Decolonizing Trauma Healing Toward a Humble, Culturally Responsive Practice
Decolonizing Trauma Healing: Toward a Humble, Culturally Responsive Practice
by Laura S. Brown
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1433840634 | 401 Pages | True PDF | 3.5 MB
This book offers a critical examination of the field of trauma work using a decolonial lens, recentering narratives and approaches to healing in a more inclusive, culturally responsive way than that offered by dominant Eurocentric approaches.
As trauma is a universal experience, a colonized paradigm for responding to trauma re-introduces problematic dynamics of domination and subjugation that are inimical to healing. Decolonizing Trauma Healing offers a new paradigm for how psychologists and other mental health providers can learn to properly understand and work with people whose lives, psyches, and souls have been damaged by exposure to trauma.
Dr. Laura S. Brown introduces her decolonial, humble, culturally responsive (DHCR) model of trauma healing practice. It urges readers to abandon the concept of cultural competence and other approaches that maintain a Eurocentric perspective, in favor of a decolonial method that re-centers the sufferer's lived experience, with an understanding of the subtle ways in which the colonial mindset underlies the causes of trauma as well as our traditional conception of trauma healing. As a member of a colonized and marginalized culture, as well as in her work as a trauma healer, Dr. Brown serves as an inspiration for readers who want to understand why the traditional approach to trauma care has been insufficient, and all those who are ready to do the work needed to bring the field to a new level of clarity and rigor.

Defense Energy Management
Edward R. Myers, "Defense Energy Management"
English | ISBN: 1606925741 | 2009 | 164 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The Department of Defense (DoD) continues to make significant progress toward achieving the goals of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) and Executive Order (EO) 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management. The DOD Energy Program initiatives include energy awareness efforts, energy manager training, audit programs, procurement of energy efficient products, and the use of sustainable design in new construction and major renovation. Other contributing factors include integrated energy planning, enhanced use of renewable energy, demonstration of innovative technologies, and the use of Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPC) and Utility Energy Service Contracts (UESC). DOD is responding to EPAct 2005 and EO 13423. Combined, these mandates established a new energy baseline (2003), increased the annual reduction requirement to 3 percent per year, increased the percentage of renewable energy required (7.5 percent by 2013), increased energy efficiency of new construction to 30 percent below the current standard, and required metering electricity consumption of all facilities. Through Fiscal Year (FY) 2007, the Department of Defense achieved a 10.1 percent decrease in goal facility energy consumption (as measured on a British Thermal Units (Btu) per gross square foot (GSF) basis tu/GSF) as compared to the revised 2003 baseline. The Department of the Army determined that the square footage was over reported in 2003, compared to data contained in the real property database. Therefore, this book contains a significantly revised baseline, which raises the previously reported Btu/GSF from 113,510 to 116,134. At the end of FY 2007 the Department has 1.95 billion square feet of facilities and spent $3.4 billion on facility energy. DoD spent $9.5 billion on non-fleet vehicles and other equipment - such as auto gasoline, LPG-Propane, Aviation Gasoline, jet fuel and Navy-special fuel. DOD continues to make progress in installing renewable energy technologies and purchasing electricity generated from renewable sources (solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass) when life cycle cost-effective. The National Defence Authorization Act of 2007 codified a 2005 DOD goal to produce or procure renewable energy equivalent to 25 percent of facility electrical consumption. The total renewable energy that the Department produced or procured in FY 2007 amounted to 12,054 trillion Btu and represents 11.9 percent of the facility electrical consumption. For FY 2007, the Department of Energy revised the guidance for compliance with the renewable energy requirements of EPAct 2005 and EO 13423, allowing only renewable electricity. Under this revised guidance, DoD achieved 5.5 percent total and 3.3 percent new renewable energy, well exceeding the goals of 3 percent and 1.5 percent respectively.

