Each book has 100 puzzles and each puzzle covers some 30 word pairs (equaling 3000 challenges!). These are truly pleasant, if not addictive, crossword puzzles for language learning. Learning a language is always difficult. To ease the pain, hints are provided in small script at the bottom of each page, though these are selected to prevent an engineered solution to the puzzle. Full solutions are provided in the back of the book. These two features (hints and verifiable solutions), force the reader to decipher a word's meaning and serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. One recent reviewer of this series noted "As a Peace Corps Volunteer ... this is definitely a fun way to keep up the language skills ... The series has a whole bunch of "rarely spoken" languages, widely unknown to us in the Western world." Another reviewer notes: "Good teacher as it has words listed below that are in puzzle so the clues are there if you need them." Public domain translations for Spanish contributed to Webster's Online Dictionary used in these puzzles may have originated from uncited volunteers, native speakers, professional translators, field linguists and academics (not by the editor of the puzzles). In 1794 and 1799 Superintendent of Convicts Nicholas Devine was granted 210 acres on the edge of the current CBD of Sydney. After the demise of Governor Bligh (to whom he was closely allied) Devine reluctantly retired to his estate where, as an old man living alone, he was constantly beaten and robbed. An Irish convict named Bernard Rochford befriended the old man in 1825 and upon his death in 1830 forged a Will and seized control of the estate and proceeded to subdivide it and sell it off. Many of the purchasers (and others, including the Governor) knew Rochford was in no position to sell the land as even if the will he had was authentic, he was a nonetheless a convict and therefore was prohibited from holding property, let alone profit from its sale. Rochford sold much of the land in exchange for grog and was continually in court over a variety of issues. As devious as Rochford was, he proved no match for his wife whose deceit landed him in jail where he died in 1839. The 30 new landowners included judges, mayors, magistrates, aldermen, newspaper editors, solicitors and other Sydney luminaries. They believed that with Rochford s death all suspicions regarding their ownership of the land would also die but that was not to be. In 1848 Nicholas Devine s heir John Devine arrived to lay claim to the entire estate.

The suppression of southern European revolutions in the 1820s, Belgian independence, Cuban struggles against Spanish rule, and the wars of new imperialism ranging from Aceh to Annual, all shaped the strategic and domestic environment in which the Great War happened, and they reverberated on the post-1918 growth of totalitarianism. Equally the post-1945 wars of decolonization militarized the culture and politics in the democratic and authoritarian states of the old continent, in ways which belied the macro-political identities of the Cold War.
