Using a wealth of data--linguistic, sociolinguistic, historical--he proposes that the "limited access model" of creole genesis is seriously flawed. That model maintains that plantation creole languages emerged because African slaves greatly outnumbered whites on colonial plantations. Having little access to the slaveholders' European languages, the slaves were forced to build a new language from what fragments they did acquire. Not so, says McWhorter, who posits that plantation creole originated in West African trade settlements, in interactions between white traders and slaves, some of whom were eventually transported overseas.The evidence that most New World creoles were imports traceable to West Africa strongly suggests that the well-established limited access model for plantation creole needs revision. In forcing a reexamination of this basic tenet, McWhorter's book will undoubtedly cause controversy. At the same time, it makes available a vast amount of data that will be a valuable resource for further explorations of genesis theory.

The lower altitude would also increase accuracy substantially. The trade-off was the increased danger of anti-aircraft fire. This was deemed worth the risk, and the devastation brought to the industry and population of the capital city was catastrophic. Der Gesichtspunkt der systematischen Handhabung der Problematik wird dahingehend erörtert, ob mittelbare Straftatfolgen bei der Bestimmung des Strafrahmens ("minder schwerer Fall"), auf der Ebene der rahmenausfüllenden Strafbemessung und/oder bei der Modifizierung der endgültig festzulegenden Strafe durch anschließende präventive Überlegungen berücksichtigt werden können. Die Autorin stellt fest, daß mittelbare Straftatfolgen letztlich auf allen drei Ebenen strafmildernd berücksichtigt werden können. Bezüglich der ersten beiden Varianten erfolgt eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage, ob für den Ausgleich von Schuld auch Gesichtspunkte von Bedeutung sein können, die keinen Einfluß auf das Maß des verschuldeten Unrechts oder das Maß der Vorwerfbarkeit des Täterhandels haben, was im Ergebnis bejaht wird. Hinsichtlich der mittelbaren Straftatfolgen, die Strafcharakter aufweisen, wird eine beliebige Strafmilderung vor dem Hintergrund von Art. 103 Abs. 3 GG ausgeschlossen.

In the seminar of the Dutch Singularity Theory project in 1982 and 1983, the second-named author gave a series of lectures on Mixed Hodge Structures and Singularities, accompanied by a set of hand-written notes. The publication of these notes was prevented by a revolution in the subject due to Morihiko Saito: the introduction of the theory of Mixed Hodge Modules around 1985. Understanding this theory was at the same time of great importance and very hard, due to the fact that it uni es many di erent theories which are quite complicated themselves: algebraic D-modules and perverse sheaves. The present book intends to provide a comprehensive text about Mixed Hodge Theory with a view towards Mixed Hodge Modules. The approach to Hodge theory for singular spaces is due to Navarro and his collaborators, whose results provide stronger vanishing results than Deligne's original theory. Navarro and Guill en also lled a gap in the proof that the weight ltration on the nearby cohomology is the right one. In that sense the present book corrects and completes the second-named author's thesis.
