I wound up driving 25,000 miles in 35 US states and 2 Canadian provinces and I visited and photographed 31 National Parks, 11 National Monuments, 1 National Seashore, 1 National Grassland, 2 National Memorials, 3 National Historic Sites, 2 National Parkways, 17 State Parks, 1 State Natural Reserve, 1 State Estuary, 1 State Wildlife Management Area, more than 6 National Forests, and 3 Provincial Parks in Canada. I went to at least 5 Indian Reservations, many city and county parks, bird sanctuaries, AND 38 other Cool Places and Activities that were worthy of photo albums but didn't fall into the above categories. This book contains the emails I sent home describing each place and links to the pictures I took everywhere I went. The variety and beauty are stunning.

The Centennial was America's first world's fair, taking place only twenty-five years after the first international exposition in London. The exhibition was a paean to progress by people fascinated by science and technology. The organizers-largely leading Pennsylvania industrialists and merchants-wanted to show the world that the United States was as advanced as any nation in Europe and for the most part their plan succeeded. Everyday Americans attended the fair to be reassured of their nation's economic and technological past, present, and future.
Mystery and Marvel looks at the 1876 Centennial Exposition through the eyes of the ten million visitors to the fair to help us understand the technological enthusiasm of middle-class Victorians. Although this enthusiasm was not unbounded and was occasionally tinged with a combination of nostalgia and uncertainty, overall the women and men of the late nineteenth century were usually happy to be part of a world they thought was as modern and as cutting edge as the one we live in today. In and around the buildings that appeared in the city's Fairmount Park that spring and summer were the physical embodiments of this culture. The sights, the sounds, and even the smells of the exhibition presaged the coming of a modern America. In 1876 Philadelphia was the nation's largest manufacturing city and Pennsylvania one of the most important industrial states. The exposition can serve as a wonderful lens to examine America's shift from the young agricultural republic of 1800 to the industrial empire of 1900.

Despite Russia's legacy of ethno-cultural and linguistic pluralism, the book argues that the Putin leadership's overwhelming statism and promotion of Russian patriotism are inexorably leading to a reduction of Russia's diversity. Using scores of interviews with representatives of national minorities, civil society, public officials and academics, the book highlights the reasons why Russian law and policies, as well as international standards on minority rights, are ill-equipped to withstand the centralising drive toward ever greater uniformity. While minority policies are fragmented and feeble in contemporary Russia, they are also centrally conceived, which is exacerbated by a growing democratic deficit under Putin. Crucially, in today's Russia informal practices and networks are frequently utilised rather than formal channels in the sphere of diversity management. Informal practices, the book argues, can at times favour minorities, yet they more frequently disadvantage them and create the conditions for the co-optation of leaders of minority groups. A dilution of diversity, the book suggests, is not only resulting in the loss of Russia's rich cultural heritage but is also impairing the peaceful coexistence of the individuals and groups that make up Russian society.
