Rhythmic Robot Audio Music Box KONTAKT | 90 Mb

Long before the Rhodes piano made tines rock'n'roll, little resonating metal bars were called lamellae and were to be found lurking below the ornately-carved exteriors of Victorian musical boxes. Some of these clockwork devices were extraordinarily intricate, involving moving figures that twirled, danced, made gestures or appeared to speak before retiring into concealment. Larger mechanisms might have removable and replaceable drums, allowing you to play different tunes (possibly the earliest example of the hot-swappable storage drive?!). All of them were more or less crude attempts to bring the music of the symphony or chamber orchestra home to the individual consumer, to be set going whenever you might wish (so, possibly the precursor of the iPod, too...)

Music Box celebrates this decidedly clockwork heritage but - of course - welds in some more contemporary strangeness along the way. At its core, Music Box is sampled from a 3-octave professional musical mechanism which runs its tunes from punched paper rolls, like a player piano, instead of a drum. This lets the user create whatever tune they wish, with a little paper punch. (We opted for a 3-octave scale - not very exciting, but good for sampling!) To record this, we clamped it to the soundboard of our Takamine acoustic guitar, tuned the open strings in unison, and put a capo on the neck in tune with whichever note we were sampling - so the guitar body adds a hefty dose of musically-relevant resonance to the initial pluck of the lamellae.

These core notes are accompanied in the interface by several further soundsets: a set of release samples which add little clicks, whirrs and chirrups on note-off (great for introducing an authentically Victorian vibe); a looped mechanism sound, bringing you a clockwork crank sound for those moments when you want to emulate a proper musical box tone; and four synthesised tones which extend the sound palette considerably. One of these is a simple sub-oscillator to beef things up, and the next three are progressively more harmonically-rich FM tones generated by our lovely Yamaha DX5. These allow you to push the basic Music Box sound into far more creative territories, and come with their own ADSR envelope.

Rhythmic Robot Audio PatchVault 770 KONTAKT | 808 Mb

The Korg 770 may be small, but it's mighty - not in a MiniMoog way, more in a BBC Radiophonics Workshop synth-puppy way. From a handful of wires and diodes comes all manner of frankly amazing and wonderful sounds, thanks to some pretty barmy topology and a whole load of unusual surprises: the Chorus wave on Oscillator 1, or the two forms of ring modulation built right in, or the musically brilliant Scale Noise which we're now nicking and building into all our new synths.

So any chance to fiddle with the 770 is a chance we happily take, and when we finally got our hands on a copy of Korg's original manual for the machine, we were instantly grabbed by the fact that it had presets. Yes indeedy, at the back of the manual are patchsheets for 24 factory sounds - or, as Korg called them back in the day, InstaSets. (They turn out to be not all that Insta, cos you have to dial them in yourself; but who's complaining when you get sounds like Funky Cat and Banjo as a result?!) And thus a PatchVault was born.

Well, almost - because, let's be honest, synth tastes have changed a bit since Korg's programming engineers came up with the wonders of Funky Cat and Banjo. As we programmed them in and played them, we couldn't help feeling that a few of the factory InstaSets were rather at the niche end of the spectrum (Foghorn and Wave, for example, is really only useful if you, erm, want the sound of a Foghorn and Wave). With that in mind we decided to go a little further - so as well as the more musically-useful InstaSets (Violin, Electric Bass, Tuba, the really brilliant Gambang, and others) we also decided to let Mongo loose on the 770 and let him hammer some patches out of it. This PatchVault, then, is in two parts: the original Factory sounds and a batch of Mongo Specials. It's really pretty easy to tell them apart, since one lot sound like they were programmed by a bespectacled Japanese engineer in the mid 1970s, while the others sound like the 770 is being tortured but somehow enjoying it. It's an odd (but we feel oddly compelling) contrast.

We can't leave our Sinclair ZX Spectrum alone. Not only can it do awesome drums (see SpecDrum 2000) and print rude messages about your mates on shiny thermal paper, it can also do RO-BOT VOI-CES!

That's right, we got ourselves a Currah MicroSpeech attachment for the Speccie. This little black plastic box of tricks did for voice synthesis what the SpecDrum did for drum sampling: that is, slotted it right into the back of your home computer. Once the MicroSpeech was installed, every key press you made on the Spectrum's boingy rubber keys was announced through your TV speaker in glorious, robotic monotone. RUN. EN-TER. SPACE. BREAK. B-B-B-B-BREAK. Being in charge of a talking Spectrum is the next best thing to piloting the Starship Enterprise. Probably.

SpecTalk gives you weird glitchy sounds, st-st-st-stuttering v-v-vocals, 8-bit nastiness and - most importantly of all - the ability to roll your own vocal phrases using its library of phonetic components. These are mapped out over the lower spread of the keyboard: there's a handy chart of what note corresponds to what sound on the second pane of the SpecTalk. To make your very own talking computer, circa 1985, just slot these bits of sound together in your DAW's pattern editor, nudging them up close to each other so that they form complete words. There you go - an endless selection of personalised ad-libs, shout-outs, vocal riffs and doom-laden robotic warnings of impending core breach, right at your fingertips, and all in the utterly unique 1980s tone of the Currah. As we say in SpecTalk world, "its (ee)z(ee) wuns y(ou) ge(tt) (dth)u ha(ng) ov it". There are two velocity layers for the phonemes, so you can program unstressed sounds or stressed sounds (which are slightly higher in pitch). Combining the two will make your phrases a little less robotic. (But not much. Otherwise what would be the point?!)