Deferring Peace in International Statebuilding Difference, Resilience and Critique
Pol Bargués-Pedreny, "Deferring Peace in International Statebuilding: Difference, Resilience and Critique"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0367666707, 0815386273 | EPUB | pages: 162 | 0.4 mb
This book explores the last 25 years of international peacebuilding and recasts them as a growing crisis of confidence in universal ideas of peacebuilding and self-government.
Since current peacebuilding interventions are abandoning domineering, top-down and linear methodologies, and experimenting with context-sensitive, self-reflexive and locally driven strategies, the book makes two suggestions. The first is that international policymakers are embracing some of the critiques of liberal peace. For more than a decade, scholarly critiques have pointed out the need to focus on everyday dynamics and local initiatives and resistances to liberal peace in order to enable hybrid and long-term practice-based strategies of peacebuilding. Now, the distance between the policy discourse and critical frameworks has narrowed. The second suggestion is that in stepping away from liberal peace, a transvaluation of peacebuilding values is occurring. Critiques are beginning to accept and valorise that international interventions will continuously fail to produce sensitive results. The earlier frustrations with unexpected setbacks, errors or contingencies are ebbing away. Instead, critiques normalise the failure to promote stability and peace.
This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, international intervention, conflict resolution, international organisations and security studies in general.

Deliberate Practice in Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Deliberate Practice in Interpersonal Psychotherapy
by Olga Belik, Jessica M. Schultz
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1433840464 | 251 Pages | True PDF | 4.8 MB
Deliberate practice exercises provide trainees and students an opportunity to build competence in essential interpersonal therapy skills while developing their own personal therapeutic style.
These exercises present role-playing scenarios in which two trainees act as a client and a clinician, switching back and forth under the guidance of a supervisor. The clinician improvises appropriate and authentic responses to client statements organized into three difficulty levels-beginner, intermediate, and advanced-that reflect common client questions and concerns.
Each of the first 10 exercises focuses on a single skill, including developing an interpersonal inventory of patients' relationships, building social skills, and helping patients connect with their own thoughts and emotions and empathize with others. Two comprehensive exercises follow in which trainees integrate these essential skills into a single session.
Step-by-step instructions guide participants through the exercises, identify criteria for mastering each skill, and explain how to monitor and adjust difficulty. Guidelines to help trainers and trainees get the most out of training are also provided.

Deliberative Democracy, Political Legitimacy, and Self-Determination in Multicultu...
Jorge Valadez, "Deliberative Democracy, Political Legitimacy, and Self-Determination in Multicultural Societies"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813391148, 0367098679 | EPUB | pages: 320 | 0.6 mb
Most foundational works in political philosophy have made fundamentally false and far-reaching assumptions concerning the culturally homogeneous character of the polity.Deliberative Democracy, Political Legitimacy, andSelf-Determination in Multicultural Societies provides a much needed corrective to conventional accounts of the normative foundations of the state by reconceptualizing some of the fundamental issues in political theory from a perspective that recognizes the culturally pluralistic character of contemporary democracies. Among the issues considered are democratic deliberation in multicultural societies, the justification and function of political communities, the nature of self-determination, the justification of cultural rights, and the moral rationale for regional self-governance and secession. This work is suitable for graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses in political philosophy and political science, as well as the lay reader interested in understanding the major sources of conflict and instability in democratic societies.

Delivering the People's Message The Changing Politics of the Presidential Mandate
Julia R. Azari, "Delivering the People's Message: The Changing Politics of the Presidential Mandate"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0801452244 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 0.5 mb
Presidents have long invoked electoral mandates to justify the use of executive power. In Delivering the People's Message, Julia R. Azari draws on an original dataset of more than 1,500 presidential communications, as well as primary documents from six presidential libraries, to systematically examine choices made by presidents ranging from Herbert Hoover in 1928 to Barack Obama during his 2008 election. Azari argues that Ronald Reagan's election in 1980 marked a shift from the modern presidency formed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt to what she identifies as a more partisan era for the presidency. This partisan model is a form of governance in which the president appears to require a popular mandate in order to manage unruly and deeply contrary elements within his own party and succeed in the face of staunch resistance from the opposition party.
Azari finds that when the presidency enjoys high public esteem and party polarization is low, mandate rhetoric is less frequent and employs broad themes. By contrast, presidents turn to mandate rhetoric when the office loses legitimacy, as in the wake of Watergate and Vietnam and during periods of intense polarization. In the twenty-first century, these two factors have converged. As a result, presidents rely on mandate rhetoric to defend their choices to supporters and critics alike, simultaneously creating unrealistic expectations about the electoral promises they will be able to fulfill.

