De hecho, sólo el inesperado avance de las fuerzas soviéticas desde el este puso fin rápidamente a la lucha y vio cómo la república polaca volvía a dividirse tras sólo 20 años de independencia. No obstante, la campaña que dio comienzo a la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue una sangrienta señal de lo que estaba por venir, ya que el conflicto se extendió por todo el mundo.
Sin embargo, hoy en día se pasa por alto el hecho de que, a medida que el poder de la Alemania nazi crecía de forma alarmante durante la década de 1930, los franceses buscaron medios para defender su territorio de la creciente amenaza del Reich de los Mil Años. Como artífices de las medidas más punitivas del Tratado de Versalles tras la Primera Guerra Mundial, Francia era un objetivo natural de las represalias teutonas, por lo que la Línea Maginot, una serie de puntos fuertes y fortificaciones interconectadas que recorrían gran parte de la frontera oriental francesa, ayudó a disipar los temores franceses de invasión.

"The so-called "pinched disk" model of the Mandelbrot set is due to A. Douady, J. H. Hubbard and W. P. Thurston. It can be described in the language of geodesic laminations. The combinatorial model is the quotient space of the unit disk under an equivalence relation that, loosely speaking, "pinches" the disk in the plane (whence the name of the model). The significance of the model lies in particular in the fact that this quotient is planar and therefore can be easily visualized. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC conjecture stating that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected. For parameter spaces of higher degree polynomials no combinatorial model is known. One possible reason may be that the higher degree analog of the MLC conjecture is known to be false. We investigate to which extent a geodesic lamination is determined by the location of its critical sets and when different choices of critical sets lead to essentially thesame lamination. This yields models of various parameter spaces of laminations similar to the "pinched disk" model of the Mandelbrot set"-

Lawyers, community leaders and academics are called on to assist in researching cases around restitution, land rights and customary law.
The chapters in this collection discuss legal cases and policy directions that have evolved since 1994. Some chapters analyze the increasing power of chiefs in the South African rural areas, while others suggest that the courts are giving support to popular rights over land and supporting local democratic processes. Contributors record significant pushback from groups that reject traditional authority. These political tensions are a central theme of the collection and thus serve as vital case studies in furthering our understanding of rights and restitution in South Africa.

La importancia crucial de la educación en China, preciada virtud inculcada a la población de todas las clases por el amado maestro y filósofo Confucio en el siglo VI a.C., generó una edad de oro literaria y artística sin precedentes y de larga duración. También dio lugar a una cornucopia de innovaciones transformadoras y tecnologías revolucionarias, sobre todo tras los albores de la Era Común. Además de la carretilla, el sismógrafo, la noria, la perforación profunda, los puentes colgantes y los timones de barco, entre otros innumerables artilugios que cambiaron vidas, los chinos desarrollaron lo que más tarde se denominó los "Cuatro Grandes Inventos de China". Uno de ellos no fue otro que la pólvora, desarrollada a más tardar en el siglo IX y utilizada con fines militares en el siglo XI. Su uso se extendió lentamente por el sur de Asia y Oriente Próximo antes de llegar a Europa a finales del siglo XIII.
Durante un tiempo fue una mera curiosidad, pero su poder destructivo y su potencial militar no tardarían en hacerse realidad. El primer registro de un cañón en Europa procede de un manuscrito escrito en 1326, que contiene una ilustración que muestra a un hombre armado con lo que parece una cerilla lenta encendiendo un objeto en forma de jarrón. Este cañón rudimentario se llamaba pot de fer en francés y vasi en italiano.
Mientras los ingenieros medievales desarrollaban nuevos tipos de cañones y explosivos capaces de destruir murallas y castillos, otros hacían posibles las primeras armas de mano. Las fuentes europeas mencionan por primera vez el uso generalizado de las handgonnes, como se las solía llamar, a finales del siglo XIV, precisamente cuando la pólvora se abarató. Se trataba de cañones metálicos cortos que se enganchaban en el extremo de unos arcos de madera que se podían llevar bajo el brazo, y cuya pólvora se encendía a través de un orificio con la mano libre. Aunque no eran terriblemente precisos y tenían un alcance menor y una cadencia de tiro más lenta que los arcos largos o las ballestas, tenían la ventaja de ser mejores capaces de atravesar armaduras que los arcos largos y las ballestas, y eran fáciles de fabricar y utilizar.
A finales del siglo XV, las armas de mano se habían convertido en una parte importante de los principales ejércitos, y las armas basadas en la pólvora seguirían siendo un elemento básico de la guerra durante todo el siglo XIX, rindiendo un homenaje mortal a uno de los inventos más importantes de la historia. Por supuesto, esto también traería consigo nuevas e innovadoras estrategias militares, y a algunas de las primeras personas que pensaron de forma innovadora se les atribuiría la creación de los primeros ejércitos modernos.
