Chapter Four addresses in the synthesis, characterization, and photodynamic activity of a novel hydrophobic photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(benzothiophene) Porphyrin (BTP) and water soluble photosensitizer 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(7- sulfonatobenzothiophene) Porphyrin (SBTP). Chapter Five discusses the "Guidelines for Gastroenterological Endoscopy in Patients on Oral Antithrombotic Treatment" established by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES).These guidelines classify endoscopic interventions according to the risk of hemorrhage and specify the management of various antithrombotic drugs. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) are classified as high-risk procedures for hemorrhage, but PDT is not included in the guidelines. Because PDT causes ischemic necrosis of tumor tissue, the authors say this could possibly be performed safely in patients on oral antithrombotic therapy. The authors of Chapter Six developed a method of the initial concentration of protoporphyrin-IX in the operated removing glioblastoma tissue using the calibration curve of the fluorescent intensity and the known Pp-IX concentration in order to estimate of the more correlated with the cure rate.

It is well known that the biochemical processes of life on Earth are maintained by the external solar radiation and can be reduced to the synthesis and decomposition of organic matter. Man has added the synthesis and decomposition of various in dustrial products to these natural processes. On one hand, biological synthesis may only be conducted within the rather narrow margins of parameters of the environ ment, including temperature, humidity, concentrations of the inorganic substances used by life (such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, etc.) On the other hand, the physical and chemical composition of the environment suffers significant changes during those processes of synthesis and decomposition. The maximum possible rate of such change due to the activity of living beings can exceed the average geophysical rates of change of the environment due to activity ofterrestrial depths and cosmic processes by a factor often thousand. In the absence of a rigid correlation between the biological synthesis and decomposition, the environment would be greatly disturbed within a decade and driven into a state unfit for life. A lifeless Earth, however would suffer similar changes only after about a hundred thousand years. Preservation of the existing state of the environment is only possible with strict equality between the rates of biological synthesis and decomposition, that is, when the biochemical cycles of matter are virtually closed.

When I first proposed this book, one of the hopes was that it would be the stage upon which would be conducted a quiet, well reasoned discussion of the various techniques of stereotactic radio surgery. At the present time, I am happy to report that the field of stereotactic radiosurgery is much less riven by such inappropriate posturing. The field has taken many steps towards maturity, both technically and medically. In the course of this mat uration process, there have been many grandiose plans and speeches made on behalf of stereotactic radiosurgery. Inevitably, the reality will not live up to the hype, but such is the natural course of devel opment in these sorts of matters. However, even though events may not match our hopes, we should keep in mind the words of Herbert Parker. Recognizing that new modalities for the treatment of cancer do not stand much chance of revolutionary success, nevertheless, he quite correctly pointed out that " . . . with any type of radiatiQn, the margin between success and failure is small. If the chance of success is a little greater . . . thi~ might well be classed as a great advance. " Mark H.

HE ninth Scottish Universities' Summer School in Physics, sponsored T jointly by the Scottish Universities and NATO was held at Newbattle Abbey from 28th July to 16th August 1968. Forty-three students were accepted, fourteen of these being resident in the United Kingdom. In addition there were eleven lecturers and seven other participants. The choice of lecturers, particularly in experimental plasma physics, was limited to some extent by the fact that an international conference on con trolled fusion was held at Novosibirsk during the first week in August. Not withstanding this, it was possible to arrange a programme of lectures reasonably well balanced between theoretical and experimental plasma physics. The topics chosen included kinetic theory, waves and oscillations, instabilities, turbulence, collisionless shocks, computational methods, laser scattering and laser generated plasmas, plasma production and containment. Several semi nars on special topics were given by invited speakers and by students.

Impressive progress in nearly all of the fields could be reported during the meeting which is documented by the contributions to this volume. The theoretical understand ing of QED and correlation effects in few-electron heavy ions is rapidly developing.
