Toda gran nación o imperio ha sufrido al menos una terrible derrota o desastre militar a lo largo de su historia, y el Imperio Romano, quizás el mayor imperio que jamás haya existido en el mundo occidental, no fue una excepción a esta regla. Aunque Roma sufrió derrotas y masacres a lo largo de su dilatada historia, ninguna de ellas fue tan perturbadora para el Imperio como la batalla del Bosque de Teutoburgo en el año 9 de nuestra era.
