande parte do Mediterrâneo, os cananeus foram o grupo mais importante do Levante durante grande parte da Idade do Bronze e até ao início da Idade do Ferro. Embora os cananeus nunca tenham criado um estado-nação ou reino unificado, a sua importância no antigo Médio Oriente não pode ser subestimada. Foi, pelo menos em parte, devido ao facto de os cananeus não terem conseguido resistir aos seus vizinhos maiores e mais poderosos que a média das pessoas hoje em dia sabe muito pouco sobre a sua história, mas os estudos modernos revelaram que desenvolveram uma religião única que influenciou os povos não cananeus e continuou a ser praticada de alguma forma séculos depois de os cananeus terem deixado de ser um povo identificável. Além disso, durante o auge da Idade do Bronze, os cananeus forneceram recursos importantes aos impérios egípcio e hitita e desempenharam um papel fundamental no jogo geopolítico de xadrez entre estes dois reinos. É evidente que os cananeus também contribuíram para a criação do Reino de Israel, uma vez que as batalhas que perderam contra os hebreus constituíram a base do reino judaico.
Atualmente, o termo "filisteu" é frequentemente utilizado como um eufemismo para designar uma pessoa particularmente rude, sem educação, ignorante e possivelmente violenta. Outros talvez conheçam os filisteus da história bíblica de David e Golias, uma vez que o "gigante" não só era muito maior do que David, como também era um líder filisteu que comandava um grande número de homens.
Como muitos indivíduos e impérios dessa região, a perceção negativa da antiga cultura assíria foi transmitida através de relatos bíblicos e, independentemente da exatidão dos relatos bíblicos de certos acontecimentos, os assírios desempenharam certamente o papel de adversários dos israelitas. De facto, a Assíria (Sinar na Bíblia) e os assírios desempenham um papel importante em vários livros do Antigo Testamento e são mencionados pela primeira vez no livro do Génesis: "E o princípio do seu reino foi Babel e Ereque, e Acade e Calné, na terra de Sinar. Daquela terra saiu Assur e edificou Nínive, a cidade de Reobote e Calá" (Gen. 10: 10-11). (Gen. 10: 10-11).
Embora os relatos bíblicos sobre os assírios estejam entre os mais interessantes e sejam muitas vezes corroborados por outras fontes históricas, os assírios eram muito mais do que simples inimigos dos israelitas e bandidos brutais. A investigação histórica sobre a antiga cultura assíria revela que, apesar de terem sido os maiores guerreiros do seu tempo, eram também altamente letrados, diplomáticos e excelentes comerciantes que registaram a sua história, rituais religiosos e crenças com grande pormenor. Os assírios, tal como os seus outros vizinhos da Mesopotâmia, eram letrados e desenvolveram o seu próprio dialeto da língua acádia, que utilizaram para escrever milhares de documentos em escrita cuneiforme (Kuhrt 2010, 1:84)
