F-105 Thunderchief in Detail & Scale

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is one of the most recognizable combat aircraft of the 20th century. Designed as a supersonic fighter-bomber with the ability to deliver both nuclear and conventional weapons, its lasting legacy was that of a conventional fighter-bomber with a significant combat history in Southeast Asia and in the early years of the Wild Weasel suppression of enemy air defenses mission.
In 1982, Detail & Scale published its first book on the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. This new publication on the Thunderchief is not simply an expanded version of the original book with more color. The text and captions have been completely rewritten. All photographs that were originally taken in color are reproduced in color in this new book. The coverage in the form of text, photographs, and illustrations has been significantly expanded.
Following the Introduction, a Thunderchief History chapter briefly summarizes the development and service of the F-105, including its use in the war in Southeast Asia where it played a major role as a fighter-bomber while also performing specialized missions. The next chapter takes a closer look at each variant of the Thunderchief, starting with the very first YF-105As and concluding with the specialized F-105F and F-105G Wild Weasels.
The next chapter is called Arming the Thunderchief. The most common internal and external stores employed by the F-105 are covered in this chapter with no less than forty photographs and illustrations. From the two different Vulcan cannon arrangements to tactical nuclear weapons, from conventional bombs to napalm and CBUs, and from rockets to guided missiles, these weapons are covered in photographs and detailed illustrations.
The major focus of each title in the Detail & Scale Series is devoted to covering the physical details of the aircraft. The Thunderchief Details chapter includes nine different sections that provide an in-depth look at the F-105 with scores of detailed photographs and illustrations covering the cockpit, canopy and windscreen, fuselage, internal bomb bay, wings, pylons, fuel tanks, ECM pods, landing gear, tail, and engine details. What makes this chapter even more valuable is that more than ninety percent of the photographs were taken of Thunderchiefs while they were still in operational service. Additionally, more than ninety percent are in color.
As always, the final chapter in a Detail & Scale Series book is the Modelers Section. Several new scale model kits have been released in the forty-one years since Detail & Scale published its first book on the Thunderchief, and all of these, along with the older ones, are covered. As explained in the reviews, some of the older kits are better than the more recent ones when it comes to accuracy.
The Kobo version of F-105 Thunderchief in Detail & Scale is 193 pages and has 260 photographs, 230 in color, plus color artwork. The Thunderchief Details chapter alone has 149 photographs and illustrations.

Jack Swaab joined the veteran 51st (Highland) Infantry Division on 3 January 1943. He kept a series of diaries over the following two and a half years, recording the combination of boredom and fear that characterises active service. In mid-March 1943 he saw battle for the first time as Montgomery attacked the Mareth Line. In July that year Swaab took part in the Allied landings on Sicily, writing of the scorching humidity of the Sicilian summer. In May 1944 he records the restless time as his regiment prepared for the invasion of Normandy. In September 1944 Swaab's role changed dramatically, as he moved from commanding a troop to being a forward observation officer. His new position meant that he was working closely with the infantry in the front line. Swaab's first five months as a forward observation officer came to an abrupt end on 13 February, when he was wounded in the leg by shellfire. He was again selected for Foo duty during Operation 'Varsity', the Rhine crossing, in March 1945, and received the Military Cross.

Captain Vincent Bertrand was a French light infantry soldier who survived the key campaigns of Napoleon. Called to arms through conscription, he was directed from his hometown of Nîmes to the depot of the 7ème Régiment Léger (7th Light Infantry Regiment), in Huningue, where he arrived on 16th November, 1805. He did not leave this regiment composed almost exclusively of sons of the department of Gard, until 1815.
His recollections focus on his loves, adventures and mishaps, as well as the pride of being part of an elite unit. It was this pride that kept him with his regiment and his musket operational during the retreat from Moscow in 1812, unlike his fellow soldiers. He tells of the discipline and organization of the few soldiers still able to pull their triggers and thrust their bayonets, amidst the frostbite and chaos of those who had become stragglers or marauders. Bertrand's unfailing bravery and composure are evident throughout his memoirs, demonstrating character, discipline and patience, as well as dedication to his regiment and its values and standards. The non-combatants he saved, the esteem he earned from his comrades in battle, and the comfort he gave to a fellow convalescent on the brink of death, would all indicate he was a hero to some, and an admirable soldier to all. Bertrand gives sincere accounts of his time on the battlefields, in the cantonments in Austria, in Germany, in Poland, and finally of the painful stages of his captivity as an Austrian prisoner of war. His writing is entertaining and fast paced, but with plenty of unique detail.
First published in 1909 by Bertrand's grandson, this is the first translation from French into English.

Remediation of contaminated soils is one of the most important environmental issues. Chemical soil degradation affects 12 per cent of all degraded soils in the world, totalling 2 billions hectares. Soil contamination is not only a social and sanitary issue, but has also an economic concern, since it implies major costs related to decreasing productivity and monetary evaluation of the contaminated sites. Costs related to remediation of contaminated soils (particularly with heavy metals) are very high. Many of the organic substances contribute to contaminate ecosystems and are very poisonous to living organisms and to human health. Correspondingly, many metals, when present at high concentration in the environment, are critical or toxic to plants and animals, and may enter the food chain and therefore affect humans. In recent years, the interest of both public authorities and private companies towards innovative methodologies for decontamination and restoration of contaminated sites has been increasing. Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that holds great potential in cleaning up contaminants that: are near the surface, are relatively non-leachable, pose little imminent risk to human health or the environment, and cover large surface areas. Moreover, it is cost-effective in comparison to current technologies, and environmental friendly. Most of the available data, until now, has come from microcosm experiments; full scale experiments could help in assessing the feasibility of phytoremediation, and its effective contribution to clean-up contaminated soils. However, phytoremediation is not yet ready for full scale application, despite favourable initial cost projections, which indicate expansion of clean-up market to be likely within the next few years. Future research should address new highly efficient accumulator plants, and related cultivation technologies, and this research must account for the spatial and temporal variability of complex systems that include mixtures of contaminants and organisms.

This book started its life as a series of lectures given by the second author from the 1970's onwards to students in their third and fourth years in the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics at Rostov State University. About 1990 the first author prepared an English version and submitted it to Kluwer Academic ✅Publishers for inclusion in the series Solid Mechanics and its Applications. At that state the notes were divided into three long chapters covering linear and nonlinear analysis. As Series Editor, the third author started to edit them. The requirements of lecture notes and books are vastly different. A book has to be complete (in some sense), self contained, and able to be read without the help of an instructor.
