Vladimir Jankélévitch lenkt in Von der Lüge den Blick auf die innere mentale Verfasstheit dessen, der sich zur Lüge ›entschließt‹, und versucht, der ›Subjektseite‹ der Lüge auf die Spur zu kommen. Unser Bewusstsein will das Polymorphe, das Missverständliche, das Uneingestehbare handhaben und erfindet etwas Glaubhaftes, Zweckmäßiges. Die Lüge ist die List der Schwachen, rettende Idee in Notwehrsituationen und gleichzeitig doch innere Flucht, das Verlassen des Postens, das Opium der geringsten Anstrengung. Es gibt nach Jankélévitch nur zwei Wege, mit der Lüge umzugehen: die unerwartete, schmerzhafte Aufrichtigkeit und das Verschmelzen der Lüge mit der Wahrheit bis zur Ununterscheidbarkeit. Einen Ausweg aus der Verstrickung des Lügners mit dem Belogenen hingegen weist nur die Ironie: Denn diese führe, als bonne conductrice, den Geist, unser Bewusstsein, zur Innerlichkeit, während die Lüge ihn ins Äußerliche ziehe. Jankélévitchs Überlegungen zur Lüge sind charakteristisch für seinen philosophischen Ansatz, der, obgleich in der Tradition Bergsons und Simmels stehend, doch eine ganz eigene Art von Lebensphilosophie darstellt.

Die Kritik der Vernunft, so heißt es in der Philosophie der symbolischen Formen, wird damit zur Kritik der Kultur.In den 1942 im Göteborger Exil veröffentlichten fünf Studien Zur Logik der Kulturwissenschaften unternimmt Cassirer eine genauere wissenschaftstheoretische Bestimmung des geisteswissenschaftlichen Feldes. Ausgangspunkt allen Kulturverstehens ist für ihn die Ausdruckswahrnehmung im Gegensatz zur Dingwahrnehmung in den exakten Wissenschaften. Die Kulturwissenschaften arbeiten nicht in erster Linie mit Natur- und Geschichtsbegriffen, sondern mit Form- und Stilbegriffen. Nicht die Individualität der Gesetze ist das Erkenntnisziel der Kulturwissenschaften, sondern die Totalität der Formen, in denen sich menschliches Leben vollzieht.In diesem für die im 20. Jahrhundert entstehenden Kulturwissenschaften fundamentalen Werk entwickelt Cassirer bereits präzise das Motiv seiner Anthropologie, das 1944 im Essay on Man (Philosophische Bibliothek Band 488) zur Entfaltung kommt.Im Anhang beigegeben ist der 1939 ebenfalls in Göteborg gehaltene Vortrag Naturalistische und humanistische Begründung der Kulturphilosophie.

Was versteht man eigentlich unter einem System? Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts war das keineswegs klar: Vom Weltsystem, der Verbindung der einzelnen Dingen, wie sie würcklich existiren (so ein zeitgenössisches Lexikon), über die schlichte Bedeutungsgleichheit mit Hypothese bis hin zu der Meinung, ein System sei einfach ein äußerlich geordneter Zusammenhang zum Beispiel der Lehren eines einzelnen Denkers, reichten die ganz unterschiedlichen, nebeneinander bestehenden Bedeutungen. Für Wolff, der sich nach seiner Vertreibung aus Preußen in einer sogenannten Marburger Nebenstunde mit dem Systembegriff beschäftigt, ist ein System dagegen nichts Äußerliches. Das System beruht vielmehr auf der Anwendung der richtigen Methode (paradigmatisch: die mathematische) und ist das notwendige Ergebnis methodischen Denkens. Dabei grenzt sich Wolff gegen die zur Zeit der Frühaufklärung hochgeschätzte Eklektik ab, wonach ein systematischer Philosoph nach eigenem freien Urteil aus früheren Lehren dasjenige auswähle, was wahr ist, und zu einem System verknüpfe. Wer richtig auswählen will, so Wolff, braucht jedoch einen Maßstab, um ein logisch kohärentes System überhaupt formulieren zu können. Dies ist die Voraussetzung für jeden Erkenntnisprozess und damit für wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt. Wolffs Systemidee, die er in seinen Werken vorführt und als Methode lehrte, erwies sich in der Folgezeit als enorm einflussreich und beendete schließlich die Karriere der Eklektik. Von Ausnahmen abgesehen wollte kein Philosoph mehr Eklektiker sein. Noch bei Kants Definition des Systems in der Kritik der reinen Vernunft steht ganz eindeutig Wolffs Systembegriff im Hintergrund.
