Hopeless, Starving, and Besieged; Israel's Forced Displacement of Palestinians in ...
"Hopeless, Starving, and Besieged"; Israel's Forced Displacement of Palestinians in Gaza
by Human Rights Watch
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9798887081779 | 176 Pages | True PDF | 12.9 MB
Israeli authorities have caused the massive, deliberate forced displacement of Palestinian civilians in Gaza since October 2023 and are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israeli evacuation orders, attacks on so-called safe zones, and arbitrary restrictions to humanitarian aid have caused enormous harm to Palestinian civilians. Contrary to claims by Israeli officials, the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza does not comply with the laws of war.
"Hopeless, Starving, and Besieged" examines how Israeli authorities' conduct has led to the displacement of 1.9 million Palestinians and the widespread destruction of much of Gaza over the last 13 months. The report is based on interviews with 39 displaced Palestinians in Gaza and analysis of Israel's evacuation system, including 184 evacuation orders, satellite imagery confirming the widespread destruction, and verified videos and photographs of attacks on designated safe zones and evacuation routes.
As the occupying power, Israel is obliged to ensure adequate facilities to accommodate displaced civilians, but the authorities have blocked all but a small fraction of the necessary humanitarian aid, water, electricity, and fuel from reaching civilians in need in Gaza. Israeli attacks have also rendered swathes of Gaza uninhabitable. Israel's military has intentionally demolished or severely damaged civilian infrastructure, including in areas its forces control.
Human Rights Watch calls on the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel's forced displacement in Gaza. The United States, Germany, and other countries should immediately suspend weapons transfers and military assistance to Israel. Continuing to provide arms to Israel risks complicity in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other grave human rights violations.

Hopped Up How Travel, Trade, and Taste Made Beer a Global Commodity
Hopped Up: How Travel, Trade, and Taste Made Beer a Global Commodity by Jeffrey M. Pilcher
English | September 30, 2024 | ISBN: 0197676049 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 20.7 MB
A lively history of beer and brewing traditions as globally connected commodities created through borrowing and exchange from precapitalist times to the present.
Virtually every country has a bestselling or iconic national beer brand: from Budweiser in the United States and Corona in Mexico, to Tsingtao in China and Heineken in Holland. Yet, with the sole exception of Ireland's Guinness, every label represents the same style: light, crisp, clear, Pilsner lager. The global spread of lager can be told as a story of Western cultural imperialism: a European product travels through merchants, migrants, and imperialists to upend local patterns and transform faraway consumers' tastes. But this modern beer is just as much a product of globalization, invented and reinvented around the world. While distinctive craft beers such as London Porter, India Pale Ale, and Belgian sour ales have been revived by aficionados over the past half-century, they too have globalized through the same circuits of trade, migration, and knowledge that carried lager.
Here eminent food historian Jeffrey M. Pilcher narrates the brewing traditions and contemporary production of beer across Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, and Latin America-from the fermented beverages of precapitalist societies to the present. Over the centuries, he shows, the exchange of technological advances in brewing contributed to regional divergences and convergences in beer varieties, but always in tandem with other social and cultural developments. Unique local products, often homebrewed by women, were transformed into homogenous global commodities as giant brewing factories exported their beers using new refrigeration technology, railroads, and steamships. Industrial food processing helped to recast strong flavors as a source of potential contamination, turning lager, with its clean, fresh taste, into a symbol of hygiene and civilization. Local elites demonstrated their modernity and sophistication by opting for chilled lagers over traditional beverages. These beers became so standardized that most consumers could not tell the difference between them, leading to cutthroat competition that bankrupted countless firms. Over the past half-century, the global concentration of the brewing industry has spawned a reaction among those seeking to return brewing to the local, artisanal, and communitarian roots of the premodern alehouse, but microbrewers have often been driven by the same capitalist quest for profit and expansion.
Based on a wealth of multinational archives and industry publications, Hopped Up explores not only how humans have made beer but also how consumers-from nobility and clergy in the past to those raising a pint today-have used beer to make meaning in their lives.

House of Fury
House of Fury by Evelio Rosero, translated by Victor Meadowcroft
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 0811234584 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 1.6 MB
A lyrical yet unforgettably intense portrait of Colombian society by one of the country's most renowned novelists.
Taking place entirely on a single evening―Friday, April 10, 1970―in a large Bogotá mansion, House of Fury tells a hair-raising story. Nacho Caiciedo, a magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice, lives with his wife Alma and their six grown daughters. The Caiciedos have planned an enormous celebration in their home. But before the party has even started, the family is shocked by two pieces of news: their teenage daughter Italia is pregnant, and Alma's prodigal brother Jesús is expected at any moment. Guests from all levels of Bogotá society arrive, two earthquakes strike, and the party descends into debauchery; Nacho, out in the city streets, searching for Italia, is kidnapped by a ragtag militia, and its troops eventually invade the party and bring more chaos.
House of Fury begins as a black comedy and unravels into a grim portent of the conflict that would rage across Colombia for fifty years. As in Rosero's previous novels, House of Fury is an indelible, fantastical work that with its unforgettable characters and unflinching, poetic, and humane voice, brings to light Colombia's violent history.

Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta
George A. Said-Zammit, "Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta "
English | ISBN: 0367439042 | 2020 | 272 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta is a study concerned with a wide spectrum of early modern dwellings in Malta, ranging from palazzi and affluent residences to peasant dwellings, troglodyte houses, and hovels. The multifaceted approach adopted in this book allows houses and domestic networks to be studied not only in terms of architecture and construction materials, but also as places of human habitation where house dwellers act, react and interact in different contexts and circumstances. Dwellings are places that permit different social and economic activities, whilst providing shelter and security to the household members. Through the available sources, the houses of Hospitaller Malta are analysed in terms of their spatial properties and how they generate privacy, interaction and communication, identity, accessibility, security, visibility, movement and encounters, and, equally important, how domestic space relates to gender roles, status, and class. This work, therefore, seeks to reach a deep and nuanced understanding of domestic space and how it relates to the islands' history and the development of their society during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Houses of Ravicka
Houses of Ravicka by Renee Gladman
English | November 1, 2017 | ISBN: 0997366664 | True EPUB | 152 pages | 1.97 MB
"More Kafka than Kafka, Renee Gladman's achievement ranks alongside many of Borges' in its creation of a fantastical landscape with deep psychological impact." -Jeff VanderMeer
Since 2010 writer and artist Renee Gladman has placed fantastic and philosophical stories in the invented city-state of Ravicka, a Ruritanian everyplace with its own gestural language, poetic architecture, and inexplicable physics. As Ravicka has grown, so has Gladman's project, spilling out from her fiction-Event Factory, The Ravickians, and Ana Patova Crosses a Bridge-into her nonfiction (Calamities) and even visual art (Prose Architectures). The result is a project unlike any other in American letters today, a fictional world that spans not only multiple books but different genres, even different art forms.
In Houses of Ravicka, the city's comptroller, author of Regulating the Book of Regulations, seems to have lost a house. It is not where it's supposed to be, though an invisible house on the far side of town, which corresponds to the missing house, remains appropriately invisible. Inside the invisible house, a nameless Ravickian considers how she came to the life she is living, and investigates the deep history of Ravicka-that mysterious city-country born of Renee Gladman's philosophical, funny, audacious, extraordinary imagination.

How Chiefs Became Kings Divine Kingship and the Rise of Archaic States in Ancient ...
How Chiefs Became Kings: Divine Kingship and the Rise of Archaic States in Ancient Hawai'i by Patrick Vinton Kirch
English | December 2, 2010 | ISBN: 0520267257, 0520303393 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 1.98 MB
In How Chiefs Became Kings, Patrick Vinton Kirch addresses a central problem in anthropological archaeology: the emergence of "archaic states" whose distinctive feature was divine kingship. Kirch takes as his focus the Hawaiian archipelago, commonly regarded as the archetype of a complex chiefdom. Integrating anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, traditional history, and theory, and drawing on significant contributions from his own four decades of research, Kirch argues that Hawaiian polities had become states before the time of Captain Cook's voyage (1778-1779).
The status of most archaic states is inferred from the archaeological record. But Kirch shows that because Hawai`i's kingdoms were established relatively recently, they could be observed and recorded by Cook and other European voyagers. Substantive and provocative, this book makes a major contribution to the literature of precontact Hawai`i and illuminates Hawai`i's importance in the global theory and literature about divine kingship, archaic states, and sociopolitical evolution.