Democracy And Human Rights In The Caribbean
Ivelaw L Griffith, "Democracy And Human Rights In The Caribbean"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813321352 | EPUB | pages: 288 | 1.0 mb
The Caribbean, like regions elsewhere, is caught in what has been called democracy's global "Third Wave." In this volume, contributors examine the nature of democratization in the region together with its affiliate, human rights. The aim is to extend the analysis and debates beyond political democracy and civil and political rights to consider also economic democracy and economic and social rights. Early chapters address issues and dilemmas common to the democracy and human rights landscape throughout the region. In particular, economic crisis, drug trafficking, and political instability continue to threaten the region's very healthy democracy human rights profiles. Next, contributors consider how the form of Caribbean democracy and the status of human rights have been influenced by foreign actors and external developments. Particular attention is paid to the role of the Organization of American States, the United Nations, nongovernmental organizations, and international law. Because the democracy and human rights challenges and dynamics vary across countries, the work also offers extensive single-country assessments.

Jon Roper, "Democracy and its Critics: Anglo-American Democratic Thought in the Nineteenth Century"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 0415608872 | EPUB | pages: 244 | 0.6 mb
Originally published in 1989, a guide for students coming for the first time to the study of democracy, who often find it difficult to trace the developement of the idea and to place it in historical context. In this accesible and informative text, Jon Roper introduces the reader to arguments for and against criticisms of the concept of democracy. He does so through examination of the statements and writings of major nineteenth-century politicians and philosophers, in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Democracy Beyond the Nation State Practicing Equality
Joe Parker, "Democracy Beyond the Nation State: Practicing Equality"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367242907 | EPUB | pages: 292 | 0.8 mb
Democracy promises rule by all, not by the few. Yet, electoral democracies limit decision-making to representatives and have always had a weakness for inequality. How might democracy serve all rather than the few?
Democracy Beyond the Nation State: Practicing Equality examines communities that govern their own liveswithout elites or centralized structures through assemblies and consensus. Rather than claiming equality by abstract rights or citizenship, these groups put equality into practice by reducing wealth and health divides, or landlessness or homelessness, and equalizing workloads. These practices are found in rural India and Brazil, in Buenos Aires, London, and New York, and among the Iroquois, the Zapatistas, and the global networks of La Via Campesina farmers and the World Social Forum.
Readable accounts of these horizontal democracies document multiple political frames that prevent democracy from being frozen into entrenched electoral systems producing modern inequalities. Using practice to rewrite political theory, Parker draws on collective politics in Spivak and Derrida and embodied relations from Povinelli and Foucault to show that equal relations are not a utopian dream, not nostalgia, and not impossible.
This book provides many practical solutions to inequality. It will be useful to students and scholars of political theory and social movements and to those who are willing to work together for equality.

Democracy Denied Identity, Civil Society and Illiberal Democracy in Hong Kong
Nicholas Thomas, "Democracy Denied: Identity, Civil Society and Illiberal Democracy in Hong Kong"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1840147601, 113831109X | EPUB | pages: 320 | 0.7 mb
Published in 1999, this book is designed to provide the reader with a detailed understanding of Hong Kong's social and political development. It offers a contemporary, holistic understanding of Hong Kong, which will not only complement existing works but also provide the reader with a solid foundation for understanding future developments in the territory. The book is divided into three sections: Identity, Civil Society and Politics. The first two sections provide a discrete understanding of the issues involved. This analysis is then utilised to explain the particular path of political development Hong Kong experienced in the 1980s and 1990s. Due to the in-depth analysis provided this work will be of use either to academics or to members of the general public seeking to understand the development of Hong Kong.

Democracy in Latin America Between Hope and Despair
Scott Mainwaring, "Democracy in Latin America: Between Hope and Despair"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 026801972X | EPUB | pages: 280 | 0.7 mb
In 2009, Ignacio Walker―scholar, politician, and one of Latin America's leading public intellectuals―published La Democracia en América Latina. Now available in English, with a new prologue, and significantly revised and updated for an English-speaking audience, Democracy in Latin America: Between Hope and Despair contributes to the necessary and urgent task of exploring both the possibilities and difficulties of establishing a stable democracy in Latin America.
Walker argues that, throughout the past century, Latin American history has been marked by the search for responses or alternatives to the crisis of oligarchic rule and the struggle to replace the oligarchic order with a democratic one. After reviewing some of the principal theories of democracy based on an analysis of the interactions of political, economic, and social factors, Walker maintains that it is primarily the actors, institutions, and public policies―not structural determinants―that create progress or regression in Latin American democracy.

