This is the first biography of an intrepid young French woman, Lily Sergueiew, who led an adventurous life and became famous as one of the five D-Day spies. In 1939, her bicycle ride from Paris to Saigon was interrupted by the outbreak of war. Disgusted by the Fall of France in 1940, she took the courageous decision to personally help the Allies drive the Nazis out of France: she would get the Abwehr to train her as a spy and have herself sent to England. Once there, she would betray the Nazis and place herself at the disposal of the Allies. It took three emotionally exhausting years to achieve this. She arrived in England just in time to become TREASURE, one of the five spies who misled the Nazis into believing that the Allies would land in the Pas de Calais. This disinformation operation saved countless lives. But Lily found the English cold and ungenerous towards her. They knew that she had a fatal medical condition. She had also risked her life - and her parents' lives - every day she worked for the Nazis, yet the English would not let her bring the dog who was such a comfort to her. They told her that her work was vital to their cause, but for Lily their behavior meant that it was not worth a dog. So she hid from them that the Nazis had given her a control code to prove that her radio messages were genuine: it gave her a sense of power to know that she could destroy her work - and the whole D-Day deception - with a single keystroke. She did not intend to use it, but once she had revealed it, she was dismissed straight after D-Day. This meant that she could join the Free French Forces and be sent to France to care for Displaced Persons left in the wake of the retreating Nazis. Working with liberated prisoners from Buchenwald, she married the American Major in charge of the region who had fallen in love with her. He took her to America where he hoped that her condition could be cured. It could not, and she died (largely forgotten) with her husband at her side in 1950.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was one of the most iconic naval fighter aircraft of the latter half of the twentieth century. Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 2: Pacific Fleet and Reserve Squadrons is a comprehensive look at the paint schemes and unit markings used by operational F-14 squadrons assigned to the Pacific Fleet from 1972 through 2004.
The book covers the fifteen active Pacific Fleet fighter squadrons and the two Naval Reserve units that flew the Tomcat for over thirty years. Beginning in 1972 when the F-14 entered service with VF-124 "Gunfighters," the Tomcat distinguished itself, first as an outstanding fighter and fleet defense aircraft, and later as a strike aircraft.
This compilation of squadrons includes eleven units that were assigned to the Pacific Fleet for the entire time they flew the F-14. Four of the Pacific Fleet squadrons covered in this book also served with the Atlantic Fleet during part of the time they were operational with Tomcats. The "Red Rippers" of VF-11 and the "Tomcatters" of VF-31 were originally Atlantic Fleet squadrons that were transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1992, at which time they upgraded to the F-14D version of the Tomcat. VF-11 would serve with the Pacific Fleet until 1997, when it was reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet. VF-31 would serve in the Pacific until 2004 before returning to the Atlantic Fleet. The other two squadrons to serve with both fleets while flying Tomcats were the "Fighting Checkmates" of VF-211 and the "Fighting Blacklions" of VF-213. Both of these squadrons spent almost their entire time in Tomcats with the Pacific Fleet, and the colors and markings used on their F-14s during their Pacific Fleet service are included in this publication. VF-211 transferred to the Atlantic Fleet in 2002 and only flew Tomcats two more years before transitioning to the Super Hornet. VF-213 also transferred to the Atlantic Fleet in 2002, and it continued to fly Tomcats until 2006.
Each of the seventeen fighter squadrons are covered by a short history of their years flying the Tomcat, including both operational highlights and a good look at the squadron markings with which each unit adorned their aircraft. How those markings evolved over time as the Navy moved from the Light Gull Gray over Insignia White paint scheme, to the overall Light Gull Gray scheme, and finally to the group of very low visibility exteriors that were classified as tactical schemes is illustrated for each squadron with color photographs and art profiles.
The move from the gray over white scheme, which featured some of the most colorful aircraft markings ever displayed on U. S. Navy aircraft, to the lower visibility schemes led to a much more drab and understated look for the F-14. Yet even throughout the latter stages of its career, special aircraft in each unit, including the X00-coded Tomcat assigned to the Carrier Air Wing Commander (CAG) or the X01-coded aircraft assigned to the squadron commander (CO), allowed the display of colorful squadron markings to continue. Each unit section has a selection of photographs that chronicle the unit marking evolution throughout the years it flew the F-14.

Colors & Markings of The F-14 Tomcat, Part 3: Prototypes, Test, Evaluation, and Adversary Aircraft is a comprehensive look at the paint schemes and unit markings used on the Grumman prototypes and by non-fleet squadrons from initial design through the Tomcat's retirement in 2006. It completes the trilogy following Detail & Scale's publication of Colors & Markings of the F-14 Tomcat, Part 1: Atlantic Fleet and Reserve Squadrons and Colors & Markings of the F-14 Tomcat, Part 2: Pacific Fleet and Reserve Squadrons.
The detailed coverage starts at the beginning of the production line. After approval of the full-scale mockup of the F-14, the first twelve aircraft off the production line were prototype and pre-production aircraft. Some of these aircraft remained at Grumman for a period of time, some went to various Navy facilities and test units, but all of them served to evaluate the Tomcat and prove out the aircraft's systems, modifications, and improvements.
Next is coverage of the units that flew the F-14 in the adversary role. The Tomcat attained a measure of fame in the movie TOPGUN, and for the first almost twenty years of its life it was the primary platform flown by students going through the Naval Fighter Weapons School (NFWS). With the advent of the Gulf War in 1991, and given both the fact that Iran operated the F-14 and the emerging need to simulate the threat of the larger Soviet fighters then operational, TOPGUN acquired several Tomcats. The F-14s remained active in the adversary role for the next decade, even after NFWS moved to Fallon NAS, Nevada, and became a part of the Naval Strike Warfare Center that later became the Naval Strike & Air Warfare Center (NSAWC).
The book then takes a look at the test and evaluation units and facilities that operated the F-14. On the Atlantic coast this included the Naval Air Test Center at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, including the "Salty Dogs" of VX-23, the center's naval strike aircraft test squadron. On the Pacific coast, coverage is provided for the Naval Missile Center, Pacific Missile Test Center, the Naval Air Warfare Center, the Weapons Test Squadron, and the test and evaluation squadrons VX-30, VX-4, and VX-9, with special emphasis on the Vandy 1 all-black aircraft. This is followed by a look at the two F-14s flown by NASA as special test aircraft.
Much of the second half of the book is devoted to two appendices. The first covers the official paint schemes used on the F-14 over its thirty plus years of operations: the Gloss Light Gull Gray over Gloss Insignia White scheme, the overall Light Gull Gray scheme that came into being in 1978, and the various tactical schemes, that were all part of the move to lower visibility requirements. Each section includes paint diagrams and Federal Standard paint information, and each contains not only the details of the scheme, but a gallery of photographs that illustrate the various schemes as used by fighter squadrons assigned to both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
The second appendix covers Tomcat stencils and standard markings. Here, a series of photographs details what standard safety and informational markings were applied to the F-14 and how they varied over time as the paint schemes changed to reflect the overall move to lower visual signatures. Finally, in-depth coverage is given to the stencil markings used extensively on the initial production aircraft as provided by the governing manual NAVAIR 01-F14AAA-3-2.