How Digital Social Life Matters New Frames for Social and Cultural Analysis
How Digital Social Life Matters: New Frames for Social and Cultural Analysis
by David Toews
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032045302 | 183 Pages | True PDF | 1.3 MB
Focusing on two concepts that were central to modernism and continue to be important, albeit in different ways, this book explores the nature of the simple and the complex, and the relationship that exists between them. With attention to trends in big data and digital media, society, politics, and culture, and the shift from groups towards networks in social life, it considers how the simple is transformed by the new realities of the internet-powered, global society, and what its role might be in helping us to understand them, both from the point of view of methods in the social sciences and humanities, and in life. Rejecting the positivist idea that the simple remains a static background against which the open-ended complexity of our world continues to expand, the author contends that the growth in complexity is mirrored in the 'relativization of simplicity', a phenomenon that is highlighted by gradual social changes that the era of digital media is now making apparent.
Through a series of questions raised by our new digital lives, How Digital Social Life Matters argues for significant changes in how we see the world. Focussing on the relationship between theory and methods, it offers a critical phenomenology of experiences associated with the network society and networked individualism in an era of 'big data'. It uses an examination of the concept and phenomenon of the simple, unpacking its new dynamics, its new meanings and its new depth, as a way of demonstrating the need for new conceptions of the complex in such contexts as reality, the universe, and the cosmos. As such, it will appeal to social theorists, communication scholars, and philosophers with interests in the fields of relational sociology, digital media, and object-oriented ontology. It also engages more broadly with scholars with a sociologically-informed interest in reimagining the social roles of politics, science, nature, media, globalization, the environment, and social interaction for our new digital era.

How Good It Is I Have No Fear of Dying Lieutenant Yulia Mykytenko's Fight for Ukraine
Lara Marlowe, "How Good It Is I Have No Fear of Dying: Lieutenant Yulia Mykytenko's Fight for Ukraine"
English | ISBN: 168589187X | 2025 | 312 pages | EPUB | 837 KB
Publishing on the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine: The gripping, heartrending story, told in her own words, of a formidable 29-year-old woman serving as a commander on the front lines of the War in Ukraine - and an intimate, hair-raising look at modern warfare . . .
Lieutenant Yulia Mykytenko, a commander in the Ukrainian army serving on the front line of battle, embodies her country's resistance to the Russian invasion. When her father self-immolated on Maidan Square in central Kyiv in an act of protest, she held a press conference to explain to journalists that he acted "in sound mind." Later, in battle on the front line, she would learn via radio-phone that her husband had been killed nearby.
In 2023, veteran war correspondent Lara Marlowe met Mykytenko while covering the war, and found her to be "one of the most extraordinary people I have interviewed in 42 years of journalism." From their months of conversations, Marlowe stitched together Mykytenko's accounts into a riveting revelation of what modern warfare is really like.
Told entirely in Mykytenko's first person voice, it is a story of cluster bombs and ballistic missiles. Mykytenko has most recently commanded a drone unit, and the scenes of launching drone attacks, and of being attacked by drones, are electrifying and harrowing. At the same time there are vestiges of WWII: trench warfare, no-man's lands seeded with mines, even chemical weapons.
The result is an urgent story of a besieged nation, a vivid look at the changing face of warfare, and the stirring tale of an inspirational woman fighting for her country's survival.

How Humans Learn The Science and Stories behind Effective College Teaching
Joshua R. Eyler, "How Humans Learn: The Science and Stories behind Effective College Teaching "
English | ISBN: 1946684643 | 2018 | 293 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Even on good days, teaching is a challenging profession. One way to make the job of college instructors easier, however, is to know more about the ways students learn. How Humans Learn aims to do just that by peering behind the curtain and surveying research in fields as diverse as developmental psychology, anthropology, and cognitive neuroscience for insight into the science behind learning.
The result is a story that ranges from investigations of the evolutionary record to studies of infants discovering the world for the first time, and from a look into how our brains respond to fear to a reckoning with the importance of gestures and language. Joshua R. Eyler identifies five broad themes running through recent scientific inquiry-curiosity, sociality, emotion, authenticity, and failure-devoting a chapter to each and providing practical takeaways for busy teachers. He also interviews and observes college instructors across the country, placing theoretical insight in dialogue with classroom experience.

How Nations Escape Poverty Vietnam, Poland, and the Origins of Prosperity
How Nations Escape Poverty: Vietnam, Poland, and the Origins of Prosperity
by Rainer Zitelmann
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1641773952 | 240 Pages | ePUB | 1.66 MB
A rigorous defense of free markets and open enterprise in the tradition of Adam Smith.
During the 20th century, Vietnam and Poland were both victims not only of devastating wars, but also of socialist planned economies that destroyed whatever war hadn't already. In 1990, Vietnam was still one of the poorest countries in the world, while Poland was one of the poorest in Europe. But in the three decades since then, both countries have drastically improved their citizens' standards of living and escaped the vicious cycle of national poverty.
In this book Rainer Zitelmann identifies the reasons behind the sensational growth of both nations' economies, drawing out the lessons that other countries can learn from these two success stories. To explain the source of their success, he returns to Adam Smith's 1776 treatise, The Wealth of Nations: the only way to overcome poverty is through economic growth, Smith wrote, and economic freedom is the crucial prerequisite from such growth.
Developments over the past 250 years have proved Smith right. The market economy has led to a global decline in poverty unparalleled in human history. Compare this to the fifty years of "development aid" in Africa that have only entrenched the status quo, and it is clear which approach yields superior results. Despite these strides, almost ten percent of the world's population still lives in extreme poverty. So, what measures actually help to alleviate poverty today? Through a wealth of data and stories from the everyday lives of Polish and Vietnamese people who experienced reforms, Zitelmann demonstrates the persistent relevance of Smith's ideas to economic flourishing in the 21st century.