Democracy Promotion and the 'Colour Revolutions'
Susan Stewart, "Democracy Promotion and the 'Colour Revolutions'"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 1138110582 | EPUB | pages: 208 | 0.6 mb
This book reviews the interplay between domestic contexts and democracy promotion efforts in selected countries of the former Soviet Union and the Western Balkans. The idea behind the six case studies is twofold. In the three cases where 'colour revolutions' occurred (Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine), the authors explore the extent to which external democracy promoters adapted their strategies to respond to new domestic contexts. In the other three cases (Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia) the authors investigate how the political leadership has reacted to 'colour revolutions' elsewhere and which consequences their reactions have had for democracy promotion. In all cases an assessment of democratization processes in the country is provided as a basis for drawing conclusions about the potential for domestic and foreign actors to promote democratic development. An introduction and conclusion embed the case studies in the existing literature on democracy promotion and generalize the findings across the countries studied.
On the practical level, the volume offers suggestions for improving democracy promotion endeavours, proposing in particular a more balanced approach which goes beyond supporting specific individuals and organizations to include addressing the structural level.
This book was published as a special issue of Democratization.

Democracy, Plan, and Market Yakov Kronrod's Political Economy of Socialism
David Mandel, "Democracy, Plan, and Market: Yakov Kronrod's Political Economy of Socialism"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 3838211081 | EPUB | pages: 140 | 0.2 mb
This is the first book in English to present a succinct overview of the influential work of the Russian economist Yakov Abramovich Kronrod (1912-1984) on the political economy of socialism. Kronrod headed the theoretical section of the Institute of Economics of the Academy of the USSR in the 1970s until the authorities decided that his ideas were dangerous, banning Kronrod's publications until his death in 1984. Kronrod argued that while national ownership and democracy are the dominant relations of socialism, commodity-market relations nevertheless have an important role to play in the planned economy. This revelatory book includes the first translation of one of Kronrod's key essays, "Socio-oligarchism―Pseudo-Socialism of the Twentieth Century," and introduces Kronrod's thought to the English-speaking world for the first time.

Democratizing Deliberation A Political Theory Anthology
Derek W M Barker, David W McIvor, "Democratizing Deliberation: A Political Theory Anthology"
English | 2012 | ISBN: 092399341X | EPUB | pages: 184 | 0.4 mb
Democratizing Deliberation brings together recent and cutting-edge political theory scholarship on deliberative democracy. Edited by Kettering Foundation program officer Derek Barker, Noëlle McAfee, associate professor of philosophy at Emory University and associate editor of the Kettering Review, and Kettering Foundation research associate David McIvor, the collection reframes deliberative democracy to be sensitive to the deep conflicts, multiple forms of communication, and aspirations for civic agency that characterize real public deliberation. In so doing, the book addresses many of the most common challenges to the theory and practice of deliberative democracy. Democratizing Deliberation includes a foreword by David Mathews, president of the Kettering Foundation, and the following essays: "Introduction: Democratizing Deliberation," Derek W.M. Barker, Noëlle McAfee, and David W. McIvor "Three Models of Democratic Deliberation," Noëlle McAfee "Rhetoric and Public Reasoning: An Aristotelian Understanding of Political Deliberation," Bernard Yack "Difference Democracy: The Consciousness-Raising Group Against the Gentlemen's Club," John S. Dryzek "Everyday Talk in the Deliberative System," Jane Mansbridge "De-centering Deliberative Democracy," Iris Marion Young "Sustaining Public Engagement: Embedded Deliberation in Local Communities," Elena Fagotto and Archon Fung "Constructive Politics as Public Work: Organizing the Literature," Harry C. Boyte.
About the Kettering Foundation
The Kettering Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit operating foundation rooted in the American tradition of cooperative research. Kettering's primary research question is: What does it take to make democracy work as it should? Kettering's research is distinctive because it is conducted from the perspective of citizens and focuses on what people can do collectively to address problems affecting their lives, their communities, and their nation. For more information about Kettering research and publications, see the Kettering Foundation's website atwww.kettering.org.
