Surveying the work of real scientists as well as the products of more dubious minds, Russett has produced a learned yet immensely enjoyable chapter in the annals of human folly.

At the turn of the century science was successfully challenging the social authority of religion; scientists wielded a power no other group commanded. Unfortunately, as Russett demonstrates, in Victorian sexual science, empiricism tangled with prior belief, and scientists' delineation of the mental and physical differences between men and women was directed to show how and why women were inferior to men. These men were not necessarily misogynists. This was an unsettling time, when the social order was threatened by wars, fierce economic competition, racial and industrial conflict, and the failure of society to ameliorate poverty, vice, crime, illnesses. Just when men needed the psychic lift an adoring dependent woman could give, she was demanding the vote, higher education, and the opportunity to become a wage earner!
No other work has treated this provocative topic so completely, nor have the various scientific theories used to marshal evidence of women's inferiority been so thoroughly delineated and debunked. Erudite enough for scholars in the history of science, intellectual history, and the history of women, this book with its stylish presentation will also attract a large nonspecialist audience.

Obgleich die Sexualpädagogik der Vielfalt demgemäß Gegenstand kontroverser gesellschaftlicher Diskussion ist, fehlt in der öffentlichen Auseinandersetzung bislang die Berücksichtigung des grundgesetzlichen Rahmens, in den sie sich in der staatlichen Schule einzufügen hat. Insbesondere mangelt es an einer näheren Befassung mit der Frage, ob mit ihrer Einführung verfassungsrechtliche Grenzen überschritten werden. Dieser Befund ist den Beiträgen des vorliegenden Sammelbandes Anlass, sich der sexuellen Vielfalt als Gegenstand staatlicher Erziehung in der Schule zu widmen und aus dem Blickwinkel unterschiedlicher Disziplinen Grund und Rechtfertigung der schulischen Sexualpädagogik, die an sie zu stellenden Anforderungen sowie die ihr zu ziehenden pädagogischen und verfassungsrechtlichen Grenzen zu untersuchen. Ihr gemeinsames Augenmerk gilt hierbei der Frage, ob sich die Sexualpädagogik der Vielfalt nach Intention wie praktischer Ausgestaltung innerhalb der im Einzelnen zu entfaltenden Grenzen hält.Hervorgegangen sind die Abhandlungen aus Vorträgen, die 2015 in der Rechts- und Staatswissenschaftlichen Sektion der Görres-Gesellschaft zur Pflege der Wissenschaft auf deren Generalversammlung in Bonn gehalten worden sind.Sexual diversity education is controversially discussed in the public. However, what is lacking in the public discussion is a general framework at state schools where this education approach fits in. This analysis of the current situation inspired the authors of the contributions to this anthology to deal with sexual diversity as part of state education in schools and to analyse cause and justification of sex education in schools, the demands made on it and also where to draw clear lines in terms of pedagogical justification and constitutional law from the perspective of different disciplines. The authors turn their attention to the question whether sexual diversity education in terms of intention and practical action remains within the existing limits.

The lives of the former child soldiers were shaped not just by their personal ordeals but also, crucially, by the responses of their families, peers, and broader communities. Betancourt's study provides unparalleled insight into the long-term psychological and developmental effects of family separation, war, and exposure to violence. Shifting Sovereignties explores practical manifestations of sovereignty from antiquity to the Anthropocene. Taking a global-history perspective and centring Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, it destabilises overly neat theoretical notions of the concept. Shifting Sovereignties shows that, in practice, sovereignty is far from absolute, perpetual, indivisible, or supreme; rather it is fuzzy, compromised, fragmented, and layered. From these observations, the authors derive a historical conceptualisation which makes change and contingency core aspects of the understanding of sovereignty. Rather than understanding sovereignty as a characteristic of individual states, Mihatsch and Mulligan propose the notion of "sovereignty regimes": frameworks of legitimation enforced through mutual recognition. These regimes are created and managed by more or less institutionalised structures which embody what the authors call "system sovereignty." Sovereignty regimes and system sovereignty are, like sovereignty itself, continuously changing and contingent. This process of change forms the core of the book. Shifting Sovereignties thus contributes a practical, historical perspective on a concept which is foundational in political science, international relations, and international law.