How Our Departed Ones Live The Experience of the Orthodox Church
How Our Departed Ones Live: The Experience of the Orthodox Church By Monk Mitrophan
2015 | 452 Pages | ISBN: 088465401X | EPUB | 1 MB
"Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Conqueror of death, and, consequently, of the death of our departed ones. Let us say to them in Him, not 'Farewell,' but 'Until we meet again, beloved spouse, good parents, dear brother or sister. Until we meet again!'"While many are now abandoning traditional religious practice, none the less, the reality of death and questions regarding the afterlife remain at the forefront of spiritual consciousness. How Our Departed Ones Live is the answer to those who seek the truth as expressed through the experience of the Orthodox Church. This comprehensive book discusses the source of death and mortality, the inner connection and mutual relationship between the living and the departed, intercession by the living for the departed, and life beyond the grave. It will comfort the grieving and inspire all Christians to strengthen their resolve as they seek first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness.

How Painting Happens (and Why it Matters)
How Painting Happens (and Why it Matters) by Martin Gayford
English | November 12, 2024 | ISBN: 0500027420 | True EPUB | 384 pages | 216 MB
Drawing on decades of conversations with practicing artists, Martin Gayford offers intimate insight into the practice, meaning, and potential of painting.
Painting is an almost inconceivably ancient activity that remains vigorously alive in the twenty-first century. Every successful painting creates a new world, which we inhabit for as long as we care to look at it. Paintings can incorporate profound ideas and paradoxes that can be grasped without words. For those who dedicate themselves to it, the art of painting can become an all-consuming, lifelong obsession. It is a subject on which painters themselves are often the most incisive commentators.
Martin Gayford's riveting and richly illustrated book deftly brings together numerous artists' voices, past and present. It draws on a trove of conversations conducted over more than three decades with artists including Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Frank Bowling, Cecily Brown, Peter Doig, Lucian Freud, Katharina Fritsch, David Hockney, Claudette Johnson, R. B. Kitaj, Lee Ufan, Paula Rego, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Jenny Saville, Frank Stella, Luc Tuymans, Zeng Fanzhi, and many more. Here too is Vincent van Gogh on Rembrandt, John Constable on Titian, Francis Bacon on Velázquez, Lee Krasner on Pollock, and Jean-Michel Basquiat on Picasso.
We hear the personal reflections of these artists on their chosen medium; how and why they paint; how they came to the practice; the influence of fellow painters; and how they find creative sustenance and inspiration in their art.
How Painting Happens crosses the centuries to give us a wealth of insights into the endlessly compelling phenomenon of painters and painting.

How the World Eats A Global Food Philosophy
How the World Eats: A Global Food Philosophy by Julian Baggini
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 1639368191 | True EPUB | 464 pages | 3.8 MB
From the bestselling author of How the World Thinks, an exploration of how we grow, make, buy and eat our food around the world-and a proposal for a global philosophy of food.
How we live is shaped by how we eat. You can see this in the vastly different approaches to growing, preparing and eating food around the world, such as the hunter-gatherer Hadza in Tanzania whose sustainable lifestyle is under threat in a crowded planet, or Western societies whose food is farmed or bred in vast intensive enterprises. And most of us now rely on a complex global food web of production, distribution, consumption and disposal, which is now contending with unprecedented challenges.
The need for a better understanding of how we feed ourselves has never been more urgent. In this wide-ranging and definitive book, philosopher Julian Baggini expertly delves into the best and worst food practises in a huge array of different societies, past and present. His exploration takes him from cutting-edge technologies, such as new farming methods, cultured meat, GM and astronaut food, to the ethics and health of ultra processed food and aquaculture, as he takes a forensic look at the effectiveness of our food governance, the difficulties of food wastage and the effects of commodification.
Extracting essential principles to guide how we eat in the future, How the World Eats is a thought-provoking and illuminating call for a pluralistic, humane, resourceful and equitable global food philosophy that will guide us towards a food system fit for the twenty-first century and beyond.
