What makes Methodist worship "Methodist" or "Wesleyan?" How do Methodists evaluate emerging forms of worship in light of their own liturgical heritage? Summers (1812-1882), Nolan B. Harmon (1892-1993), and James F. White (1932-2004). Exploring each one's contribution to the Methodist movement, it evaluates their continuing legacies as scholars and practitioners of Methodist worship. Importantly, the work of all these men occurred during times of cultural change, which gave rise to new ways of worship within the landscape of American Methodism. Addressing them in chronological order, this study shows how each figure enacted liturgical reform and renewal by drawing from the liturgical textual tradition inherited directly from John Wesley's Sunday Service of the Methodist in North America as well as the hymnody of Charles Wesley. It also demonstrates how they sought to inculturate the Wesleyan liturgical tradition in the midst of these significant changes.Evaluating historic and emerging trends in Methodist liturgical praxis, this is a book that will be of great interest to scholars of Methodism, the History of Religion, Liturgical Studies and Theology.

The purpose of this book is to describe the global properties of complete simply connected spaces that are non-positively curved in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov and to examine the structure of groups that act properly on such spaces by isometries. Thus the central objects of study are metric spaces in which every pair of points can be joined by an arc isometric to a compact interval of the real line and in which every triangle satisfies the CAT(O) inequality. This inequality encapsulates the concept of non-positive curvature in Riemannian geometry and allows one to reflect the same concept faithfully in a much wider setting - that of geodesic metric spaces. Because the CAT(O) condition captures the essence of non-positive curvature so well, spaces that satisfy this condition display many of the elegant features inherent in the geometry of non-positively curved manifolds. There is therefore a great deal to be said about the global structure of CAT(O) spaces, and also about the structure of groups that act on them by isometries - such is the theme of this book. 1 The origins of our study lie in the fundamental work of A. D. Alexandrov.

Metric theory has undergone a dramatic phase transition in the last decades when its focus moved from the foundations of real analysis to Riemannian geometry and algebraic topology, to the theory of infinite groups and probability theory.

The new wave began with seminal papers by Svarc and Milnor on the growth of groups and the spectacular proof of the rigidity of lattices by Mostow. This progress was followed by the creation of the asymptotic metric theory of infinite groups by Gromov.
The structural metric approach to the Riemannian category, tracing back to Cheeger's thesis, pivots around the notion of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between Riemannian manifolds. This distance organizes Riemannian manifolds of all possible topological types into a single connected moduli space, where convergence allows the collapse of dimension with unexpectedly rich geometry, as revealed in the work of Cheeger, Fukaya, Gromov and Perelman. Also, Gromov found metric structure within homotopy theory and thus introduced new invariants controlling combinatorial complexity of maps and spaces, such as the simplicial volume, which is responsible for degrees of maps between manifolds. During the same period, Banach spaces and probability theory underwent a geometric metamorphosis, stimulated by the Levy-Milman concentration phenomenon, encompassing the law of large numbers for metric spaces with measures and dimensions going to infinity.
The first stages of the new developments were presented in Gromov's course in Paris, which turned into the famous "Green Book" by Lafontaine and Pansu (1979). The present English translation of that work has been enriched and expanded with new material to reflect recent progress. Additionally, four appendices - by Gromov on Levy's inequality, by Pansu on "quasiconvex" domains, by Katz on systoles of Riemannian manifolds, and by Semmes overviewing analysis on metric spaces with measures - as well as an extensive bibliographyand index round out this unique and beautiful book.

Cis,cis-muconic acid receives increasing interest to be produced from renewables. Catabolic microbial pathways can be tailored to accumulate cis,cis-muconic acid from a range of aromatic compounds. A renewable, sustainable and under-valued resource for aromatics is lignin. In this work, using hydrothermal conversion, lignin was depolymerized into hydrolysates with up to 615 mM aromatic monomer content. Catechol-rich hydrolysates were generated for bioconversion with the previously developed cis,cis-muconic acid producers P. putida MA-9 and C. glutamicum MA-2, whereas hydrolysates were guaiacol-rich for Amycolatopsis sp. MA-2. When grown with glucose as a co-substrate, C. glutamicum MA-2 yielded 2.6 g L⁻¹ (100 % yield) cis,cis-muconic acid from catechol. Towards an even more sustainable process, glucose was then replaced by hemicellulose, a non-food renewable. Hemicellulose, a co-constituent of lignin in lignocellulose, was hydrothermally converted into a mixture of C₅ and C₆ sugars. As hemicellulose was mainly converted into xylose (91 % yield), C. glutamicum MA-2 was engineered to utilize this pentose. Fed-batch bioconversion on a catechol-rich Kraft lignin hydrolysate as well as a hemicellulose hydrolysate using C. glutamicum MA-4 yielded 4 g L⁻¹ muconic acids. As the developed process was non-competitive to feed and food, it is a promising starting point for future application in bio-based industrial settings.
